Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Man, these forum posts are popping up everywhere. I found another one here and they are complaining about the exact same issues. There is one post there that has a lot of suggestions. Maybe they can help someone new here?

To update from 9A405 to 9A406 just connect your iPhone 4S to iTunes (with cable) and select "Restore".

Pity, the software is the same version 5.0.1 but different build, so it will not be offered as an update wirelessly or otherwise. You have to do it via iTunes Restore.

You can check your current build version in Settings->General->About.

It happened to me a couple of days ago...

Was charging my iPhone 4s in my car before getting in the office. (so it was 100% when I started my day)

Once in the office I listened to my music "like usual" (before anyone says that's what burned down my battery )

By the time I got to lunch my battery was down to 18%... WHAT THE ... I was freakin out... It was almost impossible normally should have been around 70% or something (I didn't used more than listen to music, no skipping songs or anything...)

Go to lunch with work collegues... We had to check something on internet so take out our iPhones (mine and my collegues) my 3G was on all seems fine... but while he already got the page we were looking for mine was still looking for something... white page and that's about it...

Come back to my office reconnect my iphone... and the charge takes FOREVER to load...

At the end of the day, I try to go on App Store... and nothing happens (same at lunch time...)

So I decided to try something... Hard Boot... since then... NO PROBLEM... I'm more than half the day done and I'm still around 60%...

Was it a one time thing? Is this the problem that many people are facing... I don't know but if it can help some of you guys I'm happy...

It seems like my iPhone lost the connection with the network... but kept trying to connect (even if it was showing 3G)... and just burned down the battery...

    Good Luck

My Batt life was really good then just started draining so quickly. Tried all the advice above nothing worked. However, my memory was nearly full on 4s with pics and film of our new baby, transfered them all to the laptop and battery life has been restored to what it was before!?! Random but it worked! Just got 19 hours on standby with everything on and only ran it down to 30%, thats with wifi usage, loads of texting, a several 30 min telephone calls. Maybe worth a try...

Here's a question I cannot find an answer to, how big is the actual firmware update file/download?

I encountered the No SIM / Invalid SIM / No Service problem 3 times in the last few weeks and my provider in South Africa asked me to update to firmware 9A406 which is now in progress but it is taking quite a long time to download. Anyone have any idea of how big this download file is?

HOPEFULLY 9A406 will see an improvement to my battery life but I will only know that in the days to come.

Never mind, found it here - http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Firmware

849 mb in size I really wish Apple would pop up a message in iTunes informing you how big it is. We PAY for bandwidth here in SA, there's 1/10th of my monthly allocation GONE on the first day of the month.  I would have waited until after midnight to do this using the free monthly allocation I have between midnight and 5am.

For those, who say the 4s lasts 5-6 days in Airplane mode, even if it has the battery drain issue or not (thinking that the problem is with the radio chip) I must say it isn't true, at least not in all cases! Last night I put my 3GS (5.0.1) and my 4S (5.0.1-9A406) next to each other, switched them to Airplane mode and memorized the battery percentage: 3GS - 74%, 4S - 42%. It was around 1 AM. When I woke up at 10:15 AM, I looked at them, to see the battery levels: 3GS - 72%, 4S - 29%. I know, the battery level decrease is not a linear thing, but this difference is so big, that I think this must hardware problem. Now I decided to give a chance for the upcoming 5.1, and if it doesn't help (and I'm afraid it won't) I will take it to the ASP and try to get replacement. For those, who might say, it could be caused by backgound processes: my 3GS ran 21 processes in the bacground and my 4S ran 6. Some might say I'm not using my phone correctly (I read comments like this previously), but it looks like I can't use only my 4S correctly, cause I had no problems like this with my 3G and 3GS...

I have the same thing, what is apples response to this??? It seems to me that it makes almost no difference if you have everything running or switched off. There is something in the background running like crazy! This needs to be sorted out by Apple pronto!

    @dkalchev

Did you update from 9A405 to 9A406?

If so, did you restore from backup after updation or setup the phone as New? And did you notice any significant improvements?

I ask this because I am on 9A405 and for a large amount of time, my battery life was excellent, however it has been trash since the past 10 days. Also, my phone gets hot whenever I access 3G data or prolonged data usage.

Is it advisable to update to 9A406?

Of course I did.  When I was working (substitute teacher), I usually used airplane mode, and only used the phone at lunch, and break.  Still, it barely made it through a normal day.

Your chart shows the 4S at the top of the list, just under a phone with optional extended battery.  I read that the new Motorola RAZR Maxx made 16.5 hours in a review.  Now it Apple could just fit a 3300mAh battery into its next phone....
