In itunes unclick the "sync over wifi" box. Worked for me.

The ipad will sync over wifi while it isn't plugged in, when you plug in the ipad to power it is just like hitting the sync button under "settings/general/itunes wifi sync".

The issue you are having with itunes opening over and over again is the computer looking for the ipad, not the ipad looking for the computer. The only way I have found to stop this is by turning off wifi sync in itunes on the computer.

This ***** because in order to sync I have to use the USB cable, but it is better then having Itunes open all the time.

This is a problem I'm having as well. iOS 5 is only supposed to auto-sync when the iPhone or iPad is attached to a charger, but it launches iTunes pretty much randomly if there's a device on the same WiFi network. This wouldn't be such a problem if iTunes wasn't such a resource-hog. Ideally they'd run something in the background to detect the presence of an iPhone/iPad that wouldn't take so much memory or processor power, and also only ping that from the iphone when it was actually in a charger. I guess I'll just have to live with it for now because wireless syncing is definitely nice, but so far I would call the implementation "inelegant".

I am having this problem too. However, it is not attributable to the synch over wi-fi. I've turned that off. After a lot of troubleshooting, I have determined that the issue is with iCloud. Once I logged out of iCloud and turned off that feature, iTunes stopped launching on its own. I like the features of the iCloud synching process but always ending iTunes by opening Task Manager and 'End Process' is a pain.

Has anyone had this same issue and if so, did you resolve it with a setting change?

[For Windows]

If none of the previous stuff worked do this:

Type 'msconfig' in Start & press Enter

In Services, disable 'iPod Service'

Restart

That's probably it but if you're still having trouble you can also try:

Type 'msconfig' in Start & press Enter

In Startup, disable 'Apple Push'

Open iTunes

Show menu bar (if it's not already showing)

Edit --> Preferences --> Store

Uncheck 'Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases'

Restart

Worked for me.
