Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I can't get it replaced since I bought the phone from the US and am using it in India

    Damnn iPhone's limited warranty.

I am really sorry to hear that! Anyway you should still contact Apple (by email, phone, etc.) and let them know your situation! It is not your fault that Apple sold you defective iPhone 4s. Maybe maybe Apple will try to do something for you if Apple feels guilty about it....

As I said I am NOT here excusing Apple for anything, there is most certainly battery issues with the 4s of which I am an owner of one and have been through various battery problems in the 6 weeks since I bought it. The fact is that there is a LOT more at play than just the phone and I am simply sharing my real world experiences, nothing more, nothing less.

I do agree though that the way the iPhone talks to networks or handles network problems is probably a lot less optimal than other simpler phones like a Nokia. As in my earlier post I had similar problems with my Blackberries too, 2 days battery life was reduced to 8 hours due to network issues. At that time had I had an iPhone it probably would have drained in 2 hours, so yeah, iPhone does handle network problems worse than other phones.

You suggest Apple has started replacing this faulty part with another in recently shipped iPhone 4S?

YES! I suggest that. It looks that until 1-2 weeks ago over 80% of the iPhone 4s had the faulty part in it.

Or, it may be just the 'automatic' 2G/3G switching that this Qualcomm chip does. For some people, where they have good and stable 3G it does not matter. But for those thathave spotty 3G coverage it maybe great pain.

Apple is re-implementing the "switch 3G off" option in iOS 5.1 as well as other improvements and those who have tried it claim to have much improved batery life. Without replacing their phones.

Some of the "new" iPhones that you talk about, might just have new microcode already pre-loadded. What does yours show in say "modem firmware" ( in General-About)? Mine shows 1.0.14

These days, most hardware is programmable. They do much different things when programmed differently.

    Hi Guys,

I would like to mention the experience with my iphone 4s. You won't believe but since I made a network reset and a soft reset (holding power + home buttons), well my iphone lasts much more. I'm talking about more than 1 day in standby ... with a battery drain percentage around 2,40% per hour against the previous 10%.

I guess something worked out ...

    Before concluding ... I have a 4s 16gb 5.0.1 firware 9a405.

After resetting my I-phone allready three times, with all the headaches of loosing precious time, data en re activating numerous accounts etc., every time the problem returned after a few days and my battery life is a joke! 20% after 8 -10 hrs after a full reacharge! Just recently Honda had to pay a $7000,= fine for overestimating fuel efficiency of their cars. Comments suggested this could cost them billions if other dissatisfied customers would demand the same compensation. Perhaps a class action suit gettting compensation from Apple for selling a product that does not perform as advertised in terms of battery life would get a more appropriate response from Apple instaed of pretending there is nothing wrong! I would not mind getting a $ 500 refund for very poor performance!

Yes Richard, That is just plain simple common since. Some here refuse to see it that way and refuse to acknowledge that Apple has also posted an "best practices" optimization document to make battery life better. NOT just because there is a battery drain issue in iOS but because that is normal basic smart phone optimization for any phone out there today. Oh well. Cant help folks who's real objective it to come here to complain and not come here to try get the most out of their battery.

To counter that comment, I don't understand why you would keep features running that you don't use!

The only features I've turned off are those that I don't use. I have Siri, iCloud, WiFi etc. on all the time.

These are the only things I have switched off at present and I'm getting the best battery life I've had with a smart phone (I've had a couple of HTC's an Iphone 3GS and a Samsung on android).

Location Services-System Services - they don't offer any benerfit anyway as far as I can tell, just send data back to Apple.

Bluetooth - I've never used it on any handset, bluetooth used to affect battery life on old Nokia phones too if people remember that?

Stocks Widget - I just don't want it showing, I've never followed the stocks (I've no idea if this makes any difference though)

I can't complain at my phone and battery life at the minure, I'm perfectly happy.

Yes that is normal operation but he stated his never shows up. It is always zero. So thought maybe a full complete charge (which is past 100% mark on the meter) may solve it for him.  Not sure I have ever heard anyone having that particular issue.

