Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

Has anyone noticed that this issue seems to have more of an "outside the USA" reach than many other issues discussed in the Apple Support Forum site? Maybe I am just way off base here, but it just seems like many posts are from folks outside the USA. I only mention this b/c I wonder if this sim issue is a result of Apple trying to make the iPhone a more Universal device...and not doing a very good job at it!

I am not saying that no one in the USA has experienced the sim problem. Just saying that despite more iPhones being sold in the USA than anywhere else, a disproportionate number of the sim problems appear to be coming from folks outside the USA.

Totally unrelated...I do understand the frustration of everyone with this problem. I had it myself. But, iOS 3.1 b3 fixed it. To date, I can only remember one poster who said they installed iOS 3.1 b3 and still had the problem. So, I continue to feel fairly confident that when iOS 3.1 comes out (probably in early March if you believe the rumors) we should see the numbers of folks with the sim problem drop significantly.

Yes. for a faulty phone with its "problems" related to simply work as a phone we may wait till early march, we may wait a little longer. It don't matter if this has been going for almost four monts, it's only a phone who cant make calls!. No big deal!. Really it doesn`t matter, we might wait a whole year. Why not? IT'S APPLE!!. Did you noticed that Nokia makes phones for almost all parts of the world and they happen to work at least as phones?

Here's my story, so far, with my new( 2 months old) black 32GB AT&T iPhone 4S....

A couple of weeks ago I started seeing the "No SIM card Detected" warning, followed by an "Authorization Required" message; then the Apple logo would roll onto the screen as if it was rebooting itself. This would occur several times one day, then it'd be 1-2 days error free before it would repeat this behavior. (At no time did I ever lose service or was unable to use the phone in any capacity). A trip to my local Apple store resulted in receiving a brand new iPhone. I went home, restored all my stuff onto the new phone and for two days all was well.

Day 3 with new phone the problem re-occurred, so another trip to the Genius bar was made, resulting in a suggestion to replace the SIM card. Luckily there was an AT&T store just down the mall, so in just a few minutes the SIM was replaced. All was well for about 24 hours....then it happened again. I returned to the Genius Bar last evening, a complete "replacement" of my firmware was executed and I headed home to complete the restore. Last night...all was well...

About an hour ago, as I was unplugging my phone from the charger, I noticed the message again! I just checked my software update and it is the 5.0.1 (9A406) version. Needless to say, my patience is now beginning to run a little thin with three trips to the Genius Bar under my belt in less than 2 weeks. I have an appointment with them again this afternoon and I will report back here with the results.

After reading countless posts on this problem, I am convinced there is something inherently wrong with this phone (the 4S) and with it's firmware. There are just too many people experiencing this problem and from where I sit, there just doesn't seem to be one "simple" fox for this difficulty.

I'll let y'all know what happens at the Genius Bar.

Here's the latest developments with my iPhone 'troubles'. (See pevious post just above this one) I visited my local Apple store this afternoon and luckily got the same genius I had yesterday who helped me do a complete 'reload' of my software, thinking that a corrupted file was giving me the infamous "No SIM card found" and "Registration Required" messages. I had taken a picture of the errors with a digital camera but he wasn't interested in seeing them like before..he told me "Let me go get you a new phone".
He returned two minutes later, popped my sim card into the brand new phone (not a refurb) and the new phone would not recognize my sim card!!! He grabbed a fellow employee who has a new 4S and asked him for his sim card, and the new phone would not recognize his SIM card either! Needless to say, this employee was totally flummoxed... he then took my SIM card and put it into his friends' phone and it was recognized immediately, ruling out that my new sim card was defective. He then went to get another new phone, popped my SIM card into it, the card was recognized immediatlely, so now here I sit, with iPhone number 4 (counting the one that failed), and so far, so good.
A couple of questions for the group here.
1) I have a phone case made by Rok<Form, an extruded aluminum case that weighs less than an ounce but gives a lot of protection to the phone. Could this aluminum case be part of the problem?
2) I use an iHome clock radio that allows me to plug my phone into it and either listen to music or soothing sounds to lull me to sleep each night. Could THIS be a problem?
Other than that, this phone sees maybe 2 calls a day and a handful of texts (3-5). Not heavy use at all.
I just think the odds of getting three phones that have this problem is statistically way out there, so is it something I am doing (aluminum case, iHome clock radio) that could be causing this intermittent problem with the "No SIM card Detected" and "Requires Authorization" error messages?????
I'll let you know soon if iPhone #4 behaves. ;-)

Pat,

Try to get a new SIM card from your carrier. Apparently the current iPhone firmware can not work properly with some SIM cards, or in some conditions can damage the sim card chip.

