If it's happening on all the apps that you've downloaded from the App Store, but not the Apple built-in ones, then try downloading any free app from the store (as that appears to reset something) and then re-try them - the free app can then be deleted.

Otherwise have you tried closing all apps completely and then seeing if they work when you re-open them ? From the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Thanks, but those suggestions didn't work.

I have the problem you described - after upgrading to iOS 5, third party apps downloaded via iTunes do not start. When tapped, they flicker briefly and then return to the home screen. The built in apps work fine.

I tried your option 1 (download a free app). That app works, but the third party apps downloaded via iTunes do not.

I tried your option 2 (terminate all apps). Third party apps downloaded via iTunes do not work.

I tried your option 3 (reboot). Third party apps downloaded via iTunes do not work.

Again, I appreciate your help - any other ideas?

I'm having a similar problem. Only none of my downloaded apps are running after updating to ios5. If I try to launch an app like twitter, it flashes and then returns me to previous screen with nothing happening. If I double click the home button it looks like twitter is running but you can't access it here either. Safari and mail work fine. Wish I would have waited a couple weeks o upgrade.

I had the same exact issue and a restart did not work for me. However I went into the App Store and updated some outstanding apps, and suddenly they all started to work even the ones that did not get an update. Shot in the dark but I think it has something to do with accepting the new terms and conditions that pop up in the app store. After that all is good again.

Same problem here, After 'upgrading' to IOS5 each and every app, from Mail to Angry Birds to Safari and even Settings goes crash either as its loading, or soon after. Sometimes things go OK, other times everything crashes. I know I'm being ridiculous expecting something to work after nearly 2 years but hey, call me a romantic. But this was what happened to my much loved iPhone 3G after 2 years, everything stopped working, and that was that, no more phone. I'm not sure I agree with the 2 years of use only policy, do you?

Also, what happened to the new gestures? I just got used to using 4 fingers to go to the home screen and show running apps, now it’s a pain to go back to the old way. I searched settings, am I missing it?

Same problem here. Days after upgrading an iPad2 to IOS5 suddenly apple built-in apps like 'contacts' as well as changing mail settings crash upon activating. Initially after the update no problems were found.

The options suggested by PatrickW did not solve the problem.

Checking the diagnostic list, I noticed references to among others

LatestCrash-Contacts~ipad.plist

LatestCrash-imagent.plist

LatestCrash-MobileMail.plist

LatestCrash-Contacts.plist

LatestCrash-Preferences.plist

Each of them containing an entire listing which is automatically reported to Apple
