Do I have to upgrade to Lion to use iCloud on my OS5 devices?

After upgrading my iPad to OS5 I read the instructions on the Apple website on using iCloud. It said I first had to install OS Lion. Seems there is a free app that can be downloaded and installed on a PC in order to utilize iCloud, but Mac users are forced to upgrade their OS. I'm not ready to migrate to Lion based on some of the reviews, and prefer to wait till the bugs are worked out. Not only that, but I think it's a foul that Mac users are forced to spend money to use iCloud (an Apple utility) when PC users can use it for free! Am I missing something? Is there an iCloud app for Leapord users?

Hello:

I'm not ready to migrate to Lion based on some of the reviews, and prefer to wait till the bugs are worked out.

If you are referring to the problems listed on these forums, you will find that most problems (there are no "bugs," to my knowledge) are user-specific.

iCloud on an iMac requires OS X 10.7.x. The cost is insignificant and it is an incremental step forward. Apple, like most software developers, rarely releases new functionality that is backward compatible.

Incidentally, I am not preaching. I am just trying to address your issue.

To my knowledge, no.

Barry,

Thank you for addressing my questions. I understand the cost to upgrade is minimal, but quite frankly, Snow Leapord is working very well on our 2 MacBooks and iMac! It's more about the principle of the matter and the fact that those of us who are loyal to Apple (we have approximately 10 Apple products in our household) don't immediately have the advantage of this new technology when those less loyal to Apple (PC users) are offered a free app to take advantage of it. I think adding the iCloud Control Center to an update to Snow Leapord, or offering a free app in leiu of forcing a complete upgrade would be an appropriate jesture for those of us who are loyal followers. I'm not preaching either, I'm just not ready to upgrade all our Macs to Lion, so I feel we are missing out, especially when the device OS (OS5) is free. Thank you again for confirming my suspicions of not being able to utilize iCloud on my current OS.

I too was just about to upgrade from my perfectly working Snow Leopard in order to use iCloud to sync calendars between my iMac and mine and my wife iPhones. We are also very avid and loyal Apple fans, but its a shame to have to upgrade a perfectly stable OS, to use the iOS 5 features.

I was about to go ahead (having had a clean out, fresh backups etc), when I checked this website

http://roaringapps.com/apps:table/

I was EXTREMELY glad I checked as many of the major apps that I use regularly simply don't work. A key example is Photoshop CS2.

So I have cancelled my intent to upgrade and will live without iCloud on my iMac.

Also, in my view Lion seems to show Apple losing its way slightly...to messy and my iMac isn't an iPad!

Updating to Lion isn't even an option for me because the computer I have is apparently one version too old! 😟 However, I have the ipad2 and iphone4S both with ios5 installed. Can I migrate my mobileme account to icloud without Lion running on my computer? Basically, I'm trying to figure out if this will even work and what I would be missing on my computer with my computer no longer syncing to my mobile devices.

Thanks!

I've done exactly that in the end.

iMac is staying on Snow Leopard for now.

Have switched on iCloud on both iPhones. For now, I have only switched on Calendar Sync.

What seems to be happening is Calendars syncing between phones (iMac none the wiser), then when phones dock with iMac, it gets iCal updated. 9 times out of 10 we check availabilty on the phones anyway.

I'm having a few issues, I think they are due to the push/fetch setup. Next thing to try will be setting to manual which updates the calendar each time the calendar app is started.

I didn't get on well with the syncing over wifi (whilst connected to mains power) as I found it slow and unreliable, so we will be regularly USB docking the iPhones to the iMac regardless.

Also, I am still backing up both iPhones to the iMac (which is regularly backed up to 2 bootable clones)
