Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Did you restore from your iPhone 4? If so go and "reset all settings", then setup as new (it will keep all your data) then drain the battery all the way until it shuts off with the spinning deal. Then charge back to 100% preferable overnight but at least 1 hr after 100%. That has been know to resolve your issue for a lot of people. Especially if you restored from an older device.

    Settings>general>reset>reset all settings

I have the same apps and the same settings on my iphone4 and that phone was on 98%, now granted the 4s have a faster processor, but come on. Since my battery drains so fast that means I won't get more than roughly 12 hours standby time, that's not acceptable.

That is false. li-ion can be charged anytime its convienent to do so. They actually perform better when topped off. Also the cycle is not how many times you charge but a sum of the percentages. Also Apple recommends to drain it completely once a month. That will also calibrate your phone software and the actual battery energy and make it report more closely to actual power. @rphunte42, I was told to not charge the phone until it runs below 20% to increase it's life. Is this not true?

That's why I don't charge it every day.

I'm no expert, but I'd like to point out that this is not just a phone, but a mini computer! Nobody expects the battery of even the best netbook to last over a day with constant use!  Sure, our old phones that just made and received calls lasted a week between charges, but this is a totally different animal.

It's all good - I'm simply not at that level of disussion. 2 days of standby with 3 hrs of use each day seems fine but you're not talking about 3G internet and calling - you usage is not properly qualified in that respect. Plus with manual fetch of mail and little social networking, that's all good, but then it seems in comparison with a netbook, you've basically traded screen real estate for... standby time - to each his own I guess - so maybe a good segment of iP4S users are into what I coin now "subnetbooks". But I thought those devices were about mobile social awareness i.e. things popping to indicate stuff that happens in the virtual world in real time. No offense mind you.

No, I'm all too familiar with the (very) little computer analogy. And I'm basically challenging a syllogism... which I could sum up like this:

    P1 - It's a little computer (with many features I turn off)

P2 - My dated experience of the Android device yields little battery life

R - The iPhone4S has great battery life

Trying to make a point that the reality is more like :

P1 "Amazing" had X battery life

P2 "Picking where amazing left off" has X-1 battery life

P3 Newer Android handsets have comparable wifi battery life usage

P4 3G data mobility is luxury, we prefer the economic wifi at home or the office

R The new amazing can be amazing but is less than amazing in terms of battery life, which is further comparable to newer Android handsets in terms of wifi use with the economic users in mind...

Because I like you guys - a bit - I'll give you the solution. It's simply that you have to be fair with the arguments. It's on 3G data that the iP4S shines compared to Android devices... it's also about the app store and the integration quality of iOS. So this is why you should love your device, in my opinion. Wifi based arguments are simply baseless...

    Good luck!

what are you saying? that iPhone battery life can be compared to that of similar Android handsets?

    Is that so surprising?

sorry I might be reading this all wrong, but it's been a long day for me and I'm probably being more dense than usual!!

It's not "so surprising". tl;dr I'm fighting against the "hype". That's all!

I set up the 4s as a new phone, installed all apps from the AppStore and so on, but again, and I'm not giving up on this, a 41% decrease in batt life in sleep mode?? Give me a break.

The 9a406 update did magic for the battery in my iPhone 4S 16GB! The carrier signal seems better, no lost Internet connection and the phone seems more stable! It seems like Apple is squashing som bugs here and that this isn't a hardware problem after all! Also I did a restore from backup, and more than 1GB more free space.

Vodafone is one of the largest mobile phone companies in the UK. It provides the equipment and the mobile telephony/data network I use.

Who knows what issues there where going on in the background when all the mobile providers were basically in a race to be the first to get the 4S into service. I suspect that they like most phone companies were wotking on the basis tht the 4S would be pretty much the same as the 4 in terms of its demands on the network.

I had that issue as well, I got up at 08:15 and my battery was dead by 1:30 that afternoon.  I had been to the genius bar twice, once they reloaded the phone, the second time they gave me a new one. They really are very easy to deal with, unfortunately, the problem still persisted.  I noticed that the phone kept updating mail and nothing ever updated. I deleted my icloud account and I have been using my pnone since 07:30 this morning and it is now 9:24 pm and I have made face time calls, sent and received text and mail and had a few phone calls and my battery life is at 75%.

Check the mail and especially the iCloud account.  When you resync the phone make sure the iCloud account does not come back on.  I hope it works for you...I don't use iCloud so it is no loss to me.

I love my iPhone 4s, but my battery drains worse than my old 3G!

I'm on Dutch T-mobile network, no JB, but I lose about 10% per hour, which means it doesn't survive 1 working day...

Hope Apple gets to a solution soon...
