Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    I'll give smudge.io's fix a shot tonight.

Allow me to add my story of woe to the previous 743 pages of same. I'm very much in line with with 1Storm's account; there appear to be various things oging on here, and various potential fixes, some of which work, some of which don't.

I'm a new iPhone owner, got a 4s in mid-January. Love the phone; despise what - for me - seems like a software glitch that causes it to suck battery power to the tune of an entire charge in about a day.

I am a very light user of the 4s's capabilities; I never have cellular data turned on; don't play games; rarely make calls; only text on occasion. Thus far, I haven't even put any music on the phone. I love the camera, and have several apps I use in conjunction with it. I am very careful (actually, have become quite obsessive) about shutting off apps so that they're not rtunning in the background. Bluetooth - OFF. Location Services - OFF.

Initially, my battery usage seemed ok, but after a few weeks The Battery Issue arrrived, and I began to look more deeply into how my phone was using power. After shutting down everything possible, deleting apps, etc., I was left with one clear indication that the phone was simply not operating correctly: My Usage and Standby times were always 100% equal; there was no variation whatsoever. The phone appeared to go to sleep, with no apps running, say for 8 hours overnight, but would show 8 hours of standby/usage time the next morning, and around 25-30% battery drainage.

A factory re-set fixed the problem...for about 5 days. Five bissful days, in which my usage stats were exactly what they should have been based upon my pawltry usage; my initial full charge lasted four days. My second full charge lasted a little over two, however, and sometime during that stretch, the Usage=Standby Time problem re-emerged. I took the phone to an Apple store, they replaced the battery. I took it back the next day when (no surprise at all) the "new" battery (it wasn't new, and actualy drained faster that the original one) didn't fix the problem.

Apple gave me a new phone, which (again) worked fine for about a week. During the last couple of days, the battery started draining rapidly, and (again) the phone started showing the same old Usage=Standby Time problem.

But with a twist! Now (the past two days), at some point during the drain-down cycle, the Usage and Standby numbers disappear completely. The new pattern appears to be: I'll charge to 100%; watch as the battery drains down rapidly, with the Usage and Standby Times in lockstep; then, while the battery continues to drain, notice that those Times are replaced with two horizontal bars.

As I said, I'll try and above fix, and as I'm well inside the warrantee period, I won't bail on the iPhone quite yet. But, at present, the 4s (or this new operating system) has some sort of major flaw, or flaws. It's a dysfunctional product for me. As much as I like the phone, otherwise, I will return it and move to something else (hello Android) if Apple isn't able to correct this problem.

After 744 pages, one would think that any reasonable person would have come to the conclusion that there is NO miracle "fix" for the current version of 4s & iOS5.    I stopped toying and fiddling with the phone long ago and am dealing with daily charging as required.   Maybe iOS 5.1 will improve the situation and maybe it won't.   I'm going to wait and see.   If nothing changes, I'll be waiting for iPhone 5 to release this fall, but won't buy in until it's proven that the phone is more bug-free than the 4s......

So, this is an update to my post on page 743 of the thread. The draining to zero and charging to 100% has done nothing to correct the situation. I suspected it wouldn't but at least now I can say I tried. If fact, the issue seems to be getting worse. Last night when I got home I syched the phone to iTunes, did a backup to the computer and iCloud. I also put it on the charger and took it to 100%. I unplugged it from the charger and powered the phone off at 2100. This morning at 0700 I powered the phone on and the battery was at 53%.

I made two calls, one to voicemail and one regular call both of which were no more than a minute and a half and the battery dropped to 47%.

By the time I made my 20 minute drive to work the batery was at 37% and I put it back on the charger. Today I'm heading to Verizon Wireless for another phone as I am still well within the warranty period. At this point, if the issue isn't addressed by Apple soon I'll consider getting rid of the phone and moving to an Android. I hope I don't have to go this route but at this point the phone and its many useful features is basically useless.

I didn't send it to the Apple Techs because I'm also convinced this is (mostly) software related.

So, as 5.1 is to be released in the next few days, I'll wait a little bit more and see if it fixes anything (or not). If it doesn't, 4S, up you go!!

But I'll stick with Apple because SGSII is just TOOOOOOOOO big for me...if I continue to have problems, maybe I'll sell it and return to a more "basic" phone...

so i downloaded this app called " Battery Boctor " which is free at appstore and its download size is about 8.3 MB

when i opened this app in my iphone, it was written " please open battery doctor while charging ", so i opened it and charged my phone, then it showed me total time left for compete charge.

SCREENSHOT OF APP (NOTE : THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN DAY BEFORE YESTERDAY) :

    IMG_0049.PNG

then i thought maybe i would calibrate my battery once more with this app, beacuse last time i calibrated 4 times but didn't give good results. BUT THIS APP DEFINITELY HELPED ME TO CALIBRATE MY BATTERY CORRECTLY 100%.

so i opened this app and charged my phone till total 100%, then completely ran down to 0%, till the phone shutdown itself due to low battery.

now i charged by phone, and when it powered on after sometime, i opened battery doctor again, and let it charge till 100%. Total charge took around 3 hour 30 minutes(wall charger, not PC) from Fast Charging to Continuation to Trickle Charging.

after that i used my phone as Normal with calls, sms, browsing, wifi, checking mails and some music through headphones. (note : location services and siri are turned off ), and woooooow battery life improved greatly. here it is :

    AT MORNING :

I SUGGEST ALL OF YOU TO TRY THIS APP

Try to keep the phone heated (in your poket) for some time and check your phantom usage. Mine when the temperature is above30 degrees I have no phantom usage

Some users say that when they have same stand by and usage time, there is an MMS waiting to be received. In order to receive this MMS you have to trun your DATA (3g) on for some time.. try it.

I want to ask you guys something I'm not sure about. A lot of people are saying the Battery Bug could be from a previous backup with iCloud. In the many restores I did ONLY (and ONLY) used iCloud to bring back my contacts in the phone, nothing else. Could just that bring corrupt files or settings that are affecting the battery or can I be ok with that? I know there's a way to backup all your iPhone stuff to your computer OR to your iCloud account, but in my restores I have never brought back any backup from anywhere, just setting the phone as a new one. I hope this doesn't affect the battery because it's not pratical to register all my contats on the phone manually, since they are too many. Thanks in advance!

There is no problem with syncing your iPhone to either iCloud or iTunes. The problem with old (and possibly wrong) settings is usually only with 'backup' -- that will copy back all the settings from that backup, which is created by older version of the iOS.

Even if you do restore from backup, you can still use General->Reset->Reset All Settings to clean up any such mess. This 'reset' will reset only the OS settings -- all your applications, data and applications settings will remain.