In my case, I could solve the problem only by replacing the SIM card, although the old sim card worked fine on the old 4.x.x firmwares and for some time it worked on 5.0.1 firmware.

After losing my temper a few times & 2 visits from staff of my telecommunications carrier, they agreed that I require a replacement phone since they had tried everything possible including all software updates. I'm now using my new phoen with 5.0.1(9A405) & have had my phone for 2 whole days now without issues! So there sometimes it is just a bad hardware :)

Feb 11, 2012 8:04 PM in response to sue-may

Istar and sue-may!

Thanks for the replies! Istar, I did get the SIM card replaced once and it worked OK for about three days. IF this new phone acts up again, I will certainly try getting another replacement SIM card at another AT&T store (just to make sure I get one from another "batch" ;-)

And sue-may...yes, sometimes I guess it just is bad hardware.....but having three 'faulty' ones in a row is just unreal to me. Maybe i should have purchased a lotto ticket this weekend too? :-)

Feb 12, 2012 5:46 AM in response to IlyaMos

Восстановил через режим DFU (HOME+POWER) версию 5.0.1, но на ней телефоном вообще невозможно пользоваться, никто дозвониться не может, и мне, каждый раз звонить только через авиарежим...

Feb 12, 2012 6:41 AM in response to IlyaMos

Feb 12, 2012 7:27 AM in response to aaron1266

Hi aaron1266, Please understand I was NOT defending Apple in my post. I find their production of a phone that has this many troubled users UNACCEPTABLE. More unacceptable, perhaps, is this air of denial they have put up with regard to this issue. This results in customers running around like madmen/women trying to find a fix...often from customer service personal who have little to no knowledge of the problem. I have actually been to our local Apple Store and had Genius Bar Geniuses tell me they have never heard of the problem. I have direct them to this almost 70 page discussion (and others about the issue) and that does get their attention.

Like you, I assume, I just don't understand how this approach by Apple serves their mantra of "Great Customer Service is our Number 1 Priority." What I think a lot of folks in this discussion, at a minimum, would appreciate from Apple is recognition that this is an issue for more than a couple people, that that they are working on the problem in a concerted way. I mentioned the iOS 5.1 beta 3 "solution" also not to defend Apple...as if they had made some positive moves to help their customers. It was not information offered as a way to excuse Apple. It was just offered as information for those folks who did not want to wait for the formal release of iOS 5.1 to hopefully restore their iPhone to working order. Many other posters have offered this information about iOS b3, I believe, from the same perspective. Fact is, installing a beta product like this, if you are NOT a developer, is NOT standard operating procedure and although I have installed 5.1 b3 and it has TOTALLY removed the sim problem from my iPhone 4S I am not excited to have had to do this as I am not a developer.

I am sure you are correct that Nokia phones have no problems working in all parts of the world. I brought up this issue with regard to the iPhone b/c being a World Phone has not been a feature set for the iPhone until recently. So, it doesn't surprise me that Apple is having some problems with this. It's not an excuse for Apple. It was just a fact I thought worth stating.

So, I was trying to accomplish three things by my post. 1) Restate the "solution" that seems to have had the highest success rate of the many that have been posted in this discussion forum. 2) Explain why the iPhone may be having problems with sim issues-especially in the non-USA market. 3) Commiserate with all of us who were totally excited to get our iPhone 4S's only to find our excitement dropped from the sky to crash and burn.

Cheers, Mr. Luigi

I mean 5.1 beta 3 did not solve the problem.
