Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

Thank you for the insights.

If what you say is true, then I think it would be sensible for Apple to maintain a list of carriers that can support their unlocked phones, or at least put the language that describes the requirments into their sales materials.

I had an unlocked 4s that experienced the "sim failure" problem on t-mobile USA and my only option was to return the phone to Apple for a refund.

Thanks for the insights, what you write makes some sense. As I wrote, I wasn't sure whether it was the new SIM or the tape. However, here's where I'm lost. I cut my wife's SIM down to a uSIM as well, and she's not experienced any problems. So it would seem that it is a combination of SIM and iOS version. I (and more importantly she) don't feel like testing it out by updating her OS to 5.0.1 to see if she starts experiencing the problem.

I'm just thrilled that my phone is working again.

Doing the same right now! 4S 16 gb from Finland!

I live in Russia, St. Petersburg and got this phone as a present. With some troubles...

I can't buy microSim of my operator (Tele 2 Russia) becouse they have only standart Sims, so i cutted it.

On my last iPhone 4 it worked very nicely, but with 4S... iTroublePhone =(

По-русски писать можете? =)

Я ставил 5.1, а UDID еще не активировали мне ( В итоге проишвка встала, а активировать телефон не могу. Даже не знаю что делать, если не получится заставить телефон работать по нормальному, ехать в Финку менять?...

Having issues too with my microSIM(non cutted) with Orange France. Requested new SIM got it yersterday. They don't know if it's a 128k and there is nothing written on it besides MFD 12/2010. The chip on the new sim looks different, the pins/pads are having a more curved shape and it looks like the chip is not touching the sim tray anymore. I'll keep you posted in 24h if the problem is solved (or not).

This is rediclous!!! I bought my phone during my trip and now I can't go back and exchange it... "Sim card failure" message appears almost every day... I even had my simcard replaced hoping it would help... I still have hopes for a new iOS update... if it doesn't fix the problem and there is a flaw in hardware, what's gonna happen?? I don't think Apple will recall those millions of iPhones they sold for the past few months. 😟

I need answers, Apple!!!!!!!!!!

An update:

The TAPE method of covering the conduction points along the SIM edge did not work. The issue recurred later that day. I removed the tape and took the next logical step and called support at Apple and Verizon.

I sat through support via phone with both Apple and Verizon.

I learned from Verizon that the SIM card is required in the phone for the phone to operate, even if you do not use the SIM CARD and are on a CDMA network. It is an apple design "Feature".

In my case, the Apple team claimed to isolated the issue down to the SIM or Carrier. This bumped me to Verizon support.

For Verizon users, Verizon can apparently remotely deactivate the SIM on your phone to prevent it from getting the SIM FAILURE problem, but it disabled the Global capability of the phone. Since I am back in the US and not traveling for another month, I opted for the deactivation and SIM replacement. Since they deactivated my SIM, I have had no issues. Verizon is sending me a new SIM via Fedex with an expected delivery of today.

The Verizon support person indicated this has been a common issue and the problem appears to be from a large batch of faulty cut or faulty manufactured SIM cards provided to APPLE at the manufacturing facilities.

My new SIM will arrives today. Fingers crossed
