How do I turn off 3G on the iPhone 4S?

I'm in an area with somewhat spotty 3G coverage. I used to leave my old iPhone on 2G/Edge most of the time, and when I needed data would turn on 3G. This saved my battery life quite a bit. However with the 4S (AT&T) I can't seem to find any sort of option to turn off 3G. Does anyone know if its somewhere else in the settings or if its been disabled?

Thanks!

Snapped from the my iPhone 4s at 11:38pm tonight Anyone who says the switch can NOT be restored: Apple, people on the forums, etc, are DEAD WRONG.

User uploaded file

I have the full , hi res file for any one who wants to see it along with all the proper info in the pic file (time, location, device it was taken on, etc etc)

So... Apple... do I need to get my OTHER iphone 4S and Youtube a video of my flipping that switch and watch the phone go between 3G and EDGE and humilate you guys?... or are you guys going to tell people the real reason you hid that switch?

No sigh!

When turn off "Disable Cellular Data" iphone close communication with "apn" but continue use 3g... is not good 😟

There is no logical expectation the "Disable Cellular Data" will force the iPhone to revert to EDGE.

All "Disable Cellular Data" does is disable cellular data. Cellular data can be accessed via GPRS, EDGE, and 3G which are all flavors of GSM. The only way to disable 3G would be an On/Off switch for 3G.

Why Apple chose to leave that setting out of the 4S no one here knows... maybe Apple will see fit to put it in with a future software update, but not unless enough people complain about it. Complaining here will not have any affect though... leave feedback for Apple here.

Apple stated that the option to turn off is removed from iPhone 4S.

This is not a software or hardware issue. Rather it is a configuration due to the model of phone we are using.

I still have my 3GS which is on iOS5 and the option to turn off is still there.

I agree we need the option back. While it is less of poor 3G coverage here but heavy 3G data congestion.

It can be so bad that I can't even send a msn msg over 3G while it works fine on 2G even though the 3G signal can be 3-5 bars.

The other point is always abour the batt. On my 3GS running on 3G the whole quarter day.... yeah.. I ever used my 3GS from 100% batt to 20% batt in 3-4 hours.. while the 2G will last me 6-8hours.. I have to charge 2 - 3 times a day which is frankly ridiculous.

You should read the terms of service for this user support forum regarding "Speculations or rumors about unannounced products and discussions of Apple policies or procedures or speculation on Apple decisions."

As far as a 3G/2G toggle on a cell phone, that would only apply to deactivating a UMTS/HSPA radio to force a cell phone to EDGE/GPRS and that only applies to GSM technologies cellphones. This is not a feature for CDMA 2000 technology phones as there is only one radio to handle all cell phone duties and deactivating 3G would deactivate the entire radio, so such a toggle doesn't work. Not all GSM 3G networks have a 2G network to fall back on. The iPhone 4S is a hybrid cellphone.

Understanding the technology involved is important here. The toggle doesn't exist on the iPhone 4S. This is a user to user forum. Apple has a feedback form for product feature suggestions:

I used my previous I phone 3 Gs for almost two years, amazingly sometimes I charge the phone once every 7-8 days (Max), but not less than once every 4 days (as an average).

This how I do it:

  1. Switch off 3G, never used it and will not need it ever.
  2. Switch off Bluetooth, never used it.
  3. Turn WiFi on only before connecting to Wi-Fi.
  4. Turn off notifications you do not need.
  5. Finally turn Airplane mode on when going to sleep, I do not switch off because it is much faster to just turn Airplane mode off again.

I was satisfied (most of the time ) with battery performance, but when I Bought the new 4s, it has a terrible battery performance compared to 3Gs while it is drained to 50% in one day. I thought it will be better due to bigger battery.

No I cannot even turn 3G off which I think it is the biggest battery consumer. Apple please help.

Why bother having a fully capable smart phone if you simply turn off all the functionality? Seems like the original iPhone with EDGE only capabilities or a dumb phone would suit your needs better.

To each their own, but I really see no purpose in paying good money (and lots of good money) for a device that you intend to keep crippled 90% of the time.

What's the big deal with plugging the device in once a day to charge anyways? The device only syncs when plugged into a sync cable or plugged into external power (wireless syncing). So by your own statement, you only potentially sync the device every 7-8 days... what happens when you lose the device or it's stolen and hasn't been synced in a week?

My opininon, you are crazy for being so narcasistic about disabling all the features just to get a week of battery life out of an iPhone and you are creating a potential issue for yourself if the device is lost, stolen, or simply fails.
