Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Another weird thing happend that happend this morning; i took my phone from charge, it drops %0,5 - 1 percent per minute all the way down from 100 percent to 95 with 8 minutes of constant phantom usage after i put the phone in to charge again, i let the phone charge it self, after 2 percents charge, i took the phone from charge drain was gone phone held at %98 and i killed all the apps to be sure. Under heavy usage (3d/2d gaming+ wifi browse +bluetooth 3.0) with everything now standby time: 8h usage: 3h 12m holding at %37

my iphone default battery meter shows its 100% charged in status bar, with the full charged symbol ( no lighting symbol)

but my itunes still show that the phone is still charging and have not yet reached 100%.

a system app (downloaded from app store) also shows the same. here is the picture.

ClayG - no he didn't, about that you are right. But for him to complaint, I assume that he didn't use the phone.

My iPhone, as we speak, haas been in standby for 28minutes and already shows 20minutes of usage time - bettery % is 98%...

Yesterday, the phone lasted (about) 23hours and showed an amazing 17hours of usage time (eventhough I've used it only for about 1hour/ 1h and a half - few phone calls, 2 text messages and maybe 20minutes of web surginf on 3G)!

WOW, my iPhone lasts 23hours if I use it for 17hours straight.........

There is something really wrong with this, and no matter what I do, I can't stop it!

I'm waiting for the 5.1 before returning it to the store...

Download an app like System Status and check the processes list for processes that are running, and compare them to someone who doesn't have this phantom usage problem.  Chances are good that will lead to the cause.

Exactly! I haven't used my phone at all. Eveything is off, location services, brightness at 20%, no background apps running, no notifications, icloud off except "Find my iPhone", and I lost over 10% overnight (6 hours of standy). As soon as I started using it it went down an additional 10%. I'm under 50% now and it just keeps going down really fast.

Something I've noticed, I have push off on my email, it is supposed to fetch every hour, but the thing stills works as it push is activated. I test it thoroughly and email is still immediatly pushed! Anybody else experiencing this?

Use Manual setting to see if this stops.

Yeah, manual seems to work, but as soon as I change it back to an hourly fetch it immediately starts fetching.

I had all iphone models so far.....The 4S I found to just need more setting tweeking..... everything ***** juice on this beast. Great phone but i found the main power sucker source was one of Siri's functions; "Raise to Speak". I was told there is a sensor alllllllways on standby if you have that flicked to "on". with that on..... my power drained to 40% by mid-day. Flick that off,  and from this morning to early afternoon (same useage - listening to music most of the day) my battery's at 86%.

So.... turning off Siri's "raise to speak" function and also.... auto lock to a lesser time (1-3 mins) will help your battery life. I had it at 5 mins before.....the sceen ***** alot of power as well.

    Hope it helps!

If you don't turn the phone off (after you disabled the Speak to raise option), the sensor will continue to work. You have to turn off the phone and turn it on again to completely shut off the sensor.

rphunte - already bought System Status, now I need someone to do the comparison ...

OK,  there are 5 screens of processes listed on my phone.  Make sure to clear all your entries on the multi-tasking status bar, then run system status, and check 'processes'.  You shouldn't have more than about 30 items listed.  If you have any app you recognize other than system status, there it is probably not supposed to be active.  Also, check the run times for things that have been running all the time since you restarted the phone to see if there is something you recognize from your apps.

    - MobileMail is running for 7hours (I find that strange because I have set it to Manual and turned off Push);

    - apsd, BTserver, aggregated, fairplay.N94,lapd, imagent, mediaremoted, mediaserved, ubd, springboard, fseventsd, wifid, locationd, powerd, lockdownd, syslog, configd, notifyd, UserEventAgent, lauchd, Kernel_task, mDNSResponder and CommCenter are running for 10hours and 48m (that's the usage time that the counter shows);

    - networkd is running for 8hours and 19m.

Today is even worst than yesterday! 13hours and 25m of waiting time, 10hours and 42m of usage time (NOT REAL), battery down to 37%!!!

    God help me! lol

Ok, here are some really ****** results:

As you all can see, this stupid can't even last 12 hours on standby. A friend of mine actually has a Usage of 3 hours, Standby on 4 hours, and battery level at 77%. Now THAT is good battery life.

    Good day!

I want to share my experience regarding this issue. It's really frustrating and disappointing for me to go through this experience with iPhone 4S.

I was looking forward to have this phone since this was launched last year. I thought that this phone will really satisfy me since my wife has iPhone 3GS and my siblings have iPhone 4. All of them have really great time using the phone and very proud iPhone users.

Upon having my iPhone 4S i do not have any battery problems at first. So I started uploading music, apps, and even my contacts. Suddenly, after four days of using, the battery started to drain like crazy. Like most people, I also experienced 10-15% battery drop in an hour. I tried everything to check the problem (from deleting all apps and files, setting off all settings, restoring from iTunes, and even not using the phone). Still, the battery drops like crazy. So, I replaced my phone at the store.

When I had my replacement phone, I am now aware of the battery drop issue. So, I monitor the battery every now and then with very minimal usage and all settings off. Somehow, the battery drop decreased from 10-15% to around 8-10% per hour. But, a new problem occured. I cannot received any incoming calls and texts!!. And when it happens, the battery drops again to 10-15% per hour. I checked with the network provider, and no problems with the network. I changed the SIM card, and still the problem occurs.

Now, I am replacing the phone to the store, and hoping for the third time, the phone will now be OK.

I am expecting that iPhone 4S will deliver to its capabilities and somehow match with the previous iPhones. This is the first time I had my iPhone (i was a Nokia phone user). I am not expecting these problems to occur and for Apple not to do something about this and resolve this soon. This is so frustrating and disappointing for Apple not to provide any info or solution to this problem, and yet they are now focusing of launching of new iPad 3 and iPhone 5. They let their customers (iPhone 4S users) to figure out ways to resolve this problem. For me, Apple must acknowledge this issue VERY SOON! They should consider recalling the phones (since I dont think this is only software related), and resolve this before they start launching new phones.

Ok, so I just restored from itunes, setup the phone as "new" and have absolutely nothing installed. No location services, apps, nada. I'll see how it handles everything tomorrow.

"The Genuis at the Apple store said I could get a replacement handset or try a battery change first. I opted for the battery"

Don't know why he would have said that as Apple stores do not change batteries in iPhones.

EVERYBODY I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION THAT COULD HELP YOUR BATTERY!!!

    FIRSTLY GO TO

SETTING- LOCATION SERVICES- GO DOWN THE BOTTOM AND HIT SYSTEM SERVICES

THEN TURN OFF SETTING TIME ZONE!

If you do these steps you battery might be getting better over time.... ive done this and ive got 23% and its 42 hours standby and 32 hours Usage soo its worked for me.... I'l explain why this works... If that is one (Setting time zone) then it checks the time zone every 1 hour or so and it takes up HEAPS of battery power..... So once u turn it off it might not start straight away but after 1 week or so it should start to kick in.....

Hi I have the same problem and after reading your post I did some tests myself and found out that you are correct. When the phones temperature (I use BatteryInfoLite from Cydia) is below 30degrees I have a lot of Phantom Usage I do not know what I can do. My phone was working fine for 2 months and then something happed and started to show phanom usage. I haven't tried to restore it yet as from what I read here will not help but I do not know what to do.
