Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Hey,

Do a soft reset....It will come back to normal....I have experienced that....

Anyway, I made another observation. I have a Vodafone and at my home, I have some signal issues. These days I watch tv at night and fall asleep in the living room and wherever I am, I will have 4S with me. In the living room, the signal usually keeps fluctuating between 3 bars to 1 bar and sometimes loses the signal.

In bedroom, the signal is maximum....When I am in my living room, the phone loses nearly 1 percent every hour while I crash in my bedroom sometimes, the phones standby drain is around .3 to .5 percent per hour....

This is something that I observed recently.....

Hi this is an updated report : I just had a guy from my cellular carrier in my office (VIP service) he replaced the phone ( 4S) with no argument/ I told him I know of the drainers like SIRI Push and Location Services but these are the reasons why I bought the phone in the 1st place.... Will see how it works now. He also told me about the upcoming 5.1 upgrade but did not have any information what we can expect

    Thanks for sharing.

To me the best article on resolving the battery problem seems to be this:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/163200/2011/10/troubleshoot_iphone4s_battery.htm l

In any case the reason for a depleted battery is increased activity of my iPhone.

(I can actually feel the heat of the phone.)

I don't think switching everything off - apart from what is recommended here:

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

    will do the trick.

Okay, some people challanged my screenshot awhile ago, because I had connected my phone to the laptop (to retrieve the photo in progress) during the CELLULAR DATA OFF test.

I finally got the nerves to retry my test and NOT use any cellular data for the maximum life of a battery cycle.

    Here it is.

With 3G on - approx 20 hours total lifetime before a charge is needed.

    IN THE CURRENT TEST BELOW

    1. Cellular Data is OFF

    2. Location Serv. is OFF

    3. WIFI has been used occasionally (total of 30 minutes?)

    4. Average phone calls and sms, not avoiding calls to achieve better battery and not talking 2 hours with wife either

    5. I've used the camera to take approx 5 minutes of HD Video footage and about 15 HD photos (And that stuff drains!)

    IMG_0150[1].PNG

I recone with those 3% I could do another 2 hours in standby, but I wont risk losing the battery entirely and then get smacked again that I "faked" a battery life by keeping it plugged

By the way, when I use 3G, my phone becomes very hot in a matter of seconds or a minute.

    Recently i bought a white iPhone 4S 16GB with iOS 5.0.1 preinstalled.

The phone was running fine for the first week, untill on the 10th day it started giving battery problems. I had turned on siri, puch notifications, locations services, icloud, 3 email accounts, brightness at 50 %. I used to get battery backup of only 12-14 hours with moderate use. 16 though on lite use. heavy use would kill the phone by 8 hours.

Then i browsed the web for sollution, and i got my problem solved. What i did was :

    1. Restored the phone to factory settings by selecting " Reset All Content and Settings "

    2. After the restore i set it up as a new phone in iTunes.

    3. Then i calibrated the battery by fully charging it to 100% and completely draining it untill the phone shut down due to low battery, then i did full recharge again for around 4 hours( my phone showed full charge at 2 hours, but still I charged it for 4 hours).

    4. After that i transfered my music, apps, videos, etc

    5. I turned off location services ( Main thing responsible for iPhone4S battery drain)

    6. Turnned off siri (Siri eats a huge amount of battery while your are using it. And when you are not, it increases the cpu processing to an extent enough to decrease battery life fast)

    7. Brightness set to 50% ( Auto-Brightness disabled )

    8. Disabled automatic sending of Diagnostics & Usage to Apple in settings.

    9. Turned off iCloud. (in my case iCloud eats a lot of battery, even crashed 2 times before)

    10. Now the email setup. try to setup as least email accounts as possible, disasble the push notifications, and set update interval to 'manual'. setting up more email accounts sometimes leads to problems in mail app, failing it to properly sync and donwload emails in your phone, causing a bug in background. and the mail app will constantly trigger the process to sync email even though it is not really synchronize. this constantly triggering of mail process eats battery life.

    11. While setting up email, after singing in, select only to sync 'emails', do not select calender, notes, contacts, etc. Its better you sync your contacts, calender, notes, etc with your PC/MAC via iTunes.

    12. WiFi and Bluetooth turned off. Only turning on when using them.

    13. If you use Facebook app, disable push notifications (optional, your choice)

And finally my battery life is awesome now, around 1.5 days of moderate use, heavy use last full 1 day.

    Hope this helps.

And remember, if this does not help, then it is 100% sure that you have a faulty battery, so go to apple store and have a replacement.

    Thank you.

Sorry to tell you but it's not a SOLUTION but CRUTCH.

You may reach much more life time if you will not switch on your iPhone at all.

Form my 5 iPhones 4 was with normal batteries and they work up to 2 days with many things ON (at least WiFi always on, auto brightnes which is very clever and usefull, iCloud and location services).

So, trying to bring to life defective devices is not a SOLUTION.

Or do what I'm about to do  -- Give up after a week of shenanigans, return the phone for a new one (hoping the new device works right), and let apple deal with it.  Returning the hardware is apparently the only way to send them a message.

well who cares. i dont care, because now i get 1.5 days with normal use, sumtimes even more. and i only make calls, sms a lot, browse internet via 3g, take pictures and videos, but gaming only sumtimes. so 1.5 day is awesome for me.

yes ... same problem . I got an unlocked 32GB iphone 4S 4 days back and I have to re-charge it to 100% atleast once in a day without using much ... The battery life of iphone-4S is so poor.

Sure, I am certain we all understand that, but it doesn't make the phone very useful, does it?

Just because some users have a problem does NOT mean their phones are defective  Many users have found the solution in these procedures.  You found that 80% of them don't have a problem.  Doesn't mean the other one is defective, only that it MAY be, and doesn't bear on what others may be experiencing at all.

Suggest you check out the procedures outlined in earlier messages, and see if they help.  If not, then you can take up the matter with the place where you purchased it.

This indicates that for some reason, your cell radio system is taking a LOT more battery power than it should.  You might try resetting your network settings, and if that doesn't help go to your carrier and see if they have your 3G provisioned correctly.  It is normal for the phone to use a bit more power when you are in a fringe reception area, or when you are traveling between cells, but not THAT much.

I use GPS from time to time. It's not GPS circuit who eats battery - the application which is using GPS could drain. For instance when notification set to location it uses GPS constantly, but for me it means nothing, as usual 0.2-0.5% discharge per hour of standby.

Actually, notification only checks about once a minute, BUT if you aren't careful to end the process after you get the notification, EVEN if you clear it, then it keeps using the GPS.  That's a bug I hope 5.1 squashes.
