iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I'm just waiting for Apple to post some videos on their website about how other manufacturers phones get really hot and consume 10%-30% battery per hour just trying to connect to 3G. Oh, but they can't because no-one else's phones do that...

Why don't you just install the update and see how you feel after using it a few days. Or, are you not actually an owner, and merely here to troll?

3g off (will rapidly drain your battery!)

As far as I've found snooping in every menu and sub-menu, and from what many others are saying, you cannot turn 3g off on the 4s. I asume you still can on the 4, even on iOS5.0 but I don't own one so i can't comment.

Are you telling us about a 4 or a 4s? It makes a big difference. If it is a 4s how are you managing this feat?

Please kindly confirm.

Many thanks.

He clearly states that he has a 4S, as well as Siri.

There is a setting to turn off all Cellular Data, which turns off both 3G and Edge. It's in Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data. This would make sense to me... turn it on only to use the phone or to check voicemail/text messages... turn it off and use Wifi for data only (which would still deliver email).

That depends on how you define "troll"...

I'm an iPad owner, but not an iPhone owner. As it stands, Apple are making a real mess of things. The 4S battery life saga is a bit of a disaster, and trying to update our iPad to iOS5 was a total nightmare, much worse than any of Apple's earlier updates, which have always worked first time. So, I'd give Apple about 3/10 at the moment...

a wouldnt bother.. usage is on mine is 1%-3% a min after update, going get my money back. usless this is ....

I've been using it since it was released in beta, and I am certain it addresses many if not all of the issues people are complaining about. And not to be unkind, but I really don't believe you when you say you get 1 - 3% discharge per minute. If that were true, you would run out of power after between 34 and 100 minutes on a full charge, and I have never seen anyone make that claim. Be honest - are you perhaps exaggerating a bit (or a lot, as the case may be)... or do you actually own one of these phones?

If you are truly seeing those sorts of declines, then you should take the phone back because you have a faulty battery.

That doesn't actually turn 3G off. There is no way to turn 3G off unless you turn on Airplane mode.

Anyway, I updated to 5.1 and have so far seen an improvement in battery life in the short time I have used it since. Hopefully this solved the issue, time will tell.

Hmm..... cellular signal remains, but cellular data is off. Try it out on your 4S. Go to Settings > Gneral > Network > Cellular Data and turn it off. Note that the '3G' indicator no longer appears in the top left of your home screen.

I just ran a series of tests on my phone, and these are my findings:

  • I can send and receive text messages. I used a web browser client to send my phone a text message, thus eliminating any confusion as to where the text message was coming from.
  • With WiFi on, I can surf the net and receive email. I don't get new Visual Voicemail notifications with just WiFi.
  • I used my work phone to call my phone. I even see it appear on the 'recent' list.

Based on these findings, turning off Cellular Data turns off both 3G and EDGE data, but I still maintain some kind of cellular signal link. So, what I think Kris actually meant by '3G Network' is '3G data', not necessarily the cellular signal. Which would make sense if he was saying that he turns it on only to check mail, turning it off afterwards.
