iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I find temperature is an issue. With phone in standby mode on a desk very little battery usage 2% over 4 hours, put the phone in my belt carrier where it warms up and will use 15% in 4 hours...... the battery likes to be cool.

Yes, that is characteristic of the type of battery used in most current phone models. It is a part of the facts of chemistry. Not a good thing for those of us who live in rather warm climates. What is needed is a battery technology breakthrough.

Just adding my wee bit for Apple's benefit - if anyone from Apple actually pays any attention to this, that is? I'm an IT Manager for a publishing company using Apple laptops, desktops and servers, as well as iPads and iPhones. We recently received 4S iPhones and most of them cannot stay alive for more than 12 hours even if every possible thing is turned off (bluetooth, location services etc etc) and if no apps are running. Heck if I leave mine sitting on the desk doing absolutely nothing, no apps running, every possible piece of functionality turned off too, it is dead flat inside of 10 hours.

Absolute rubbish.

My old Nokia E75, by contrast, still wakes me up each morning after being cast aside for a month!

Apple seem to be backing away from their excellent server systems and most other types of business product (eg even the new version of Final Cut Pro is rubbish and heading towards being just another consumer-level toy rather than a professional thing) and they seem intent on becoming nothing more than a hi-tech toy shop.

If the 4S battery issue, and their lack of response to this immense problem is anything to go by, I'd say they may be on a slippery slope to oblivion if they're not careful...

They have alienated their traditional commercial market already (video & publishing) by discontinuing X-serve etc and are now evidently doing their best to alienate and anger their consumer market too. i i i...

Here's an overview of how to improve the battery life of the iPhone 4S and why it doesn't have as good battery life as previous generations of iPhone.

Let's start with why it doesn't have as good of a battery compared to say the iPhone 4.

- Dual-core processor (clocked at 800Mhz)

- Same battery as the iPhone 4, despite the more powerful processor found in the 4S

- Siri, along with more reliance on Location Services based on user usage of services

- Better data speeds, 3G radios were upgraded to include HSPA+ support, possibly causing battery loss

- iOS 5, including iCloud syncing and other various new features that are more taxing to the SoC

There may be other reasons why, but those are the basic reasons why the battery life of the 4S may not be as good compared to the previous iPhone.

Now, lets look at how you can increase your iPhone 4S's battery life.

- Disable Location Services in Settings, this removes functionality in many apps such as Siri, Maps, and Weather

- Decrease brightness, the screen draws a ton of power, decrease the brightness in Settings

- Turn off 3G service when connected to WiFi, go to Settings, and Usage (iirc)

- Turn off WiFi when you are on the road to prevent the iPhone from searching for possible networks

- Turn on Airplane Mode at night to turn off all networking

- Turn off Push email, and set it to Fetch. Fetching manually conserves the most battery life

- Cancel app processes after you're done by double tapping on the Home Button, holding down on one of the apps in the multitasking tray until they have red "-" signs on the top left corner. Close the most recent apps, probably five or so

- Enable Restrictions, and restrict Ping (applies if you listen to music on your phone)

- Try to keep your iPhone on an area where heat can dissipate to increase efficiency.

I do not recommend disabling iCloud, as it enables useful features such as Backup (while plugged in and in sleep mode), and Find My iPhone, a useful feature if you ever lose your iPhone.

As I said already, disabling everything (such as those things you list here) made absolutely zero difference to my brand new 4S.

More to the point, why buy a 4S if you cannot use its features for fear of it going flat? Waste of time and money.

The 4S, for at least as many folk as have posted on this thread, is something of a "fail". Simple as that.