Are you removing iot from the charger when it hits 100%? The fully charged state happens a while AFTER it hits 100% so you have to leave it a bit longer. At minimum until the lightning bolt turns to a plug. Otherwise maybe a hard reboot is in order. (sleep button and home button at same time til phone shuts down)

Why does my iphone never give me usage data? I've had the phone 6 weeks or so, it's been fully charged plenty of times already but continues to say "Usage times will be shown after iPhone is fully charged".

Mine almost always shows 100% after a few hours charging.  I have never had a problem with getting it to start the usage time, but have noticed that it will zero the times well before reaching 100%.

Just have my new iphone 4s just for two days.

-I have completely let the phone drain the battery, have it completely charged after.

The battery does not even last half the day.

I have turned of location services, screen brightness is at it's lowest, push notifications are off.

All the small things I could find on the web I've tried out. But still the battery loses a lot!

After one quick call on facetime, and one call with the phone my battery had only 70% left.

(I had just picked it of the charger)

This is unacceptable.. I used to be able to do a lot with my nokia, browsing, fb, twitter, whatsapp, etc etc.. And that battery lasted over three days with intense use.

I have tried all the solutions I could find so far on the internet, none of them seem to help for me!

Any other suggestion? I am really dissapointed with my 4S' battery life. As this is not what I would suspect from such a billion-dollar company as apple.

    Folks,

I can't stand you proud Apple customers moaning about bad battery life. The battery life of a modern smartphone is about 5 hours at best with moderate usage. Digits mentioned in the advertizing are under 'ideal conditions' i.e. the phone near cellular base station with no use at all (and push email off). 4-5 hours are the battery life of most modern smartphones.

Therefore, I suggest to go get the iPhone battery, external, which is like an envelope for the phone. With this, the battery life improves to about 18 hrs with heavy usage.

There is no way to make the phone as slim as iPhone 4s without sacrificing the battery life, its a tradeoff Apple made.

    Get it.

You either get extra chargers to charge the 4s everywhere you could or get a battery envelope case which will boost battery life by making the iPhone thickier.

    While waiting for iOS5.1.........

    1. Connect to wifi whenever possible.   For ME, the battery drain problem disappears when I'm on wifi.
    2. Carry a charger with you.

Also, do not rely on the iPhone's battery indicator info. It's the lithium polymer battery, it can't display what's left exactly, it could be 70% now and 50% a  minute later.

Go get an external battery. There is no other solution no matter which phone you buy, Apple or competitor's.

Modern standard are thin and light. There simply isn't much space inside for the battery, folks.

Matty, if you have tried the solutions here and none have helped and your battery gets hot, you should consider using your warranty and returing the unit for a replacement. Also you didnt reallt state how your specs look. I mean using the phone for browsing or movies etc will drain battery pretty fast but you need to compare to the posted specs. So 3G internet for example is max 6hrs and wi-fi max 9 hrs. All assuming you do nothing else

    MattyEss wrote:

This seemingly did very little for me, although it possibly stopped the battery draining as much when in standby. It did nothing to affect the way my iPhone absolutely chews through battery if being used on 3G for tasks as simple as browsing and WOW does it get hot!

I'm just very disappointed and annoyed at the lack of response to the issue by Apple. After 5.01 was released it was "there I fixed it" and nothing more to add. This also went a long way to selling more iPhone 4s units, when the customer says "I heard there were issues with battery life" the sales person can reply "oh, there was an update to fix that".

But I must say I'm not surprised. Apple certainly aren't going to do anything mental like recall it or anything else that costs them money.

So get used the issues surrounding your iPhone 4s, the problems will only get worse as software and operating system upgrades require more processing power, which in turn will drain the battery faster which will in turn will heat the phone up and eventually it will turn into the sluggish 3G or 3GS beast that you upgraded from. These are the the iphone 4s GLORY DAYS!

If you want things to change and want Apple to notice that you are unhappy speak with your money and get a Samsung for your next purchase or upgrade! Because God knows they arn't losing any sleep (or money) from our moaning on this forum.

There are plenty of smartphones (e.g. Nokia) which last days! Those "modern" smartphones which last 4-5 hours are very cheap and low quality!

I am not proud or not happy Apple customer!

How come that there are plenty of mobile phone manufactures (like for example Nokia) which are able to provide better specifications which are closer to the real life situation? Apple is the worst in this category!
