Q: Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages.  The phone now only says No Sim.  I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine.  I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM.  Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already.  Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone

Freetobee, glad to hear this worked for you. Your experience lends more credibility that this is an insulation issue. Interesting that dnrayzbe pulled the sim, blew on it, and it worked. This leads me to believe that internal heat is also playing a factor. Just speculation that as things heat up internally, metals either expand or 'warp' causing the sim to short. It would be an interesting experiment  to see what the result would be if affected phones were turned off and put in a cold space(refrigerator) for 15-30 minutes. If the phone works after this, heat being a factor, would be supported.

In the meantime, I have not experienced the 'no sim' issue since I taped the sim. Will report back if it reccurs.

    Hi Dee,

Wife's phone has worked perfectly since swapping for a new one at the Apple store.

If you are going away is there a chance you could visit an Apple store where you are going?

Optus can't swap a phone on the spot because it may cost them. They will basically send it to Apple for you where they will determine its faulty and send a replacement. No point getting angry at Optus as their hands are really tied unfortunately. Best you could try is a SIM replacement at Optus.

So yeah, my advice is to see if you are going to be near an Apple store, call Apple care and book an appointment with a Genius at that store and just take it in. It's actually a fun experience. Apple are only interested in what Apple ID the phone is linked to (i.e what iTunes account it's synced to). They give you a new iPhone then you just update Optus on the new serial number.

    Hope this helps, Jason

Interesting find on Apple support site:

Seems like a strange note if people were not having problems with sim cards

I am hearing that when you go to the Apple Store, they will replace your NEW phone with a REFURB. Is this true? If so, we are getting scammed. I paid good money for a new phone and expect the same as a replacement.

Muhaha I think I cracked the problem... I'm one of those which back in 2010 was introduced for the new MicroSIM in iPhone4 and therefore had to cut my old SIM to peaces in order to fit it in the new tray.

Like you guys my new iPhone4s constantly droped my SIM (no calls possible) and had a look in the new tray of iPhone4s. Slightly new diminsions as well as a new material in the tray holding the micro SIM in place...

    Problem:

If the tray have any contact with your SIM contacts it will shutcircuit!!

    Solution:

A mini slice of tape at the eadges of my old SIM card did the trick

    Same here.

    - iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1 (updated yesterday)

    - no hacking or jailbreaking

    - T-Mobile Netherlands

    - same SIM card works flawlessly in iPhone 4,  and (using adapter) in iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G.

Rebooting, reinstalling SIM, all no success. When removed, the 4S does not even say "NO SIM", it just keeps searching the network or "invalid SIM".

Another reboot (without SIM) then displaye the "no SIM" message. Insert SIM again, network is fine. After about 30 minutes "invalid SIM" or an eternal "searching...." message.

Remove SIM, put same SIM in iPhone 4, boom! immediately finds network and works. Put SIM back in iPhone 4S... "invalid SIM" or eternal "searching..." message.

I've been using the iPhone 4S for 3 weeks flawlessly. And today after I updated to 5.0.1. The No SIM issue came up twice and had to do hard reset to fix it. Apple please fix this.

I had this same issue with my 4s. I ended up just taking the phone to the Apple store where they replaced the phone. The replacement phone was a new one as far as I could tell. I witnessed teh unboxing, removing the plastic, etc. In the end though, the phone could have been a refurb, but I really couldn't tell.

The Apple store genius did tell me to contact Verizon for a new sim card. I have not called Verizon to replace the sim card yet. I have been using the phone without a sim with no apparent issues.

Same issue here in Slovakia EU - TMobile carrier. My new iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0.1 is doing the same. I never had any problem on my older iPhone 4 with the same SIM card. ( The whole issue is here discussions.apple.com/message/16692668 )

hm.. tape on cutted SIM card didn't help.. Ordered a new SIM and now all works flawless!

I believe we can conclude that Apple is not in total control of the older SIM cards requiring differant voltage some how - I'm now a happy camper

Just updated to 5.0.1 with no problems.

Had "sim failure" and "invalid sim" with the original sim that came with phone (October 20). AT&T replaced sim with new micro-sim (not cut-down version) and has been fine since.

IOS 5.0.1 did not do any harm on my phone.

2 week old iPhone 4s Black 32gb, worked flawlessly until this morning.  Evidently self updated OTA to 5.0.1 at some point in the last day (?last night).  Woke up this morning with No SIM  failure.  FWIW, I have the phone set to sync wirelessly and to iCloud backups and was not jostled/dropped.

Tried to reseat the SIM card, no dice.

Tried to clean the SIM card, no dice.

Tried to tape the card in creative locations based on other website info, no dice.

Tried on/off/airplane mode/shaking/tapping, soft reset no change (3-4 iterations)

Tried reset all settings, cleared the phone.  Phone cannot be reactivated without SIM in place, which the phone failed to recognize was present.

Took it to AT&T retail outlet, new SIM card placed and phone booted right up.  Phone working fine now.

Strange timing around the iOS 5.0.1 update, but other than that not sure how related.  Phone currently re-updated to 5.0.1 (since I had to restore) and working fine with the new SIM card.

Just wanted to give this info as I wasted a lot of time thinking this was related to software, shorted SIM card, etc but appears that I just had a bad SIM.  Perhaps the update/reset cycle somehow bricked the SIM, but a SIM changeout was all that was needed.

same here SIM card failure. had the the 4s for 2 weeks, yesteday it showed the network bars fine but i couldnt call or sms, today it died totally, saying no sim card.

apple, and espascially Steve Jobs, where not trying to make good products, no, they are trying to make excellent products. A simple a task to have sim cards working in telephone shouldnt be anything we have to worrie about in the the year 2011. this is not excellent, its below all expectations. like having a mercedes whos stearing wheel is just not working. congratulations to whom it may concern!
