Unable to get onto Java Chat Room - Can anyone help me figure it out?

So basically I get bored sometimes and like to shoot the breeze on a chat room. I am using a MacBookPro from early 2007, running OSX Tiger 10.4.11. When ever I try to jump onto the chat room, a page with a red 'x' above it are displayed, allowing me to go no further. I assume this is a JAVA issue but I've tried everything. Running Firefox since Safair had a problem and I uninstalled it and can't figure out how to get it back. But if somebody can help me resolve the java issue, I would be extremely grateful. Thanks!

Mac OS X (10.4.11), java, chat rooms

It helps to be specific when posting about an issue, such as:

1) Do you mean this URL? http://www.javachatrooms.net/

2) When I go there with Firefox I do't get a whole page with a red x but I do get a page with a smaller frame with a red x.

I am not good at reading source code but I see that page is loaded with java applets. I'll hazard to guess that it was, 1) written by somebody on a PC who only tested it on a PC; 2) written by somebody with a new computer. One of the things about Tiger OSX is you are not running the newest Java version and never will be with Tiger because Tiger support has been dropped. I haven't encountered a Java version issue myself, but I guess here's an example and they will start popping up more and more.

It may also be something in my security settings is blocking script execution but I do notice a message saying that the Java Applet failed to load.

Find out what Java version you are running now - [http://javatester.org/version.html] 1.5 is the highest you can go.

Here's a guide to files needed to update Java on Tiger 10.4.11 - [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13041410&#13041410] but the easiest way is to just use Software Update.

Java 1.5 support on Tiger - [http://support.apple.com/downloads/Java_2_SE_5_0_Release_1] - "Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 1 provides support for J2SE 5.0 on Mac OS X 10.4."

It is quite possible that the site you describe requires a higher version. Especially with that kind of chat site they are targeting people with PCs and people running the newest software. You may find the only way you can get that site to work is to update your operating system and/pr your whole computer.

Web sites change and something may work one day and not the next. It's part of the spice of using an outdated computer.

I don't know this is definitely a Java issue but something suddenly not working doesn't surprise me at all. If you are so inclined, you could try other browsers such as Camino, Opera, probably others but I don't keep a list.

Can I even update my OS?

Yes, Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

minimum system requirements

* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

* DVD drive for installation

* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

Trouble is findinga Retail cpy of Leo, eBay or such the best bet.

Cheaper still is SL/10.5.6...

Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...

General requirements

* Mac computer with an Intel processor

* 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)

* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

* DVD drive for installation

* Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

* Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It looks like they might still have it...

If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

So we know more about it...

At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

BDAqua has posted upgrade options. Just to be clear, if your computer is just a Core Duo and not Core 2 Duo you can only go as far a Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6).

Another minor clarification. "Leo" in BDAqua's post refers to Leopard (OSX 10.5). Since "Leo" is a commonly referred to sign of the Zodiac which is depicted as a Lion and the newest Mac OSX is 10.7 Lion I didn't want you to be confused into thinking he was referring to you upgrading to Lion.
