I have the same issue. Seems to be specifically iTunes 10.5. It won't recognize 3 of my devices.
The beta versions of iTunes 10.5 all worked and Xcode sees them all.
Trying to fix now.
Looks like removing iTunes beta and installing the normal downloadable version was the cause. I redownloaded the developer version and it picked up the phone right away.
So if you're a developer -- go back to the dev version. If you're not, I'm not sure what it is yet.
iTunes 9.2.1 (4) on my iMac running on OS10.4.11 doesn't recognize my iphone 4S but iPhoto does recognize it.
I've checked for updates and it says iTunes is updated.
None of the steps on the support page seem to work either:
Update i-Tunes = updated apparently
Restart iphone - done
recharge iphone - done
check USB connections - done (iphoto recognizes the phone is connected)
restart computer - done
resolve software conflicts - done
What else can be done?
Do I have to upgrade my computer to Leopard or Lion so that i can update iTunes to a newer version?Anything less drastic than that? I was not told of any of these issues when I purchased the phone...
@greggst, did you ever fix your problem? I'm having the same issue. help!
I have an iPhone 4S and recently installed 10.6.3., and am running iTunes 10.5.
So far none of the procedures involving iTunes re-installation WITH additional file deletion have made any difference. iTunes is still blind to my iPhone. The only way I can get iTunes to see my iPhone is to trash, then re-install iTunes while the phone is still plugged in - I don't even bother re-starting the computer - doesn't make any difference. Until Apple (or someone else) comes up with a solution, I will need to keep dumping & re-installing iTunes each time I start the computer.
By the way, I didn't have this problem when running Leopard. Lion users may have better luck, but I wasn't planning on [that] upgrade for a bit.
I haven't tried downgrading to an older version of iTunes yet, but that'll probably be next.
Let me know if anyone comes up with a better solution.
Yes I did Dustin - I installed Snow Leopard and updated my iTunes to the most recent version for that OS done automatically when you upgrade. Now iTunes sees my iPhone 4s. Not possible on older versions of Mac OS using iTunes versions incompatible with the iPhone. All my old software still works with Snow Leopard so it was a relatively easy/painless fix.
I'm glad that's working for you greggst. I'm not having the same success however. A shut down or re-start kills my iPhone recognition. Once I re-install iTunes (and leave the computer on) everyting is fine. The two of us are running the same OS and are using the same phone, so there must be something else that's different. I'm wondering how many other people are having this same problem... My online searches show that this is an issue, but so far there doesn't seem to be a fix that works for everyone -
It looks like the problem has been solved by an update. iPhone and iTunes are friends again 😀
So, Gregg - the anwer was that iPhone4S is not compatible with iTunes 9.2 (meaning i would need to upgrade to Snow Leopard on a 5-year old iMac)?
I cannot connect my iPhone to iTunes using Win Vista x64.
I know... Windows 😉
But if you guys have problem with Apple OS, I wonder how I get my problems solved running under Windows
Yes JayD - reading the fine print on the box revealed that we need to use a certain version of iTunes that is only available to you if you upgrade to Snow Leopard. Once you upgrade to the newer OS, you will then be able to upgrade to the newer iTunes version that will be compatible with your iPhone. Good luck.
This did not fix the issue for me.
