My iPod touch shows that the current software is 4.2.1, and that that is the current one... But it isn't. Because iOS 5 is supposed to be compatible...!?

I'm having the exact same problem with mi iPod Touch 3rd gen and my iPad 1 upgraded just fine. iTunes keeps telling me I have the latest version....but, it doesn't! Ugh!
I have this problem too, really annoying! i updated abosultely everything, and then i try and update the version software to my ipod touch 3 gen, it tells me that 4.2.1 is the current version .... gah
Are you 100% sure it's an iPod 3 and not an iPod 2? The 3rd generation of iPod touches were only made in 32 and 64GB configuations. So if you have an 8GB model, it's an iPod touch 2.
I suspect you really have a 2G iPod and those can only go to 4.2.1. If it is 8 or 16 GB model iit is a 2G. A 32 GB model can be either. To determine try either:

i have an ipod with software 4.3.3 software and everytime i try downloading the new IOS5 it keeps stating that the network timed out or something? i dont understand why it wont let me do it? i swear if i have to use an apple computer to be able to im going to be ******.

What is going on?
Ihave a 3rd generation iPod A1388 and I was able to update iTunes with no problem but when my PC tries to download the iPod software it goes all the way to the end of the download 637.2MB of 637.3MB and then stops times out and tell me that it lost connection with the server. What gives here?
I have tried rebooting my PC, resetting the iPod but nothing works.
Here is the error I get. And my connection is fine as it works for everything else.
Try disabling the computer's security software during the download and update.

That was the problem!!!! I turned off Kaspersky and it downloaded and installed with no problems.
