Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

You are right, some users have problems some don't.

but is very frustrating when it happens to you and apparently there is no way to fix it.

Since I bought my iPhone last week I will exchange it...what an inconvenience

My battery was 100% at 9am I have not used my phone all day and is 60% now (1:43pm)

I did not restore from an old backup on iTunes

Ok  too bad you are having issues. However 99% are not having problems. And you shouldnt have to turn off all the features. Just a few that are not needed. But if you just got it and are dissatisfied, I would return it before the 30 days or whatever your carriers policy is.

I already did the restore, setup as new, everything...

What really bothers me is that I bought the new iPhone because all the features, but they have to be switched OFF if you need a decent battery life, so, at the end you just have a regular phone, Is not just my phone, 99% of iphone users are having the same issues with the battery life.

I have been an Apple fan all my life, but this is just ridiculous.

The last thing that I'm going to do before switching again to blackberry and forget about iPhone is to change the SIM card, that is my last resource.

To exchange the iphone is not going to resolve the issue, it's just a very BAD phone with a very GOOD advertising.

Email accts most likely. Especially if exchange accts. Try and delete your email accts, reset network settings, reboot the phone and see what happens. Then add back 1 email acct at a time. Otherwise possibly a rogue app you have on there is causing issue.

My iPhone says under settings - general - usage

    Time since last full charge

    Usage: 3 hours, 7 minutes

    Standby: 3 hours 7 minutes

And my battery is at 77%

The thing is I have NOT been using it all that time. It was supposedly in sleep mode but it seems to think that is usage time.  Apple has already sent me a new phone an the new one is doing the same thing. This makes me think it's something in my settings that's wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

BTW, You may want to try an check your email accts. Delete them, reset network settings and reboot the phone. Then see how it performs. If all is well add back 1 email acct at a time.  Sometimes the email will get jacked up and cause this phantom usage and excessive drain.  Also you can try this process,it has helped a lot of folks. Certainly worth a try before you exchange it. because only takes a few minutes

[Credit to Davidch for the fix]

i recommend you try my process below with your iPod touch 4th generation. you mention upgrading to iOS 5. if you have not updated to 5.0.1, be sure to do that first.  then follow my process step by step and in order.

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

I believe there is a bug in battery indicator. I charged fully and used it for a while and when it was at 97% I did a hard reset... phone was back at 100%!!!

I've tried a few suggestions described over this topic with low or none results, however, after removing live360º and Google latitude I got the phone to be at 100% for over an hour... didn't last long thou!

anyway, after removing those programs I noticed that I was getting a report diagnostic of a crash at resetcounter(?!)

I've tried airplane mode to see if usage dropped but there is still something using the phone in the background

Guess I have to wait for a bug killing update!

    Reset settings and data,

Where/what exactly are you recommending to reset?

    Settings/reset/Erase all content and settings

Make sure you do a connect to iTunes, so you can re-sync all your stuff after you do this as it resets the phone to out-of-box condition.

I have also had the battery percentage return to 100% after a hard reset.  Might be that it assumes that the current charge is 100% when it resets.  I wouldn't worry about it.

If you have phantom processes, that is you see usage and time since last full charge being the same, or nearly the same, then something is running in the background that shouldn't be running.  There are several free programs that will allow you to examine the internal process table to see what is running, and how long it has been running.  One of them may lead you to the phantom process, especially if you can compare your processes to those on another phone that is working well.

You can closer the mail app (and any other apps that are running) from double tap home button, then hold icon until the red close button comes up then tap each app you want to close.

Not sure what you mean by if 1.35 h stdby  and 34 min use is normal?

Same here. This is my 2nd replacement iphone 4S. 100%-99% in 17-20 minutes which is good after letting it die completely then recharge it fully. This is all used on WIFI, check my email and go into some apps. After from 99% and lower, it'd go down 1% every 3 minutes. I depend on my phone so having to charge at least twice a day instead of once is annoying!

The first two geniuses were helpful, the last one, not even close. The last one pretty much told me to suck it up and wait for a software update. Kind of an *** if you ask me!

Just putting my .02¢ in here.

Last night my 4S battery was at 95% at 1AM.

I listened to the Tune-In radio app (over wifi) then had it shut off after 30 minutes with Nightstand app. I had shut off the screen. Those were the only apps running.

This morning at 9:30, the battery was down to 60%.

iPhone was not used in this time period except as above.

At 4:00 this afternoon, it's down to 12%. Didn't use it a lot between morning and now.

Three short (under 1 min) phone calls, 20 messages, 20 minutes of Internet, Starbucks app. No downloads of anything.

I am off to the Genius bar in a bit to get it checked out.

I really don't see anything suspicious there.  Go through your settings to see if something like iCloud may be causing problems.  I also don't use the iCloud backup, and I don't sync through wi-fi (because if I have to start iTunes on my PC, I might as well plug in the cable and do the job faster, and get a bit of charge at the same time.

I also suggest turning off anything with 'push' notifications.

If you just leave it plugged in to the charger over night, at least you will start at 100%.

Something is amiss.  I have averaged 1.28%/hour today, so far.  Very light usage today.  That would last 78 hours, if the battery meter were linear, which it probably isn't.
