Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

How many charge cycles did you battery have? These lithium-ion batteries do not have their full capacity during the first several charges -- so unfortunately, for a brand new phone the 'battery life' experience will be always poor.

Once upon a time, there was a warning to this effect in about every mobile device's user guide. Guess someone has decided chemistry laws changed overnight...

By the way, you may have location services ON and some application may be using those all the time. By default iPhone 4S has a lot of these enabled, most of which have absolutely no use to you. You may wish to enable the GPS usage indicator (Settings->Location Services->System Services->Status Bar Icon).

If this is on most of the time, you need to find out which application is abusing your phone.

While you are there, you may just disable all "System Services" -- chances are you need none of them and they do chew quite a lot of your battery.

Mine is currently at 76%, with 20 hours, 37 minutes standby and 2 hours usage. Everything on, except these System Services and Raise to Speak to Siri. (I don't use Siri, but it's on as well) I also have fetch e-mail every 15 minutes. With time I am 'abusing' it more and more and it stays on longer after each new charge...

Because  nature of the bug , i bellive it is software related .. any one else had exprience this error?? i guess we have to carry laptop and itunes with us :=)

If you must charge the iPhone while on the go, you will be better with one of those cases with integrated battery, or an external portable battery charger. That would be much less to carry than a laptop.

I always keep my phone under my pillow after charging it to 100.

Besides what was already mentioned, that under your pillow the phone will have poor signal reception and  will use more battery power to communicate --- it is extremely bad idea to sleep over something that emits electromagnetic fields and radio waves in this case.

Modern mobile phones have 1-2W EIRP emission and many people try very hard to keep these things away from their bory and especially their head, by using bluetooth headsets (1-10mW EIRP) at all times.

Mate i already have :=) but it is useless! charging won't help the phantom usage and battery drain nor killing apps in task bar!. Only thing that helps is connect to the pc with itunes

You should try toggling iMessage off and on.

I read the posts in this thread and one day I had it in my pocket I saw that I had nearly no phantom usage. After a few test I found out that when my phone/battery is above 30 degrees I have no phantom usage. Strange isn't it?

do you have the same problem? In which carrier you are and what iOS versions you are running?

    I have Vodafone, and IOS 5.0.1 (406)

I do not understand the relation with itunes and imessage.. my phone is always everything on mode ex. bluetooth. battery holding in acceptable rates and i do not have any phantom but when i did a full charge and disconnect  battery drops like crazy with heavy phantom. the day before i even saw 1 percent drop in 2 minutes. only solution is connect to itunes let her charge for few percents, by doing this my battery drain slows down to 1 or 2 percent per hour..  what is the logic on this??

    I have vodafone c3 serial 2011 week 45 ios ver. 405

My carrier is Cosmote.I think I had the problem for half a day after I upgraded to 5.0.1 OTA ,when I went to sleep and saw a decrease in battery about 15-20% or more  in 6h.If you search into this discussion you will find that  I've  explained what I did exactly (following davidch instructions).I do not remember the phone getting hot.I restored as new and I have no problem since (more than 3 months) except a couple of times when I noticed a faster drain of battery (just restarted the phone and the problem has gone).I have to say that the reception is far better than the iP4.I can confirm that because I fly very often.Sometimes I have signal in high altitudes(15-20K ft).But because the phone tries to maintain the signal, the battery goes down fast (faster than iP4 under same conditions).

Everything is enabled, except Siri raise to sleep.BT occasionally,no push just manual email and brightness 1/3 and auto.I saw an improvement when I disabled contacts, calendars and reminders of Gmail(exchange) and Hotmail acccounts which I do not actually use.Icloud's features are all enabled. Also I disabled the App store auto downloads for both apps and books and wifi sync with my mac (I noticed that the 2nd one especially is a battery drainer even if I do not transfer anything between them).I also noticed that mail app fetches even if it is set to manual.I think that many settings do not actually work until you reboot the phone (ex raise to speak) which is a bug that I have never seen in iOS before. Finally when under wifi if I disable the cellular data I noticed that the battery life improves (I have not confirmed that but other noticed the same also).

In general ,compared to my ex iP4 (fantastic battery life compared to 3gs) this one has worse battery life and I am not so sure that I need and feel the extra speed. But without using GPS (turn by turn directions),no 3d games and no location based reminders(the most sneakiest battery drainer) you can get 1 day of usage which is the point (I think).I usully get 5-6 hours usage (including 1/2 h Nike+ gps app which takes 6-8%) and 22-24h stby.I do not remember iP4 battery life exactly. It was better but not SO much better ,assuming the fact that I had always 3G disabled.I have to wait for 5.1 for iP4S to have this option. I think it will lessen the energy gap between the 2 phones. For me at least.

So should we wait until Apple releases the iOS 5.1 (probably next week with the iPad) or just try to exchange the phone right now? This battery question is always doubtful... :/

iMessage does polling to see if contacts are iMessage enabled or not. This is done to determine whether to use the iMessage or SMS protocol and to let you know which one pull be using before you type. This process can sometimes get stuck and cause excessive battery drain.

Wait until the next iOS update and see if that fixes your issue before getting a replacement. In the meantime, if ou haven't yet done a complete restore to factory defaults, followed by a restore as a new phone (not from a backup), you should try that before taking any additional steps.

Looks like you are attached to wifi.   I have the same good results when on wifi and my battery drop s very quickly when on a 3G data connection.   This is why I believe the problem is 100% related to how iOS5 manages 3G data and the dual antenna system in the 4s

I have an iPhone 4s from Spain bougthed in November.

Since first days my thougt was about it has a bad battery, but after my SonyEricson W910 every phone have a bad battery... despite that, an Smartphone has to drain more battery because the big screen, wifi, mail, games, apps...

But the iPhone it's 700€ so I`m feeling cheated.

Depending of the use battery drains more or less, right, but it's dissapointing  this quality.

After trying some workarounds,  lack the great choice resseting items & restoring as a new iPhone, but sometime ago I found a better performance, so not done yet.

One of the worst thing was Alarm Clock Apps, they runs the whole night just to wake u with your iPod music, but they drains the battery absoluttly.

Once I've delete the app the bat becomes extremely better.

Even that, with better CPU and 8Mpx they should add extra battery power...

Actually this is my Batt %

    No Games

    No Music

    Just:

    Some very short Calls

    Some Wasap

    Some Text Msg

    One Photo

    One ScreenShot

    No Browsing
