Q: Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages.  The phone now only says No Sim.  I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine.  I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM.  Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already.  Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone

From Mexico: I was unable to use the phone since I get it on December (4 weeks!). Yesterday I went to my provider (Telcel, in Mexico we don´t have all the support of Apple, like Genius line). The changed the phone for a new one, running iOS 5.0. Almost 24 hours without problem! So, I will not update until Apple (came on, you´re already late!) give us some answers! For me, it looks like a software issue... I´m using the same SIM card with no problems.

Regards to all the one, brothers in pain, who posted here... the comments are very useful, as the notion of not be the only one with this problem, as sometimes the technical services make us felt.

I tried everything I could: restore to the newer 5.0.1 build, replace the micro-SIM for a 128KB one, restore the iPhone (as a new iPhone) while in DFU mode... Nothing happened.

My problem is that my iPhone shows full signal strenght, but I cannot make or receive calls. I must turn airplane mode on and off to make it work again.

So, I replaced for another brand new iPhone 4S and... the same problem persists.

I only get this problem when I'm at work. Could it be something wrong with my cell company (Claro - Brazil)?

Now are there 2 different iPhone 4s in addition to 2 different 5.0.1?

I wonder, do the phones have some different part inside, then they should have different model numbers (unless Apple is so dumb to name them equally, like they did with 5.0.1 firmware).

Mine defective one (non-working on 5.0.1) was a black 16Gb with "Model A1387 EMC 2430" sign on a back. OLGUNOZTURK, could you share your color/capacity/model of a phone working under 5.0.1? And which 5.0.1 exactly also, 9A405 or 9A406?

I see, 5.0.1(9A405) is not the freshest 5.0.1. Problem spotted on 9A406, modem 1.0.14. And if you have 5.0.1 already (no matter the numbers in brackets) iTunes will say you have the latest firmware (or maybe they just disabled 9A406 recently). So most likely the problem is in 1.0.14 modem.

    Thanks for info anyway!

    Hi All,

As I'm sure most of you know, iOS 5.1 (the first big update to iOS 5.0) is in beta and I believe being tested by developers.  So, it is not yet a done deal.  I'm sure everyone in this discussion forum hopes that iOS 5.1 will contain a substantive fix for this SIM issue.

Until the actual release of iOS 5.1, I think it is still prudent to keep sending feedback to Apple about the problems you have had with your iPhone.  As I mentioned earlier in this discussion, Apple needs accurate feedback to guide its decisions as to what issues are significant problems needing aggressive attention and which are not.

I am copying part of my old post here as this discussion has become so large it is getting hard to read it all and perhaps many viewers did not read the original post.  Remember, this Forum is for Apple customers to share questions and answers.  It is not a way to let Apple know what functionalities of its products are not performing up to spec.  That's what its Feedback site is for.  Let's help Apple (and US!) out and send them the feedback they need so that hopefully they will decide that this SIM issue is of significant importance.  The more feedback, the better chance iOS 5.1 will offer many of us in this disussion relief from our SIM problems.  Here is the relevant part of my old post...

...If writing your own feedback comment seems like a lot of effort, I offer you these few sentences below that you could just copy and paste into the feedback site.

The link to feedback site is:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Feel free to use copy/amend/whatever the following as you wish:

    Dear Apple,

I wish to register a strong concern about my iPhone's unpredictable inoperability due to failures somehow associated with it's SIM technology.  For me, I do not consider this just a significant lack of convenience, but a significant safety issue.  Should I need my phone in an emergency situation where it is experiencing  a SIM FAILURE, I believe the iPhone will have put me at risk.  I would ask you to please give fixing this problem your greatest priority and effort.

    Sincerely, XXXX

    My phone is  Black 16gb

              Model: MD234LL

              Version:5.0.1 (9A405)

              Firmware:1.0.13

I am having the same issue so I don't think the problem is in 1.0.14 modem.

    Hello everyone,
I purchased an iPhone 4S in version 5 two months ago from Canada and everything worked correctly until I update to version 5.0.1 and since then show up message

    "Sim failure" at random time.
    Device information:

    Type: 4S

    iOS level: 5.0.1 (9A406)

    Model: MD234C

    s/n: C38GL*

    Firmware level: 1.0.14

I tried to do all the suggestions listed in this forum including the new upgrade to 5.0.1.
Eventually I sent the device to Apple Store, and got a new one in version 5.

Since then (4 days) the message does not appear "Sim failure" any more.

The battery holds a lot longer even though the device came on version 5.
    The new device information:
    Type: 4S

    iOS level: 5 (9A334)

    Model: MC922LL

    s/n: C39GK*

    Firmware level: 1.0.11

In my opinion, Apple hides a HW problem on all first models and gives you an expectation (by silence) that the issue will diminish in the next iOS version.
I suggest, go to Apple store and replace the device ..

    Thank you

    I had the same problem.

I bought my 4S in Chicago and when arrived home (Brasil) it started to unrecognize the SiM card.

I just called Apple and they replaced my device, it's really simple!
