installed ios5 and lost my contacts - help please!!

I'm that guy. Upgraded my iphone 4 to ios5, and lost all of the contacts that were on my phone, all of my old text messages, and recent pics since last backup. My outlook contacts did sync, although they were not on there previous.

Obviously i did something wrong - any advice on how to recover my contacts??

If you were not syncing them to an address book or cloud service, and they did not restore from the backup made prior to the update, then they are gone. There is no recovering them. That's why Apple strongly recommends you sync them either to an address book on your computer or to a cloud service.
