Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I lose about 4-5% overnight in standby (8 hours), that's with most notification features turned off. So your battery life is definately very good!

They claimed its new...not refurbished...I can't really tell anyways...they still have the original sticky covering front and back...

Honestly...I just care about the battery part...as long as lasted long...don't care if ti's new or slightly new...

For me wi-fi does not make a lot of difference as I tried it one day just to see. It was about 5% or so less remaining (so used 5% more battery). I believe folks who are suggesting to turn off wi-fi to help battery are suggesting so if there is no wi-fi available as the spec is for 6 hr over 3g but 9 hr over wi-fi. I have turned off the "ask to join" but leave wi-fi on all the time. I suppose its still looking so when you are in a preferred area it connects but again I am almost always near some wi-fi source. Certainly when ask to join is on, driving though a subdivision its popping up constantly with the available networks.

Siri off? are you saying totally or the raise to speak option?

I have a program on my PC that lets me monitor what users are on my router.  I can see when my iPhone is actually connected on wi-fi, and it turns off the wi-fi if it isn't used for a while, or you put it in 'sleep' mode.  The 10 hour figure is for USE, not 'I have wi-fi turned on'.  Certainly, it peeks at the wi-fi signals in your area now and then, but doesn't connect unless it sees a new one you have connected to before.  As in when I walk into a Sam's store.  Unless you use it constantly, it won't use much power at all, just when it looks for new signals.

Turning off 'ask to join' may affect this timing.

Are you removing iot from the charger when it hits 100%? The fully charged state happens a while AFTER it hits 100% so you have to leave it a bit longer. At minimum until the lightning bolt turns to a plug. Otherwise maybe a hard reboot is in order. (sleep button and home button at same time til phone shuts down)

Why does my iphone never give me usage data? I've had the phone 6 weeks or so, it's been fully charged plenty of times already but continues to say "Usage times will be shown after iPhone is fully charged".

Mine almost always shows 100% after a few hours charging.  I have never had a problem with getting it to start the usage time, but have noticed that it will zero the times well before reaching 100%.

I've been following this thread since October and it appears to be largely an exercise in futility with thousands upon thousands of recommendations that don't ultimately work for most complainers. Apple aught to bite the bullet financially, admit they have a problem they don't have a work around or solution to, and offer a free upgrade from this model to the 5 when it comes available. I'd recommend sticking to earlier models and getting refunds where possible

Actually, a lot of users have been helped.  Most of them seem to just leave, and not report that something helped.

That's why I'm waiting for the thread to hit 1M hits as I'm pretty sure that they'll be making such an announcement right here - we may all get iTunes vouchers for free music!!! Just kidding lolll. I don't think this is happening anytime soon. The disconnect really comes from lower standby time specifications compared with the iP4 vs. marketing. Plus they solved in part the issue with 5.0.1 + 9A406, whereas other sub issues have been solved, sometimes only temporarily though, by manually syncing instead of restoring, updating apps, resetting and ultimately exchanging the device for a tweaked one - I agree with the theory that at this point, the exchange devices may be different... before some people would exchange the device up to 4 - 7 times and would consistently get bad results, yet now some people have exchanged the device and had much better results with their "new" handset. Who knows.

I agree some users have bad handsets and nothing will do. Jumping on the iP5 bandwagon when it arrives to the station might be just as foolish as waiting in line for the 4S. Consumers should make informed decisions, read reviews and peer comments before buying.

I suspect that many of those users rush home, connect the phone to iTunes, and restore, thus perpetuating whatever problem might have been hidden in settings, or incompatible apps, from the old phone to the new one.

Interesting topic from a newsletter I get. No specific models mentioned. rphunte42 did you write this lol?   Here is an excerpt:

Speaking of smart-phones, though, one of the biggest issues with those devices is battery life. Now it's great that carriers have rolled out phones with super fast LTE networks, and download speeds up to 20 Mbps - but 4G eats up the power very quickly. The first thing I do when I get a new phone is tweak its settings to try to squeeze out a bit more battery longevity, and I've resorted to buying bulky extended batteries for some phones, that more than double the usage time but also destroy the phone's lightweight and slim profile.

At CES this year, power solutions were all over the place. None of them are ideal, but we seem to be making some progress on solving - or at least ameliorating - the battery problem. And if not, it's not for lack of trying.

The "traditional" solution is to buy and carry an extra battery or two for your phone or laptop. That can be expensive, depending on the model of your device. You can also get universal external batteries that will work on most any laptop, phone, digital camera, etc. but again, these can be pretty pricey. Another drawback when you're traveling is that extra batteries and external batteries add extra weight and bulk to your luggage.

If you travel by car, you can always use a DC power adapter that will let you charge your device(s) off your vehicle's battery, and they also make adapters designed to convert the power from your boat or private aircraft. There are also solar laptop battery chargers that you can use if you're hiking in the wilderness (as long as the sunlight shines through - maybe they would be better suited for hiking in the desert).

One of the interesting power-related products that I saw at CES was the Powerbag line of backpacks, briefcases and travel bags that have integrated on-board batteries and connectors built into the bag for added convenience. Duracell had a booth at CES too, and they have some innovative products such as wireless power charging technology that's built into desks, tables and other pieces of furniture.

No, I didn't ,but it does sound like someone mirrors my sentiments very well.

Don't make a big deal out of this - NO ONE is getting 1% drain on 8 hours standby and such. One may get a battery indicator showing 1% drop in 8 hours, which is quite different. There is no magic. The point is he doesn't have any unusual drain at the moment. Your standby drain is on specs, like his. It's not going to get any better.

Indeed, but you have to agree that not expecting a user to do this is unrealistic and goes against what the Apple experience should be. So it's "picking up where amazing left off, minus the restore"...

The exceprt was interesting - although there's no way I'm wearing a jetpack to power my credit card sized phone. Some of those ideas have been discussed here some time ago - kinetic/solar garnment with built-in jacks, charging surfaces/wireless charging and all. Yet in the excerpt, nothing was said about the handsets form factors - as if it were a given - choice of components and feature set provided by the OS. My friend has a 64GB Touch and she removed it from the leather thingy she's normally using - I was again surprised at how ridiculously small those devices are - and again I ask the question, why? Why is it thin to the point I could use it as a slotted screwdriver?? Could you use just one antenna on a bigger device that has a colorful metal casing like the Nano of yonder? Could you build a variant of the device with a Mirasol display and no bluetooth/GPS/accelerometer/compass? Could you scale back on the locations and persistency bull. Is it too much to ask to have power profiles that allow for downclock/toggle of hardware features? And finally, most interestingly, who's money is behind those power solutions ventures?

If you do have issues, why not communicate with the seller and see what are his policies regarding returns/refunds?

What games were you playing with the phone? If you played Epic Citadel/Infinity Blade like games, the phone should yield 3 hours at most... so how much usage do you get out of using only browsing/apps on 3G/wifi and calling - without games?

As has been mentioned many times, the batter meter percentage is NOT linear, and not particularly reliable.  One of the reasons Apple recomends a full discharge to cutoff and then complete recharge about once a month is that this will recalibrate the chip that decides how much power has been drained from the battery.
