Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    I wish they would make iOS 5.1 beta 3 available to those who are experiencing the battery drain, or at least just a temporary fix that involves the fixes for battery life. I don't want any new features, I just want my phone to not be plugged to a charger once in a while.

    Also I think you guys should stop fighting and being mean just because you don't agree with each other. We should all just be calm and helpful and nice, because we're all just trying to help

    It seems that almost all cases of push email causing excessive battery drain (that s, something running on the phone all the time) are related to Microsoft Exchange. Perhaps it is not push email that is causing this, but rather the Exchange plugin.

    One can go that far to remember that traditionally Microsoft protocols were not designed for any power saving etc and any participating host is expected to stay up all the time and 'actively participate'.

    Of course, this is software issue and will very probably be fixed.

    Duckgirl: the beta is available, you need to register as developer to download. It takes a minute or two. But if you don't enjoy playing with the phone and testing software, I would recommend to wait for a release.

    Umm don't I have to pay the developer's fee for that?

    No. You only pay if you want to design your own applications and install them to your phone.

    If you have very high usage times, compared with Standby time and you know you haven't been using the phone all the time, then by all means this is because you have some software running in the background. Or, you might have some inappropriate "invisible" setting.

    The easiest way is to reset your network configuration Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings

    Note that any remembered WiFi passwords you have will be lost.

    If this does not help, you may have some application installed that is not ok. You may wish to reset all settings (this will not erase your applications and data). Or try removing applications that you don't use.

    If your phone runs iOS 5.0.1(9A405), you may wish to upgrade to 5.0.1(9A406). You are not offered automatic update to this build, because it is the same version, but Apple has rebuilt 5.0.1 in order to resolve some issues. For all I know, it has new modem firmware (that controls the cellular chip) -- at least this is visible.

    You can get build 9A406 by doing Restore in iTunes.

    This procedure will make your phone 'as new' so you will have to restore all setting and applications.

    It is advisable that you do not restore anything from backup I only restored contacts etc via iCloud.

    Everything else you can sync via iTunes. Or perhaps, if you keep it in iCloud. But better to not restore settings as you may have something wrong in there.

    This procedure or parts of it has helped a lot of people here.

    Otherwise, just wait for iOS 5.1 -- it reportedly fixes a lot of background apps issues.

    Thanks for the tips, but I've done all that, over and over again... And AGAIN!

    My list of experiments is veeeeeeeeery long:

    - Auto-Screen brightness Off, with dimmed screen (20% maybe);

    - Location Services/system services ALL off;

    - Notifications set to Manual, only having "phone and text messages" on notifications centre;

    - Wi-fi off (only turned it On for 5 minutes);

    - Cellular Data off;

    - Network Auto-detection set to off;

    - iCloud off/erased account from the iPhone;

    - Erased all e-mail acounts and set Push to off/Fetch set to Manual;

    - "Diagnosis and Usage" set to "Don't Send";

    - Bluetooth off;

    - Restrictions on (disabled Ping, iTunes and Facetime - already tried leaving as it is by default and made no difference);

    - No SIM lockout;

    - Auto lockout set to 1 minute;

    - Closed ALL pages openned in Safari before exiting the app;

    - All apps mannualy closed in multi-task bar;

    - Siri/"Speak to raise" off (after turning it off, turned the phone off and on because there was a known bug that kept the sensor working even after ticking it to OFF - checked with a camera - it's off);

    - Vibration ON, only in Silent Mode;

    - Local Weather turned OFF with no Cities in the list;

    - I've done several restores (some in DFU Mode, some not in DFU, you name it...) and already let the phone drain the battery to 0% several times (more times than I wanted!!)", ALWAYS setting it "As new";

    - Had the two builds installed (405 and 406) and made no difference - Usage time is always going up, even if I don't touch the phone;

    - Added my contacts ONE BY ONE, from scratch;

    - Did an experiment without the SIM Card - the battery lasted for 6 days!

    - Only have the native apps of the builds installed...

    Man, you name it...by now, I've given up!! I'm only waiting to see if the 5.1 will make it better (or not)...if it stays the same, I'll activate warranty...

    But you can have push and decent battery life.

    My email, contacts and calendar are all set to push through Gmail and I'm approaching 2 days standby with 20% battery remaining!

    ????

    really?

    it is usually advised to disable Push to conserve battery. Did not know push could be actually used. Is it Exchange or regular SMTP idle?

    I don't think so; the beta is only available to registered developers who are paying members of the developer program.

    I've setup Gmail through Exchange (following the instructions on Googles site)

    Push does seem to use a bit more battery than fetch, but I still get really good battery performance.

    Now I have push, the only things switched off on my phone are blue tooth and Location Services/System Services and Stocks widget

    Be wise regarding these matters!!

    Encrypted11 already wrote something that makes all the sense in the world to me:

    I'm EXTREMELY skeptical of what he's saying. The file uploaded to those download site *is* possibily a genuine firmware file distributed to that site.

    iOS 5.1 beta compared to iOS5 betas in the past, there is NO WORKAROUND to avoid the server authentication process. and I repeat what I said at the bottom of this post.

    Thoughts on the previous message:

    1. I'm thinking *lure* (no offense intended) is simply an attempt to TRAP users into the betawhich requires Apple's authentication.
    2. You need a way to unbrick (or wait for public release) your locked phone as it isn't associated with a Developer's account
    3. Activation will be offered to you at a cost
    Or you'll have to join the developer program to unbrick it yourself Caution:
    • Many sites out there offer activation of iOS betas at a cost but there are a number of scam sites.
    • Some are real BUT
    • To note, developers in breach of the terms of service risk - termination, blacklisting associated devices from future betas etc

    All I wanna say...

    DO NOT UPGRADE TO IOS 5.1 BETA 3 IF YOU ARE NOT A DEVELOPER!

    You will require server authentication through the relevant Apple site before your beta activates! Therefore if you do that, you'll brick your iPhone until Apple releases 5.1 to the public!

    You may successfully update your phone, but IT WILL BE LOCKED UNTIL YOU AFFILIATE A PHONE WITH A DEVELOPER!

    EdiMC:

    Thing is, if you have very high Usage time compared to Standby time, then something IS running in background on your iPhone. There can be no other reasons.

    What happens if you Restore the phone to defaults and don't install anything -- just charge it and let is stay few hours? Do you still see large Usage time?

    If yes, you may have ghost in your device and should return it, except if you like ghosts, that is.

    duckgirl: true, I checked, its $99. Thought developer resources are free. But in the end it doesn't matter as you don't need any betas anyway. Its all about your settings, so if you're unable to figure out what to change by yourself or here with the help of others, go to some iPhone guru and have him do it for you, it should be quite cheap. Again, if you were in Russia, I would gladly buy your phone as I can handle such situations.

    richard: I am looking forward to test Push later this week (when I have my iPhone delivered).

    People in Russia are battery freaks: they disable everything :-)

    Yep. 20minutes after the resets, with the phone staying still on a desk, I get something like this:

    Waiting time: 20minutes

    Usage Time: 16 minutes.

    I don't know what it is!

    Yesterday, in about an hour, I lost about 10%...it's not linear, sometimes it stops counting, and the battery drain stopps a little bit.

    But, without touching the phone, then it goes again!! Usage time going up, battery level going down!!

    Going crazy with this!!
