I have noticed high CPU load when these crashes occur on my iPad 1 64GB. Restarting the iPad solves for a day or so, but problem returns. Since this crops up after periods of non-use, I started looking at things that were running all the time. One such thing is mail and calendar sync. If I turn those off, CPU load drps back down to sub 1.0 and I have no crashes.

Also noticed that battery life is poor and is likely due to high CPU load.

I use an Exchange sync for work email and in-built hotmail sync for personal email--which I believe is also Exchange ActiveSync.

I'm hoping this is fixed in the first. iOS update.

It is happening a lot for me as well on iPhone 3GS and iPad 1, both running 5.0.1. For some apps, removing apps from memory work, and for others, rebooting the devices work. Surely these iDevices have had its share of app crashes but I find them more often in iOS5 than previous major releases (iOS3 / iOS4). What is funny is that my new iPhone 4S (replacing 3GS) has no such problem.. leading me to suspect it may have to do with internal DRAM size.

Turns out that turning off ICloud helped but didn't do it all.If I put the ipad into "Airplane" mode, everything works.......well except for anything having to do with the internet, of course. I turned Icloud back on and because I only have a few apps that crash, I just turn on "airplane" mode, use the app, and when I'm done, turn "airplane" mode off. Sheeez, I guess I'm lucky compared to others, but I sure hope Apple comes up with a fix soon.

I tried a lot of the suggestions with varying degrees of success, only to have the problem resurface hours or days later. What I noticed is that somewhere along the way I ended up with two different iTunes IDs. iTunes on my mac had one ID and the store on the iPhone had another. I noticed when I sync'd is when it would get messed up. Since ensuring the IDs match between the two, I have not had a recurrence over a weeks time. Hope this helps some.

I encountered the same problem.

Most of the 3rd party applications would start crashing one day and would start working after any one application is reinstalled.

It got resolved after i followed the following steps.

It's been a month since the application last crashed.

1. Connect your phone to PC

2. Under iTunes, go to iPhone-> Apps

3. Log in to the iTunes store using the same apple ID which is used on iPhone

4. Go through the list of applications. This list would only contain apps that you have downloaded using the current Apple ID

5. The applications that have started crashing would not be a part of this list as you have proably downloaded them using some other Apple ID

6. Delete all the applications from iPhone which are not part of this list

7. Re download the applications using the current apple ID on PC

8. Complete the Sync ( Do not transfer purchases from iPhone)

9. You would not encounter any issues with the applications after this

Perhaps this is related. My iPad 2 kept crashing whenever I would double click the home button. I even tried resetting the iPad, and that briefly fixed it. Turning off iCloud syncing and iTunes Match did not work. I finally went into Location Services and turned off everything that did not absolutely require access to the GPS service (mine's a 3G obviously). This has fixed the crash problem for me, so if you have a 3G device I would suggest turning off Location Services for non-essential apps first.
