Q: Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages.  The phone now only says No Sim.  I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine.  I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM.  Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already.  Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone

    Hi Pat!

It's the fourth quarter and there is no time left on the clock.  Your team is down by one point and you have been fouled.  It's a one and one.  Do you focus all your personal power, step to the line, and give it a shot....or not?  As has been mentioned before, what have you got to lose?  Hm...the game...if you miss. :-(  But you can't win if you don't shoot the shot.

Go for it.  Do the download.

But first, do a final sync of your iPhone to make sure everything that is saved to your computer and/or the Cloud are all up to date...such as your contacts (Address Book).  Then do a backup of your iPhone.  AND then do a Time Machine backup of your computer (or backup your computer using whatever application you do use).  This way, if something dark and evil does happen to your phone, you have all your important things saved somewhere else.

I am on a backpacking trip and need to watch my battery use.  So I'll sign off now.

Good Luck Old Pal Old Buddy,  Mr. Luigi

i had the same issue of "no service" and "invalid sim" and using iphone 4s as an ipod touch 4s for about a month. today i updated to ios 5.1 and so far more than 3 hours have passed and i have not seen the "searching" and "no service" at the top left of my iphone unlike before where after all the suggested solutions (restart, restore, airplane mode on/off, network reset) it only takes less than two minutes and then i see the "no service" message again. will continue monitoring and hopefully tomorrow morning when i wake up i will not see the "invalid sim" message.

    Wibbly!

Thank you for being my beta tester! :-)

After reading your post again, I figured what DID I have to lose? I downladed the new firmware and so far, after only TWO unpluggings from charging (where 90% of my failures occurred) I am happy to report that I have not seen the SIM failure warning....yet. Give me a few days to test drive this.

No other issues have arisen yet either. Fingers are crossed! But I am still unhappy overall with the Apple company (although the Apple Store I dealt with gets 5 stars from me for their willingness to replace this defective phone five times without complaint-I have NO complaints with them at all). It's the folks in Cupertino, CA that allowed this to drag out so long.

Good luck Wibbly... I hope YOUR problems are fixed, along with mine and everyone else's here on this forum that contributed their thoughts and experiences on this situation.

    Cheers!

    Pat

Mr. Luigi, my old friend! ;-)

Well, I did it at Wibbly's nudging, that was about 12 hours ago, and I have plugged and unpluged it twice so far (I know, NOT a statistical number yet), and so far, so good! But remember that after ALL my replacement iPhones (5), sometimes it would be 2+ days and multiple unpluggings for this problem to rear its ugly head.

I gues you could call me "cautiously optomistic" at this moment in time. I see others reporting no problems so far yet others are seeing some glitches so I'll just wait and see.

The saddest part of this is that after abandoning Microsoft PC's and diving in deep with Apple (3 iPhones between me and my wife), an iMac at home and a MacBook AIr for travel assignments (where I am now, 1100 miles from home for 4 months), I have lost some enthusiasm for the brand.

Did they fix the problem??? All I can say now is maybe.

Did they address this problem in a timely manner? Absolutely not!

Did they offer any explanations to their thousands ofo employees at hundreds of Apple Stores, the 'front line' folks who have to deal with unhappy customers on a daily basis? Not from where I sit.

So I'll continue to monitor this new firmware and hopefully, in a few days to a week I can report back to you and everyone else here that maybe, just maybe, this nagging problem has been fixed.

If we ever get to meet.....drinks are on me, my friend! Thanks for all your input...and thanks go to the many folks here from so many countries that have chimed in and shared their grief/solutions/frustrations with this issue.

Good luck and CHEERS to all here!

    Pat

    Hello 13!

We are cautiously optimistic here that the fix has worked.

You should begin preparations for Splashdown.

    You are GO for reentry.

    This is Houston.

    Out.

5.1 installed. So far, so good. Still hugely unimpressed with it taking months for a fix.

I have exactly opposite problem: until now everything was OK. Once I updated to iOS 5.1 I've got "No SIM installed" message. I restarted iPhone even reloaded SIM and nothing helped so far. I have cut SIM from O2 Czech. Will go to store tomorrow to get new SIM, hope it will help. Or any other ideas ?

    Milan3!

You are the first one I've read about so far that has received the No SIM warning since updating with 5.1

I hope this is a rare incident indeed.

Yes, I think your idea of getting another SIM card is a valid idea but make sure you check the link out that was posted above about 4 posts by gmarinov.

Also scroll back up a few more p[osts to the post by ierror and click on that link. Then clcik on the link from there to "Update Your Carrier Settings". That may help you out without replacing the SIM card.

Good luck and please keep us posted.

    Pat
