Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Thanks a lot. Seems my 4S is better after the soft reset, complete drain and full charge. Now it is better than before. Still it drains around 10% overnight when Idle. I mean it went idle at 11 pm with 76% and in the morning 7 when I took back, it was around 66%. Do we see any big issue here in terms of battery drain?

    Time since last full charge

    Usage 3 Hours, 8 Minutes

    Standby 13 Hours, 7 Minutes

    Current battery level: 62%

So, you lost 10% in 8 hours.  If you project that, you would get about 80hours standby.  Not great, but you could still go 3 days without a charge.  BTW, charge at night while you sleep.

I did. Months ago. I just check back here every now and then to see if Apple have the courage to admit either a problem or misleading specifications.

    It would appear they don't.

Not sure what you mean about 4G - the iPhone 4S isn't 4G (even with the wildly varying definitions of 4G that different operators seem to have).

I mean that most of the other smartphones these days are some flavor of 4G,  and that most users complain that they can't get through a whole day on a charge.  Sound familiar?

When I sleep at 11pm my 4s battery 100% and woke-up by 5am my battery drop to 90%. After I came to work and at 12 noon, I got message, your baterry is low (20%). I dont have this problem on my 3Gs. Same scenario, my battery low only around 9pm or 10pm rather than 12noon on 4Gs.

Can someone from apple assist us, the loyal customer for apple like us.

    TQ.

Not sure where you got a 4Gs, as Apple doesn't make such a beast.  However, I do have two suggestions. If you seem to have a problem between 5AM and noon, consider what you are doing, and where you are, between those times.  Your answer may relate to your apps that are running during that time.  Also, you can start with 100% charge at 5AM if you leave the phone charging overnight....  Every little bit helps.

Sure, I should probably take it to the one in Forum. I am also thinking to give a final shot to update the latest build iOS 5.0.1 (9A406). My current version is 9A405 which is factory shipped. Does it create any issues? What is your current software version? The most shocking thing is that I haven't tried 3G on my phone yet. The statistics are only on 2G.

It might well help to update to 9A406 if you are on 2G.  However,  doing the update properly means resetting data and settings, then resyncing with iTunes. DO NOT RESTORE FROM AN OLD BACKUP .  This means you will need to do your settings all over again, set up the email, and move anything around of the screen(s) as you had them before as that will be lost.

    Real PITA.

The Compass is in Utilities (usually on the second screen).

so compass won't be accurate if I set "Compass Calibration" to off in System Services?

If you have to ask, you won't care.  Without getting too deep, calibration is used to set the compass to accurately point to either magnetic north, or a corrected north depending on where you are in the world.  It will, briefly use GPS to find out where you are, then enter an 'offset' to cause the compass to point to true north.

Unless you are into navigation, you won't care, and if you are, you already would know all this.

3G will run down the battery....And my old one was 9A406. After swapping I got 9A405 which is just a build of the phone....The difference is 406 comes with a fix for 'no sim' problem which hasnt been observed in india. They have updated the firmware band on 9A406....

Try activating one day's 3G package and check the battery....Somethings that you shouldnt worry about in 3G, the phone heats up like you can make an omlette on it but that shouldnt bother cos there is an inbuilt temprature sensor which will warn you if your phone is operating at higher than a safe temprature both for the phone and for you.

The second is while on 3G, there is a hissing sound under the apple logo at the back and while you are on the call which is nothing but the hardware working. They call it  static noise problem which is not cos its just the hardware working at its maximum limit.....and you will be losing about 1 percent every 3 minutes.....

Try and in case you are going, contact me, we both will try to fix the same time and meet there cos I need to take once. I lost about one percent every 4 mins on call....Isnt a good thing....

    Unreasonable expectation.

If you use 1% for each 4 minutes, that is 400 minutes (6.67 hours) of talk time.  The phone is rated for up to 8 hours, in what would be a 'best case' as if the cell were next door.  6.67 hours on 3G is great.  Note that you have to factor in anything else the phone might be doing also, such as 'standby' which includes any time the phone is not completely powered off.

Hey....I am talking about the 2G talktime but wait....If I have activated 3G, when I switch off 3G, I will be on the 2G network....

Just try and help me out here....In India, we get 3G as a value added package....We can activate it for a month or 3 months according to the package we need. Now, after then, the 3G gets deactivated if we wish not to continue with the service...Now, I thought, 3G on my phone is only for the data like internet and not for calls....So, everytime I make a call, the Mobile Data will be switched off which actually switches off 3G in my phone....Now I do not know whether it switches off 3G only for Mobile data and when I make my call, do I make it on 3G network or not....My network's Vodafone....

My guess is everytime I make a call, I am making it on 3G, that is why the above result.....I never thought about this....

I have a 4s that I got about a month ago. Recently, I noticed that it was running when the phone was locked. So after I unplug it from the charger, my standby time is the same as my usage time. However, I haven't even used it at all today!

Here are my statistics for today:

    Usage: 3 Hours, 0 Minutes

    Standby: 3 Hours, 0 Minutes

    Battery Percentage: 81%

I have tried resetting my settings, but it doesn't seem to be working...

The compass calibration is also used by the Maps application. I don't know what effect turning this off will be.

    You can safely turn off

Cell Network Search - sends data back to Apple about quality of signal you get from cell towers at your location

Compas Calibration (if you don't use the electronic compass all the time, that is - most people don't even know it exists)

Diagnostics and Usage - sends data back to Apple

Location-Base iAds - shows ads tailored to your location

Traffic -- if you do not use it for navigation. Perhaps it is US-only service

Setting Time Zone -- if you do not travel across time zones all the time, turn it off. If you leave your time setting to automatic, then you will be getting your time from the network operator. This setting is only useful if: your network operator gies you bogus or no time service, or you are out of network coverage, cross time zones and must rely on the GPS for time zone information.

Was your phone warm also? I've seen this happen, but I don't know the cause. You are not imagining this.

Do a soft reset with the home and the sleep button... That should terminate all the applications...

My phone does not seem to be really warm. Where I live the temperature is cold right now, so the phone is pretty cold to the touch.

Unless you have the beta of the 5.1 release, you don't have any way to switch off 3G on the iPhone 4S.  If your service provider shuts it off, then you will default to the next slower data level, and that would normally be 2G and what we call in the US 'Edge'.  It lacks the ability to handle voice and data at the same time, which I would really miss.  However, it seems to take less power as only one channel is active.  Turning off 'cellular data' should achieve the same benefit.

Your phone should display '3G' if you are indeed on 3G.  My phone is on 3G any time I am in an area where 3G service is available, EVEN WHEN ON Wi-FI.  Users should remember that many of these functions take place (and use battery power) simultaneously.

This is a common problem.  You should do the update to 9A406, and then resync (NOT RESTORE) to get your apps and other data back.  You will have to do all your settings over again.  PITA, but worth the effort.
