The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)

I have Macbook Pro (mid 2010) with OS X lion. Whenever I try to copy any file to my network drive; Western Digital My Book Live, I receive this message

The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)

I searched online and almost tried everything I know but with no success. It was working fine before upgrading to Lion.

I made a factory reset to the network drive and router but still same issue.

I see there is a file size limit with FAT32 formatted disks. Try reformatting to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.

Its a network hard disk. You cannot format a network driv. It has its own format.

Do you have a file of over 4Gb? If you are using SNAPSHOTS or have copied a clone, there may be a large .dmg file around?

No, it happens when I try to copy ANY FILE. even a 1 kb file.

Of course it could be a network problem? I have no experience of such a drive.

Hi there,

Well I have exactly the same problem! Recently I reset my WD My book White light (2 x 1TB RAID disk), due to the fact that the disk ran full because of TimeMachine.

I reset the disk, and now I can only write some files to it, but most give this error code.

I wrote to WD, but they could not give an answer.

Q: did you update the firmware? Maybe that is causing the problem, in that it is maybe not consistant in the filesystem?

Hi to all!

I also have the same problem and same device (WD MBL). copying files and folders from Win PC I have no problem. Is someone able to solve or provide a work around?

The problem persists also upgrading firmware of MBL, restoring to factory sets and changing MBL with a new one.
