Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Hi sbailey4!

I tried almost everything, to save the battery power, and I think I just succeeded.

Can you please do the calculation for me?

    usage: 6 hours 51 minutes

    standby: 1 day 21 hours

    1% battery remaining

with WIFI turned on (till the end), safari 3.5 hours, imessage 30 minutes, talking 30 minutes and in the rest just did nothing. (checking the battery, setting the alarm, etc.)

    Usage specs for the 4S - http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html:

Talk time: Up to 8 hours (12.5% per hour drain) on 3G, up to 14 hours (7.1% per hour drain) on 2G (GSM)

Standby time: Up to 200 hours (0.5% per hour drain)

Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G (16.6% per hour drain), up to 9 hours (11.1% per hour drain) on Wi-Fi

Video playback: Up to 10 hours (10% per hour drain)

Audio playback: Up to 40 hours (2.5% per hour drain)

You would think a creative barista could do simple maths.

The guy is not a walking calculator...

p.s. Inspired by today's comments, I thought I should point out that the reason why Internet over 3G is rated at 6hrs and takes 16.6% per hour of battery life for instance is because 100% divided by 6 equals 16.6%. That line of reasonning should prove useful!

@sbailey4 - Actually, my preferred combination is horse+sleigh to go on the snow!! You wouldn't believe how this will take you where no Range has taken you before. Weird that 1 horse can beat hundreds of horse power in this respect - so many things are overrated in this life. You are right though, I own no car - I rent one when I require to. Public transport is quite adequate where I live, and I chose my neighborhood for its proximity services and intelligent urban planning - I'm at walking distance from hospitals, schools, groceries (carrying such by hand will help you walk straight and alleviate text neck, not that I require it), restaurants, liquor store and coffeeshops plus I'm 10 mins from downtown and office with transport. I'd support a full ban on cars in my neighborhood/city anytime.

@JS6 - Thank you for your kind comment on my fuel tank analogy - I couldn't make a day job out of it mind you, as it would require me to keep an Apple user nearby at all times for inspiration!! Oh wait, it is possible lollll. They're everywhere!!

@rphunte42 - conical gas tank, comical battery life, close enough loll.

Is it normal to have at least 30 processes on going in my iphone when I'm not using it?

I checked it in battery doctor.

45/200= 22.5%  stdby .5/8= 6.25% talk  6.35/7.5=84.6% internet 3g/wi-fi  so you have used 113% of 100% and still have 1% left. Nice Job! LOL. I bet you could sell that device for $900 US to most folks on this forum and get you another one.  Apparently most internet was wi-fi and not 3g so lets do this 6.35/9= 70.5% internet use. So instead used 99.25%  with your 1% left over so looks to me like you are dead on the max specs posted by Apple.

BTW almost 2 days and almost 7hr use is good by any standards without doing any math.  Glad you got it working. Guess we need to ask what you did? Please dont say you turned off everything or airplane mode or whatever, even if you did, you will get flamed horribly here.    HAHA

I'm quite tired today but I don't understand how you came up with his 6.35/7.5 for 3G/wifi - he didn't disclose where the 2.2 (6 5/6 - 4.5) other hours went - but it seems he was only using the UI during that time - or are you basing this on a prior post which I didn't read? You seem to infer he was using the device over 3G/wifi for (total time - 3G calls). I believe first of all you and davidch's estimation of 7.5 is useful for undisclosed usage to profile the results for a mixed 3G/wifi internet use, but it should not be used when the usage protocol is disclosed by the user. Here he said 3.5 safari and 0.5 iMessage - hinting to wifi only from what I can read. So this would be 4/9 = 44% +22 + 6 - 1 = 71% - if I'm right this simply points to a not unreasonable yet superior that 0.5 standby drain, most likely close to 1% (mail, low power state apps what not). Or am I an uncreative barista?

I think up to 80 different daemons may run at one time or another depending on configuration/usage etc under 5.0+. Plus some apps which are allowed to run in low power state i.e. in the "switcher".

3.5 hours safari (wifi), 30 minutes imessage, 30 min talking. in the rest 2-2.5 hours I was like takeing some pictures, setting the Settings, looking at pictures, checking the battery etc. NO games or music.

p.s.: did 2 restores and setting time zone and siri was OFF. everything else was ON. (3G was enabled too. but I was home so I used wifi)

just charged at 100% trough night so now I will disable wifi and I will try just with 3G on. see how big's the diffrence.

I just loaded the 9A406 firmware this morning. After it rebooted all my apps and data were still there, I never got asked to set up as "New Phone" or "Restore From Backup" ?? Is this OK or must I do a Reset and then reload the firmware again?

I can't comment on battery life or improvement to the SIM problem just yet as it's barely been 30 minutes since I loaded the firmware.

Do you also notice when your battery hits 1% that it can stay like that for an hour or more??

Interesting. When mine hits 1% I can still browse, check mail, whatsapp for well over an hour before I manage to get the phone to turn itself off. Shows how very innacurate the battery percentage meter is.
