Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

The compass calibration is also used by the Maps application. I don't know what effect turning this off will be.

The compass calibration process uses the GPS to determine the correct correction values for the compass based on where GPS says you are, and displays the map so you can verify that position.  It only uses the GPS for the calibration operation, and to verify your location, so battery use should be minimal.  The calibration allows a 'true north' reading by compensating for the difference between the magnetic north pole and the pole determined by the earth's rotation, and this offset varies depending on your location.  All of which is important ONLY if you intend to use the compass for acutal navigation, such as in an aircraft.  Tramping through the woods on foot really doesn't need this kind of accuracy.

The 3G indicator on iPhone 4S shows when the phone is using 3G data (equivalent to Cellular Data before iOS 5.1). The same indicator displays the wifi graphics symbol when using WiFi for data.

There is no way to know currently, if you are connected to an 2G GSM network ot to 3G network. Perhaps the only way is if you use Cellular Data, do not have Wifi connected, then it will display 'E' (for EDGE).

Thanks for your help. My software version is already 9A406, and that I have done is to resync the device. Maybe it might work out. Maybe not. But the strange thing is, for the first two weeks of using this phone (already on 9A406), there wasn't this problem. Suddenly a week ago, this problem just started. And it didn't just start when I turned on my phone that day, but during the day instead. Any explanation for this?

Reset Network settings. That should help with that issue. Will just have to reconfigure any wifi networks you had stored. Otherwise other settings will remain.

    settings>general>reset>reset network

When out of 3G contact, my phone displays E, which is 2G.  Data rate is much slower, and you can't talk and access the internet at the same time.  If you see the 'E', then you ARE on 2G.  Don't know what it would display if you turned cellular data off while on 2G/Edge.

Possibly a 'hung process'.  That is an app that didn't end properly, and is still trying to do something it needs to do to end correctly.  A reset should flush it out.

It resets iPhone terminating any background application. It is something similar to what you do with a pin on an mp3 player by inserting the pin into the reset hole... You'll know if you have had an mp3 player apart from iPod with you... Basically terminates any application including that are not accessible by the user...

This is what I mentioned already. If you don't use Cellular Data there is no indicator if you use 2G or 3G GSM.

Most networks should charge the same for 2G/3G voice, but offer different plan if you want 3G (usually they give you a different SIM card then). Cellular Data -- 2G or 3G is entirely different thing.

    Hi Scarface,

I purchased Iphone 4s a week ago thinking that the battery back-up would be gud. But, I need to get it charged every day.....Also, application use by me is not so much. Is there some kind of fix required or should I carry the charger everywhere I move.

    Thanks.

Was your phone warm also? I've seen this happen, but I don't know the cause. You are not imagining this.

One thing that will warm the phone (and hit the battery charge hard) is constant use of the GPS chip.  If the GPS indicator in the status bar is purple, then it is on all the time, and the phone will get warm.  Since the time for playing 3D games is even less than the rated time for GPS use, I rather suspect that would also warm it up.  If you use a case, it may make this heating hard to notice.

You don't give us much to go on here.  Have you looked through the messages, and tried the battery saving procedures listed?  Is your usage time and standby time the same?  What do you do on the phone when you are using it?

I've noticed that some apps use one or more location services, even if the app is in the background. Some apps should be able to do this, but others, like Facebook, probably should not. Today I noticed that Facebook will use the Traffic system service every time I want to make post. Facebook has it's own location service I don't understand why it needs to use the traffic service. When it does it probably should not continue to use it in the background.

I've seen other issues with the traffic service too. I would expect the Maps app to use this service, but I've seen the traffic service continue to be used, even if I close the Maps app in the multitasking bar. I've had to manually toggle the services state (on-off-on).

I found the fix to the battery drain problem. What's draining the battery, at least on the 4s, is when you open an app or anything on your iPhone and close it, it is still running in the background sucking the battery life.  You need to close out what is running in the background and to do this, you double tap the device button and you will see your desktop change and at the bottom you will see the apps that are still running.  Press on one of the apps and hold it until you see a red circle with a minus sign in it.  Tap the red circle and it will close.  Close all these running apps and I guarantee you that your battery life will increase bigtime.  You have to close apps everytime you use them so they don't run in the background.

Sorry, but that "Fix" as you call it has been debated here like a trillion times for those who have real draining problems, that doesn't fix anything...
