Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I know I stated I would not reply to your posts ever again. But, you actually said something different this time and I agree with you!  If most iPhone 4s owners are not on 3G (UTMS) and only those are effected by battery issue, then certainly most iPhone 4s are not faulty as your previous claims state. So not 80% of all iPhone's but perhaps you mean 80% of UTMS activated iPhone's in use? Even that is high but way more likely than 30,000,000.

Also not that you believe this and maybe you dont care but there is hope. A few other forums here about other issues indicate 5.1 B3 has helped the issues with calls and no service and sim issues, etc as well as battery. So maybe, just maybe if 5.1 ever is released it will help folks in your area of the woods. (GSM folks) Also the 3G toggle will most certainly help if your claims are correct that 2G works fine. At least there will be an option for you then.

Most of the iPhone 4s owners are not on 3G (UMTS) networks so this is why they do not have/report any battery life issue!!!! The battery life issue of iPhone 4s appears only and only if it is used on 3G networks with Cellular Data!!! If all the owners of iPhone 4s would be using 3G networks and cellular data instead of 2G networks then Apple would have had recall all the iPhone 4s.

I'm not sure this is entirely accurate.  I am on a 3G network and have cellular data enabled all the time.  I have not experienced the battery drain issue noted by many on this forum.  A few friends of mine (across Canada) also have the 4s and have not experienced the problems documented in this lengthy thread.  I'm not sure what the cause of the problem would be, but to say that phones operating on a true 3G network (and not 2G) are all affected is a fairly large assumption to make.  Again, I don't know what the actual problem might be.

Hey I agreee with you 100%. As I have stated I dont personally know anyone who does have the problems mentioned here. Most I know are on CDMA but a friend I know who does IT support for his company are all on ATT (GSM network)  and he states no issues either. I am of the belief its more related to a bad run of handsets or a configuration issue. Its really weird the issues reported and fixes that seem to help are all different. Some folks dont appear to be fixed no matter what they do, even with 7 or 8 different handsets. Again to me that points more to a configuration or location with poor signal.  Otherwise really bad luck to keep getting faulty handsets over and over.

It may be worth while considering whether the battery life issues (and other issues re: static) are a result of cellular operating bands/frequencies used by the various carriers around the world.  This could explain geographic or regional differences for the issues described, as well as issues that may be specific to phones with a particular carrier (ATT vs T-Mobile, etc).  Regardless, hopefully iOS 5.1 will address concerns.

    Dear All,

I am lurking around this thread for quite some time as I have bought a 4s (32GB, white, serial number starting with DNPG…) end of Oct. last year and was confronted with the well known "phantom usage" problem and the resulting short battery life. In fact, the best I managed to get out of the phone was around 1day and 5 hours of stand-by with basically making no use of it at all. Nevertheless, the phone would record about 60% of the stand-by time as actual usage time…

To cut a long story short, I tried about all tips and hints given on here and all over the internet. I switched off Siri, all location services and all mail accounts. I resetted the phone numerous times. I restored the phone. I resetted the phone and sat it up as new (also in DFU mode), I put on the latest IOS (5.0.1 release 406). Nothing really worked out for a longer period of time. In fact, I was about to become crazy, as I managed to get rid of the phantom usage for a short while and then, out of the blue, without changing anything, phantom usage was back…

In a nutshell, I hoped for IOS 5.0.1 which didn't do it for me, I hoped for the 9A406 firmware release, which didn't do it for me, I switched the old micro-sim card against a brand-new one, which didn't do it, and then I hoped for IOS 5.1 - which is not yet released. And as my 90 days of free phone support neared the end I gave up hoping…

So, two weeks I phoned the Apple support. Basically, I told the guy on the other end the whole story… And especially after telling him that I already did a "forced reset" and restored the phone as new afterwards, he was quite sympathetic - and told me that there is no other way than exchanging the phone - which - of course - was fine for me. So he made an appointment to the local Apple Store for the same noon and told me, that I should tell them that already everything was tried regarding the phone, and the only remaining option is to exchange it - which I did.

The genius bar guys gave me a new (or refurbished? - frankly, I don't care) phone (serial number starting with C39GK). And what can I say… So far, it is all good! As you can see from the screenshot attached, the last charge lasted for about 3 and a half days with light usage, and, very important in my opinion, the phone does not show any signs of the formerly encountered "phantom usage". Fyi, I did not restore from a former backup so far, but only sync'ed my contacts and music and restored everything else manually.

After all, conclusion from my side is, that it is NOT a hardware problem (battery was fine acc. to a test conducted in Apple store, which I have no problem to believe in as the phone was showing normal behavior in between…), but a complex problem which is not necessarily erased by resetting the phone. In the best case it is masked by the shutdown of all services and applications which make the iPhone an iPhone, but a simple cellphone instead. As all of us have spent quite big bucks on this device, that can't be the solution…

So I really advice you to switch your phone in case you experience these kinds of trouble. Exchanging the phone was no problem at all (the Apple guys and girls were really helpful) and I really start to love the phone again ;-) As already said, serial number of the new phone is starting with C39, and it is wearing a french batch about risk of injuries due to excessive volume...

