Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I purchased the phone on 26th Jan at Univercell, Bangalore. Just curious to know if they replace it. Do I need to carry it to the reseller or Apple Support? I'm trying the different possible options posted on the threads. Replacement should be the final option though.

Take it to the Imagine store....Search one near home....There's one in Forum, there's one in Mantri and a couple more that will handle iPhone....I swapped mine at Kormangla and I advice you take it to Kormangla Forum and they will ask you to leave the phone with them for calibration. They will take a day and if they dont find a problem, they will return you the phone with the observed stats....If they note any deviation from the specs, they will inform you about the replacement and if you are lucky you will get the replacement on the following day or for sure on the second day from the service date......

I hope you were being sarcastic about the number because that would mean every person on earth has an iPhone and there are 36 billion just sitting somewhere...

I recently spoke to a genius about the quite frankly terrible battery life, and he said some people have very good battery life and some very bad, because they get their batteries from two completely separate companies, and they are put in the phones at random.. I would believe that, but this is my fifth iPhone 4S, all replaced through warranty for various reasons, none of which were caused by me, and every single one has roughly the same battery life... Come on apple

I know that I am extremely thick but I thought that when you pressed the home button you closed the app. Not so. Double click it and all the apps. running in the background scroll across the screen. Using the normal delete process on those icons quits the programs. Because I didn't realise EVERY SINGLE APP ON THE PHONE WAS RUNNING. No wonder I had no battery life. Der!!! eh.

They are NOT all running.  SOME apps do continue to run after you press 'home' to exit the screen, but most terminate rather quickly.  They do, probably take up some minor amount of ram, but they aren't ALL using the processor, just a few special ones.

Apple has recognized the battery problems (due to software), and, as employees of the applestore said to me, ALL 4s have the same problem (although some last longer than others)

And no tricks like switch off automatic time setting, putting off notifications or something like that

remember it's an smartphone, not a peperweight

    (sorry for my bad English)

Not ALL.  MIne is fine.  There seem to be several problems that can cause the poor battery life.  One is that some users expect more than a small battery can provide.  Another seems to relate to 'phantom processes' that run all the time.  Another seems related to antenna switching and switching from 3G to 2G/Edge.  I just got back from a trip from Fort Worth to Vicksburg, Mississippi.  Looking at the AT&T coverage map, I noted that I would be switching from 3G to 2G/Edge a lot, so I did the update to 9A406 version of IOS 5.01 before I left.  I left my wife's 3GS unchanged, and she complained her battery was draining very fast, while mine only seemed to use about 1% more/hour than normal, much of which was probably trying to maintain a connection as we travelled through relatively unpopulated areas, and hilly terrain.  I was quite pleased by my battery life, in spite of the many pictures, and videos I took with the 4S.

Yes, some people have problems with bad batteries, or bad SIMs, or phantom processes, but most of these can be solved.

I am sure that if ALL the 40 million 4S phones sold had a real problem, it would on every front page of every newspaper from Biejing to New York City.

Still, .1% of 40,000,000 is a pretty large number. 40,000.

Get one of the utility programs that can display all the running processes.  It may be that you have a 'phantom process' running.  Do a 'hard reset' (instructions in manual), and see if that stops the process.

When I went into the Apple store to get my iPhone 4S replaced, they saw that if my usage and stand by times were too close that it was a bug. They told me that the cause of this was backing up my iPhone 4S from a iPhone 4 backup.

I'm aware that 3 months ago 5.0.1 version of iOS was released to address battery issues.

700+ pages here alone would suggest there is still an issue.

People keep posting that it will be fixed in 5.1 and that will be released in early March. I wish they'd check their facts before posting that twaddle. There is no definite release date for 5.1 and no mention anywhere that 5.1 contains any software fix for the horrendous battery life.

Best solution is still just to get a refund and buy something else. Some people get replacement iPhones from Apple stores, but as the stock they use to issue replacements is pre-owned reconditioned units, that ***** as an option.

By all means!  If you are dissatisfied with the product, then take it back, and get something else.  Warning, though, you may find that the new one isn't any better, and likely worse.  4G phones are notorious for... you guessed, it! ... Poor battery life.

It is quite possible, even likely, that some of the problems are caused by bad batches of batteries.  Things like that happen, all too often, in the tech field.  Everyone wants to buy the cheapest components, and some companies have less than ethical policies, and even those that are ethical, often get bad products from THEIR suppliers.

So guys should i take mine to the Apple Store for a replacement?

I have had my phone for about a month (upgrade) and the battery isnt that good like many have said.

I have everything turned off  and i only get about 8 hours when i use it constantly? I charge it every night so it hasnt effected me too much  but like most said i should be able to get 12 hours at least.

Not sure what to do tbh.
