iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Same problem here. Using WAY more battery than my 4. Contacted tech support and he suggested that there is probably a corrupt something or other that is running in the background that needs to be fixed. He recommended that I do a restore. He likened the corrupt whatever to being like moving and losing a box. Since i moved all of my data from the 4 to the 4S something got whack. He also said that it is not so uncommon. I'm in the process of doing restore now and I'll tell you what happens.

On another note, I have to say that I have never been disappointed with support. It sounds like they are willing to replace handsets if you insist, but in all reality it is probably not a problem with the device. Hopefully I'll still feel the same tomorrow morning.

Update.

So I did have better battery life after doing what the Apple Support guy told me. But...I also used my phone way less and the settings are not to my personal liking. I was very busy at work today and therefore played way less on my phone. At this time last night I was down in the low 30s high 20s.

Tonight I'm going to run down the battery again and start fresh again tomorrow with MY settings.

I still don't think my phone should have used this much battery when I didn't even "USE" it for more than four hours....

I have the 16GB White iPhone on Verizon. I started it as a fresh phone. Did not use backups, simply synced my contacts, and added my apps thru iTunes. Tomorrow is my day off...I might just run out to the closest Apple store if I have time. I'll keep updating.

the theory on sim cards only really would apply to those who have a carrier that uses them. my wifes iphone 4 does not have a sim card because sprint does not use them. only option we havent tried is a full restore. myy wife would rather wait for a proper update though but right now im not feeling very confidenti bout that even happening as apple has yet to even acknowledge there is an issue.

Actually my sprint 4s has a sim card in it. When I pop it out the phone displays the no sim card message but is still connected to the sprint network. I am assuming they have it there as a placeholder for a real sim card later on.

Also I noticed that in settings>about>Diagnostic and usage I had Automatically send checked. I looked at the diagnostic and usage data tab and there was a ton of files in there and I have only had the phone for 5 days now. Wondering if these files are trying to be sent to apples servers and if they are getting swamped they keep retrying til they get through. I checked don't send and my phone seems to last a little longer now. Just a thought because I don't know when this data is supposed to be sent.

I have some useful data and would like some input. It's on page 17 so who ever wants to comment please do so.

I don't know why I never thought of this but here's one trick Apple knows that may or may not have let us in on. One way to extend your battery is by turning off "Ask to Join Networks." By turning this off your iDevice isn't always looking around trying to establish a connection. Theoretically it makes sense so lets see how it holds up in the real world. However, I'm still expecting Apple to release some sort of update/remark soon. This Battery issue is a bit rediculous.

EDIT: Does anyone know what "Cell Network Search" is under location services/system services? I have it on but is it really neccessary?

Last night I took the drastic step of doing a factory reset to restore as a new phone. I've now added back on all my apps, email, exchange etc. Got all my settings back to how they were before the reset. The battery now seems better, though still not quite what my iphone 4 was pre-ios5. Overnight the went down 9% in 8 hours. Previously I'd have expected about 2-3% - however this is still a big improvement over how it was when I restored from a backup when I was losing 40% a night.

If anyone has bad battery life and restored from a backup - perhaps it would be worth trying restoring as a new phone. If no joy you can always restore again from your backup.

Ok so I left the old SIM in the phone overnight. It burnt through 22% in 6.5 hours! Previously with the new SIM in and the exact same settings, it wasn't even using 1% per hour.

This is defineately a problem that I'm experiencing. That doesn't mean that this is the fix, I still think there is another problem in the software somewhere.

I've just removed the SIM Card, Reset Network Settings, Shut the phone down. Waited 1 Minute. Put the SIM back in, powered the phone back on and re-entered the Wifi information. I'm now monitoring battery usage again.

Keep you posted.

Just to tell you - if you are despairing of your new 4S - that happy endings are possible with this battery saga.

For the first two days with my new phone I could literally watch the percentage fall 1% a minute. Overnight I was losing 60%+ just on standby. I was about to return the phone as faulty.

I tried all the solutions posted on these various threads, including: removing then restoring Exchange mails, resetting network settings, switching icloud off and on, stopping wifi sync, removing unnecessary location things (like Timezone), Bluetooth off, turning restrictions on for Ping, restoring as a new phone rather than from a back-up, running the battery down to zero and then charging etc.

So I don't know which of these made a difference - but something worked. Last night overnight I lost 2% on standby. The phone sings and dances and loses charge at an entirely acceptable rate. It has been on - and happily doing stuff - for more than 24 hours now. Everything that I want is switched "on" again.

So don't give up. It isn't a hardware fault. It somewhere there in those settings and emails. Just ... it would be nice to know where exactly ...

... and why this was not sorted out before release, rather than making so many people tear their hair out and waste hours seeking solutions.
