I'm researching the return information on where I ordered my iPhone 4S.  I want my money back! What a waste of time!

I was able to get an appointment at the Apple store...some showed up that weren't there last night.  After much discussion and multiple attempts they figured out to get my phone activated.  Hooray...finally have a working phone!  They also mentioned that there have been a lot of issues with the syncing between apple and at&t servers.

The story so far is that you must activate the phone first and then deal with any account and phone number changes with AT&T. iPhone 4Ss come tied to a phone number and SIM and must be activated as it comes out of the box. After activation then deal with any account changes.

Problem solved for me.  Went to AT&T store, the rep hoped on their wifi and in less than 1 minute (I didn't even get to sit down) my phone magically activated.  I tried on wifi at home many times and this did not work.  I am not entirely sure but I believe their internet connection at the stores must tunnel directly into activation servers.

I am very happy I didn't have to go to the apple store and wait in line.  Give it a try and good luck

I got a text about an hour ago letting me know AT&T had the problem I had called in and reported had been resolved.  Just like you, I walked in and out in a flash! Happy!!!

Okay, I think I've figured this out. It's not really an Apple issue, and it's not really an AT&T issue. To anyone who has just gotten an iPhone 4S: ACTIVATE the PHONE YOURSELF FIRST. Apple only lets you use the sim card in the phone with the particular phone you have. This activation step is not an AT&T activation step--it is an iPhone activation step. If you let AT&T try and activate it first, this is how the problem starts.

If you get the "Could not activate iPhone / The sim card in your iphone does not match the sim card associated with your account" error message, try this:

Go through the iPhone activation steps, and DO NOT connect to a wireless network. Select Use Cellular Data Connection, and now go to the deepest basement or signal blocking place you can find. The idea is that you want the iPhone to think that there's no way to connect to the internet.

You should get a message that says "Activation pending" and tell you that you'll get an activation email once it resolves. The plus side is that you will now be able to access the rest of the iPhone. If you were trying to activate your phone, you should now be able to use it--if you can't AT&T should be able to help you now with your AT&T activation that the iPhone activation is passed.

    Hope this helps!

Can you please help me- I have bought new sim card and it shows SIM FAILURE for past 12 days.

Have you tried a different SIM card. You can get them free online these days from most providers.

Just to mention - if you plan on trying a different SIM and if you are based in the UK you can get a new free SIM from Comparisim to try out.
