iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Do a settings reset... As I would guess some phantom activity has triggered.

That's not really new and unfortunately it does not work for me...

Of course it is a easy thing to do because all apps and data will remain on your mobile. Only a few network an VPN settings are lost after a settins reset.

Maybe it will worke for some others.

I I switch off all smartphone features and data connections - what's the reason to buy an iPhone??

All the stuff mentioned before had worked with my iPhone. As written above I only have these issues for the last seven days - before that day everything worked fine and I had a standby time of 60-70 hours with moderate use.

Now from one day to an other this has changed. Different from your device mine is loosing most of the energy if I'm at home where I have my WLAN. So I think Apple has a lot of work to do on iOS 5 because I think there is not only one bug left in the software...

Guys, maybe it will help to some of you.

I had some awful battery issues when first started using 4s 64Gb.

Then I entered Fetch new data menu in Settings/Mail. I always thought Push is off, but in Advanced menu I noticed that nothing was on Manual mode. Right after I put everything on Manual I got at least 30-40% increase of battery life. And NO draining at all while idle. The battery is anyway somewhat worse than the one of my iPhone 4, but still now I get at least one day (24 hours) of heavy use.

Good luck!

bleepingApple,

Did you notice if your SIM Applications (Settings->Phone->Sim Applications) are functioning properly? As I said earlier I have performed the same tests as you and observed the same usage. I also noticed (after seeing it in another post) that my SIM Applications appear to hang when I click on the menu options. Sometimes I can get to a sub menu but they never complete the operation requested.

@bright raven,

If your SIM applications are not working, then you have exactly the same problem as me.

I reported a bug to apple devs, and after a long time, the cause was found (but not a solution yet, unfortunately).

Your battery drain is being caused by the baseband, which keeps crashing and restarting every few minutes, because it doesn't like your SIM card. You may have also noticed problems when you set a SIM PIN code.

There are two options at the moment to resolve this:

1) Keep getting replacement SIM cards until you get one that works, because some of them have different technology in them (don't ask me, I don't know much about SIM cards, but some of them have different memory sizes).

2) Get a replacement iPhone 4S - not all batches exhibit this problem, maybe some have different SIM readers in them. I tried my SIM in someone elses iPhone 4S - and it ran like a dream! So SOME of them work, at least.

At the moment there doesn't seem to be any software fix for this, and no amount of tweaking will help your baseband. I don't want to believe it, but it appears to me to be a hardware problem, rather than software. Apple have tried a couple of baseband firmware updates now, and it doesn't seem to be fixing the problem.

Hope the info helps. Book yourself an appointment to see a Genius at your local Apple store and get a replacement iPhone is my advice.

love2lindy -

You may want to consider my approach as it does appear you're in the same situation. Its been three days and I'm still experiencing happiness...2+ days per charge. I don't know many people who have been able to get out of the funk so it would be interesting to see if it works for you.

Reply if you try this and it works...

  • Power off the phone completely by holding down the top button for a bit. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes before hooking up your charger.
  • Let it charge overnight. If it, for whatever stupid reason, suddenly comes back on while charging, power it back off.
  • You may see a slight improvement the next day
  • The following night, charge the phone normally (while running)

This worked for me.

I am onto some fix here.

First I have read a bunch of things on what to turn off yadda yadda yadda.

My 3GS lasted for days and that is because I had it on the EDGE network when it was in stand by mode at all times 😉

Now I can't do that, but I can turn off cellular data. Seems that I can still text and make calls. If I want to check email, use internet, go to the app store, or use an app that is data related, I have to turn it back on.

My daily functions this is not bad for me. I just turn on the wifi at work, and at home to use.

Anyhow I charged it this morning, made no calls, but i used it for 32 minutes today, and send a few TXT messages. After 10 1/2 hours, I am down 5%.

So the math tells me i should get 8 days and almost 5 hours of usage, if I repeated what i did today. Though weekend is here, so I will be on it more.

Give it a try. I just wish Apple made a toggle switch

What exactly does a SIM card do? (I'm on Verizon). I heard that swapping it or taking it out makes a difference. When I take mine out, there is absolutely no change to my phone...I can access 3G, and Verizon data as if it were still there.

On another note. I discovered that I can get MUCH better battery life by turning off data when I'm in a low coverage area. I get terrible battery life regularly, but noticed that I have little to no 3G coverage at work. When I was at my folks for thanksgiving, I had perfect 3G the whole time, and could have lasted a couple of days with regular use. I think I was at over a day of standby, and a few hours usage (wifi, 3g etc) with about 60% left. Still not as advertized, but when it's not trying to search constantly for 3G, it makes a difference.

...now if someone could explain why I even need a SIM card in my verizon 4s, and what it's purpose even is, I'd appreciate it.

I guess I've hit the iPhone 4s jackpot. Not only do I have the same battery issues as everyone else even after turning off almost everything that can sync data and killing apps(which is something I haven't had to do since the very early days of having my original droid) after doing so what's the point of having "the greatest iPhone yet"? I've also get the pleasure of having my phone drop out of 3G constantly. I've even be standing next to co-workers who have the same service (Verizon) that have iPhone 4's that are getting perfect 3G reception. I switched from android phones which Verizon even has 4g LTE in my area to get the iPhone so I could have my phone "just work" and let me say I am very disappointed. If apple would even say "yup, software issue we're not sure what it is right now but were working on it" I'd be fine with that. If they have it narrowed down to a battery supplier that's fine too. I'll tough it out till they get enough replacement batteries, doesn't matter to me I just want to know when to expect a resolution because going through an 8 hour work day after having my phone charging all night and only getting up to 97% while still plugged in and when I leave work its down to 20% after about 45 min. Total of web browsing and 5 minutes of calls is ridiculous.
