Q: Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages.  The phone now only says No Sim.  I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine.  I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM.  Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already.  Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone

    One of the greatest cellular provider - Megafon - has no 128k SIM-cards at all. How should we solve this reason, Apple? You must to make 5.0.2 asap abd fix thr problem or let to peoples to setup 5.0.0 firmware back.

    ok - my iPhone got returned.

    I did it not because I was unlucky and got a faulty product, but because Apple keeps ignoring all of us. Thousands of users complain and Apple is too cool to talk to the idiots who pay a fortune for a phone with which you cannot make calls.

    I am dissapointed.

    I have the same issue with an iPhone 4S 16GB. Get 'Invalid SIM' or similar message about twice a day. Have to do a full reboot (Home button and On/Off button depressed together) each time and then 50/50 whether the SIM will work again. If not another reboot. When is this going to get sorted?

    I bought the new micro sim today, and for almost 24 hours, my iphone 4S is working perfectly!

    I think this problem occur because the cutted sim has an "almost iqual" contacts, but as they are not the same, it could lead to a shortcircuit and the SIM FAILURE message.

    For me it's solved up to now.

    Got the problem 'invalid sim' when the iphone 4s  is inactive for a while, especially overnight.

    I live in an area with a poor signal, orange ( uk) is the carrier.

    Was ok before 5.0.1 update. My 3GS running 5.0.1 seems ok

    Reminds me of a problem that the Samsung toco that I once had

    To conserve power when the cell / mast was disconnected it eventually

    Stopped trying to connect to the mast, then a phone power off.

    My guess is that with 5.0.1 apple are trying to safe the battery life

    By giving up polling the cell / carrier.

    What do you rink apple ?

    I have the exact same problems as u guys! I bought my Iphone 4s 32 GB white at the online applestore, which was sent to my home in Sweden. When im trying to send a text, the green statusbar onyl comes to like 90% and then it wont send it. I cannot call my number as well as it goes directly to voicemail. Ive changed my phone twice now and changed the sim card 3 times now and i still have the same issue! Which is very frustrating. I called apple store regarding this problem and the told me that the new update should make this problem go away, but they do not know the date yet. (aprox. 50% of the customers have the same issue as me). So if theres any other solutions, let me know!

    @buij77

    Here's a long message I sent to some people yesterday about using an iPhone 4S in Vietnam:

    ""Genuine" Micro-SIMs (ie not cut down from larger ones) are currently ONLY available from Vinaphone.

    Mobifone don't have them (nor do they have any of their 128K SuperSIMs which might also work after cutting). I have tried 4 different Mobifone offices. Over the last week, Mobifone staff have told me lies, ignored me, sent me from office to office, and generally behaved as if customers are not important to their business.

    Viettel don't have Micro-SIMs either (at the moment?). They do sell the iPhone 4, so (according to Apple) they should be issuing genuine Micro-SIMs. I have heard from two people that you can get the phone to work on Viettel if you get the right kind of SIM (128k?) and then cut it down ...

    A new Micro-SIM from Vinaphone (for a pre-paid service) costs only 77,000 VND. I think it is 52,000 VND for the first (normal) SIM which gives you a phone number, and 25,000 VND to replace that SIM with a Micro-SIM (yes, a normal SIM is wasted in this exchange, but Micro-SIMs can only be issued as replacements for normal SIMs).

    You can keep your existing number only if you are with Vinaphone. There is no number porting between carriers in Vietnam. Some carriers have multiple number ranges and they also will not allow porting between those ranges!

    You can use the same Vinaphone Micro-SIM with the iPad 3G model. I am not sure if there are iPad issues with SIMs from other carriers.

    The only Vinaphone shop I am sure will carry the Micro-SIM is the big one on Nguyen Du in Ho Chi Minh City. I did try others, but they didn't know what I was talking about.

    There is an iPhone/iPad specialist in the store (or at least she was there when I went in). She also helped me with a sheet full of details on the various data plans. You should definitely get onto the data plans, because the prices are significantly lower than the standard data rates. And yes, you can use the data plans with a prepaid service.

    I will mention at this stage that Vinaphone is the third largest mobile phone network after Viettel and Mobifone. The word on the street is that Viettel have much better data service ... "

    Sadly for me, I can't change carriers to Mobifone without a lot of grief. I've had the same phone number for 10 years and I'm not able to change it for now ... :-(

    Anyway @buij77, make sure you try the genuine Vinaphone Micro-SIM before you go to the hassle of changing the phone. I think you'll find that the phone is fine on their network if you get the right SIM.

    Apple, we are all getting tired of this nonsense. Fix it!

    @Wibbly

    Thanks for your advice.

    I've heard that Mobifone does have the micro SIM, however it is not publicly issued! You have to know someone working there in order to get one. I don't understand why they have to do that???

    The service in Vietnam is suck which is very normal, unfortunately. However, it is considered better compared to few years back.

    I am using Vinaphone normal sim and working fine on my iPhone 4S ( 32GB black). However, when I insert the SIM to my wife's iphone 4S (16GB white), it has the problem. Same with my wife's SIM card when it's put into my iphone, it worked fine.

    So I'm not sure whether the software or the physical phone itself?

    Viettel certainly has a better data service but with the signal coverage within the city like HCM and HN, Mobifone is still better while Viettel is only good in provinces. And same as you, my wife has been using her number for the past 10 years so can't change to other operators!

    I still haven't figured out how to send the phone back to Australia to get exchanged!

    It's really a pain in the **s! And still no words from Apple! What a simple thing, making a phone which cannot make a call for such a big phone maker like Apple! So dissappointed!

    Hi Everyone,

    I finally solved the problem without replacing my 32GB iPhone 4S. I live in Argentina so there's no way to return the phone here. The solution was to get a bigger SIM and cut it. The bigger SIM looks different from the microsim.

    The symptoms were:

    • Could make calls for a little while (~1 min).
    • After that, couldn't make or receive calls, send or receive texts but I did have 3G.
    • When people tried calling me the got silence instead of directly going to voicemail.
    • When trying to make a call, I got silence and after a while the call failed. After the call failing, the network went into Searching... and then it re-acquired the network.
    • Locking and unlocking the SIM sometimes failed or took 15 seconds.
    • After ~6 hours without use, I would get the Invalid SIM / SIM failure message.

    I tried the following solutions and none worked:

    • 3 different microsims (they all looked the same)
    • isolating different parts with tape
    • resetting network settings
    • restoring the device

    The microsims that didn't work looked like this one.

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zfVZUkfQLqA/TBDBs6yaiJI/AAAAAAAAA8w/IAg86aOkmd4/s1600/Globe+MicroSIM.jpg

    The new SIM looks similar to this one but without the "parenthesis" on the left and right.

    Perhaps we should create a picture database of the microsims or sims that work and the ones that don't to see if there's a pattern.

    Hope this post helps!

    @buij77

    Have you tried a genuine Vinaphone Micro-SIM in the phone? Not a cut-down one ...

    Do you have any leads on getting a Mobifone Micro-SIM? I'm about to get my staff onto this, but my experience with Mobifone over the last two weeks has been horrible!

    @Wibbly,

    As I am using this SIM without any problem so far hence I prefer not to change, just in case!

    I am thinking who I can get in touch at Mobifone to get the Micro SIM for my wife.

    I will let you know as soon as I find out.