So, to cut it short, thank you all for your advices and proposals of dealing with or working around the problem. Nevertheless, I would advice you to contact Apple and get a new phone (for as many times as it takes to have a "failure-free" one...). This phone is simply too good to not being able to fully enjoy it!

    Wish you all the best,

    Fabs_Hamburg

I don't know why it's really important to find out if the majority of the device are affected or not. Frankly in my opinion the release of the 4S was a terrible blunder in so many ways - Apple even managed to affect its 3GS/4 installed base. Apple needed a wake up call, most likely they got it now. Maybe it's unlikely that the majority of the phones have issues at this point. But then again, it's important to not have selective memory. At launch it wasn't 5.0.1, it was 5.0 - the majority of the phones had issues. Furthermore, well known apps like FB and Twitter and others most likely ended up crippling the device, the restore process hasn't been up to par and is unpredictable - forcing the user to waste valuable time manually installing - there's been rogue cellular data use, issues with Siri, IR, warm devices, further noise with the device, sim issues, carrier based issues, the users' desire to help hasn't been harnessed in any helpful way here, geniuses have been telling a different story to everyone who seeks support, the battery indicator and usage stats are inaccurate, there's been yellow screens, problems with mail integration, the ignorance of a great part of the user base has been demonstrated by their complete cluelessness about the device specifications or lack of multitasking (and I'm not even talking about the arrogant, cynical, condescending, conservative and intellectually rigid type of support one often gets from the multilevel users in these forums), there's been camera lens rattling, and even at this point there is no way for a user to know which app in low memory state polls the network, there is no way to route data to 2G, iCloud has been hyped yet it hasn't been properly balanced and it was weak reasonning to push its use at launch - as was configuring the device so aggressively by default, just as it was useless to restrict Siri use to the 4S to create differentiation, or create a device simply to solve the antennagate and have something in the burner for the launch cycle to be complete, and many people have used considerable amounts of time tinkering with their devices. The device and all the tech in there is great no doubt - but one has to acknowledge how messy this was and still is. Honestly we'll never have the big picture. No offense but many many Apple users have settled for less than amazing and they know it, yet I personally would trust only a few of them, under supervision, to tell the truth about the device, seeing their love for the manufacturer inhibits them from even claiming a new device when it fails under warranty - then for all I know everyone is charging at launch time behind closed doors, or scaling down their daily use to make the device last or enjoying an experience that is quite different from the usual Apple experience. Or Apple is now simply replacing devices with tweaked devices and app devs are starting to cope at last with 5.0+ and pushing down upgraded apps which slowly helps (btw was there even a 5.0 beta and how could mainstream apps be allowed to fail at launch). There is a clear distortion phenomena. How many times have I had to undo usage claims by users here. Why were they bragging about usage when there was nothing to brag about really... was it to hype or push faith on those who doubt? I don't trust very much yes men people who believe in magic - not saying any of you are. Some people really helped in here, and their efforts remain, but had Apple got it right, this could have been contained differently and more intelligently. Another theory of mine is about class. The iDevices are the devices of the new socialites of this world. I've come to believe that satisfied Apple users rely on multiple devices to get general satisfaction - and battery life. Of course, if one has a Macbook, and iPhone, an iPad, an iPod and an Apple tv box, then usage is spread on the device ecosystem, and the iPhone is simply the portable brand logo status object that one uses in public but it should be used 30-60 minutes a day in the big cities with perfect coverage when you own a car with the charger to tag along. There's nothing wrong with that mind you but I personally will never be that type of person. I don't want to become something different or have to think different to be able to enjoy a device. For me the value must lie entirely within the device per se, not within an ecosystem and lifestyle that surrounds it.

I hope you guys get more value next time over. I hope Apple makes it happen for your sake.

I used to think my battery life was bad too, but over the last few days I've tried a couple of things.

Stopped using Gmail through exchange, turned off all notifications on Facebook (they never seemed to work anyway!) and turned off all System Services in Location Services.

I use iCloud all the time and things like Twitter, phone calls, sms, reading emails etc on the phone as and when I need to.

My phone is currnetly sitting at 53% battery remaining with 1 day 2 hours standby and 3 hours usage. I know I'm not a heavy user of the phone, but it is a massive improvement, I used to charge my phone every night.

I don't believe setting up Gmail through exchange will alter these times a great deal as I got similar drain overnight using Exchange and Gmail setup.

I've no idea if the changes I made have anything to do with it, but just thought I'd share.

I don't have time to read everything here but here's what i did:

Go to Location Services and then System Services and turn tham all off. I also turned almost all of my notifications off and turn the notification center off. I don't use Siri and I manually retrieve my messages.

I only use about 3% of my battery overnight and the phone lasts a couple days before it gets down below 20%.

Exactly! Why even have a phone if you don't use any of the features? And it's 2012, souls you really have to turn everything off on a phone just to survive through the day ( or nite ) on one charge?? I mean come on! From 100% charge down to 59% in about 6 hours just laying there?? That to me is not acceptable!
