Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

The following settings are found in Settings -  Location Services - System Services:

    Cell Network Search

    Compass Calibration

    Diagnostics & Usage

    Location-Based iAds

    Setting Time Zone

    Traffic

Cel Network Search, Compass Calibration, Location-Based iAds, what are these three settings for? do you turn them off to save battery life?

iOS 5.0.1 9A406 works fine on iPhone 4S. In fact it is iPhone 4S-only build.

While you are at it, do not restore from backup. Restore as new and sync back your data from iTunes or iCloud.

For me, this has completely resolved any battery issues. Now I easily get over 3 days of standby + few hours of use. Depending on your usage model, there might be few tweaks you need to make for better battery life -- all discussed earlier in the thread.

Oh!! I still think you should take it to an imagine store once....Mine drained 3 percent last night....over 9 hrs....Its not linear, sometimes it takes 3 hrs to drain 1 percent and sometimes it takes 2 hrs 15 mins but never less than 2 hrs 15mins....Both the cells i got had this stats....Well the first phone stood on 100 for 7hrs one night....That was amazing...Current phone after exchange takes about 3 hrs to 4 hrs to drain the one percent from hundred...then it constantly drains in about every 2 hrs or 3 hrs....

what are you phone settings? did you turn off any Notifications and Location Services? What about Fetch New Data?

    You can safely turn off

Cell Network Search - sends data back to Apple about quality of signal you get from cell towers at your location

Compas Calibration (if you don't use the electronic compass all the time, that is - most people don't even know it exists)

Diagnostics and Usage - sends data back to Apple

Location-Base iAds - shows ads tailored to your location

Traffic -- if you do not use it for navigation. Perhaps it is US-only service

Setting Time Zone -- if you do not travel across time zones all the time, turn it off. If you leave your time setting to automatic, then you will be getting your time from the network operator. This setting is only useful if: your network operator gies you bogus or no time service, or you are out of network coverage, cross time zones and must rely on the GPS for time zone information.

where can I access the Compass? I don't remember seeing it on my phone.

as for Location-Base-iAds, where do the ads appear on iphone?

I have everything turned off cos I have an wifi available all the time and for me, 3G comes under mobile data....I advice you not to use the exchange mail, instead downlaod gmail and yahoomail or even hotmail app and keep it logged in if you want updates....Fetch is set to manual and location services is turned off....I use it only when I am on GPS.....Just turn off Location Services, when an application needs it, it will prompt and you turn it on temporarily if you need. I will check how my mobile works with wifi turned on and everything set to automatic fetch....If your 3G is on, it will surely drain the battery like crazy....

Be sure to turn off Location Serveces>System Services (You'll find this at the bottom, slide down) and turn off Compass, iAds, Traffic, Time Zone, Diagnostic and Usage....

3G will run down the battery....And my old one was 9A406. After swapping I got 9A405 which is just a build of the phone....The difference is 406 comes with a fix for 'no sim' problem which hasnt been observed in india. They have updated the firmware band on 9A406....

Try activating one day's 3G package and check the battery....Somethings that you shouldnt worry about in 3G, the phone heats up like you can make an omlette on it but that shouldnt bother cos there is an inbuilt temprature sensor which will warn you if your phone is operating at higher than a safe temprature both for the phone and for you.

The second is while on 3G, there is a hissing sound under the apple logo at the back and while you are on the call which is nothing but the hardware working. They call it  static noise problem which is not cos its just the hardware working at its maximum limit.....and you will be losing about 1 percent every 3 minutes.....

Try and in case you are going, contact me, we both will try to fix the same time and meet there cos I need to take once. I lost about one percent every 4 mins on call....Isnt a good thing....

The Compass is in Utilities (usually on the second screen).

Ads appear in a number of third party applications.

Build 9A406 has new modem firmware, the sim issue is only one of the issues resolved.

You may want to use Reset Network settings. This usually resolves the 'getting hot' and 'fasr drain during calls' isses.

Since I restored my phone to 9A406 in iTunes, I have never seen any of these problems again. I never was able to observe the 'static noise' phenomenon anyway. Just dont' restore from backup -- restore as new and sync back your media and applications.

My phone sits on 3G (including cellular data) all the time, has VoIP application running in background (that is, keeps always on the Internet connection) and still manages to pass 3 days of standby.

If your 3G network is bad (many are) you may find you get much better battery life with iOS 5.1 where you can disable 3G completely, not just cellular data.

Oh! I never knew that it resolved the 'getting hot' issue on the phone....I was actually told it was not an issue which I believed because I knew there was sensor to keep phone in the optimum temprature and avoid any damage...Thanks for the solution.....Will let you know how it works....

Anyway, I was just wondering, did you actually say '3 Days standby while on 3G'....what usage do you get on an average....

so compass won't be accurate if I set "Compass Calibration" to off in System Services?

I did this before leaving for a trip.  Since returning, I charged the phone last night, and I now have 13hrs 45 minutes with 43 minutes usage (busy with other things), and the battery is at 88%.  Projecting this, I would get nearly 4 days standby.

When I went into the Apple store to get my iPhone 4S replaced, they saw that if my usage and stand by times were too close that it was a bug. They told me that the cause of this was backing up my iPhone 4S from a iPhone 4 backup.

When you think about it, that's rather like trying to drop the engine from your old car into your new one.  Probably not something you would want to do.  Reset settings and data, and resync, (not restore) from iTunes.  It should work better.

So guys should i take mine to the Apple Store for a replacement?

I have had my phone for about a month (upgrade) and the battery isnt that good like many have said.

I have everything turned off  and i only get about 8 hours when i use it constantly? I charge it every night so it hasnt effected me too much  but like most said i should be able to get 12 hours at least.

Not sure what to do tbh.

It depends on what you are doing with the phone.  If you are just making phone calls, this isn't good battery life.  If you are using GPS a lot, or playing 3D games, then it is great battery life.  Watching videos will also drain the battery if you are getting them online.

I still don't understand why my battery dies from being in sleep mode all the time. I left it over night, keep in mind, I had no apps running, no wi-fi, no 3G, just nothing running but the phone itself. I've done a full restore and still my battery is murdered just in stand-by. I went to bed with 100% battery and woke up with 68%. Doesn't make any sense.

Reset settings and data, then sync as new from iTunes.

The phone is normally in 3G mode, and does a LOT of things while you aren't doing anything, like checking for email, or checking to see if there are alarms, reminders, timers, and maintaining contact with the local cell tower so callers can find you.

What is not making sense to ME is the number of people who don't charge their phone while they sleep.  Then that 42% battery life you lost would be available to you when you woke up.
