Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I ran my app called battery doctor, then went to monitor, there i saw some processes running in the background, i thought maybe this is one of the causes of my poor battery life, is it possible? and is this processes normal? i don't understand what are those processes, and as you can see, there are no other apps running in my background when i doubled click my home button.

can you guys please check yours? use monitor and try to check if you also have this kind of process running in your backgrounds?

i've noticed few apps has been running for almost 1 day, i can't help myself to think this is the cause..

It is normal to have many processes running in the background.  These processes do things like monitor wi-fi, check to see if you have email, wait for timers to elapse, check periodically for your appointments, keep your screen refreshed, check to see if you have pressed the home or sleep buttons, keep track of data coming and going through the cellular, and wi-fi networks, and many other processes that make the phone a 'smartphone'.  The only process you show that is NOT on my phone (that doesn't have a battery problem) is the fairplayd.n94 app.

Another user mentioned that an mms message could be pending, and I have had text messaging blocked from the beginning, although I still get messages from ATT, somehow.  Was wondering if others have noticed any relation between text messaging and battery drain.

The only relationship I see to battery drain is being attached to 3G data and not wifi............

Correction.  I looked just now, and I do have the fairplayd.N94 process now.  Anyone have any idea what that does?

I am curious.  I checked my ATT data charges today and found that something is using 3G data even though my phone is connected to wi-fi all the time.  I have noticed that the wi-fi connection is dropped when the phone is in 'sleep  mode', so I suspect something is happening while the phone is in sleep mode, such as at night, that seems to send data between 23:45 and 00:15 every day.  It's only a few megabytes, at most, but this seems to be a bug to me to use 3G when wi-fi is available.

Re: the draining battery due to an incoming text message (or something similar), um, no.

Look, first, there usually isn't something waiting to load when I check, plus, I have all push settings disabled on the phone; it doesn't check to see if I have a message (of any sort) pending until I specifically ask it to.

Second, in my instance, I have Usage and Standby times that are exactty equal; I don't always have some pending message that's causing my phone to be, in essence, ON all the time.

Third, my fiancee bought her 4s at the same time I got mine. She uses it like, well, a normal smart phone, and similar to how I'd use mine...if mine worked properly; no bluetooth, but uses push mail, location services are on, texts and makes calls a lot more than I do since she doesn't share my antisocial tendancies. Her phone works fine; she's not had any of the battery-related issues I have.

Because I saw this in another thread, and because I have nothing better to do as I watch my battery drain, I deleted the Microsoft Exchange account I have on my phone (work-related; it's only used for e-mail). No surpsirse that it didn't do diddly.

By the way, I've never noticed my phone getting warm/hot, as some others have reported.

Thank you very much for clarifying me that!

Actually, since I've got my replacement phone (around 3 weeks) it showed poor battery life, and then I have already done the restore (as so as set it up as a new phone) and reset the OS settings one time each, and unfortunately neither of them solved the problem. I have read tons of topics about this problem on this Apple Forum and tried a lot of things with the iPhone looking for a solution but there seems to be no other way but waiting for the new version of the iOS. Thanks again for the help!

That is obviously not the case.

I restored an existing backup when I was at the Genius Bar, as I had lots of stuff I didn't want to lose.

The guy at the Genius Bar walked me through doing a clean install, and I didn't do it until the next day when it was proven the issue wasn't fixed.

I did the clean firmware install at home, on my laptop.

Thanks.  Another process that has NO use for me as ALL the music I have on my phone was ripped from MY store-bought CDs.  It is annoying that many processes seem to be running that the user can't shut off, even if he has no need for the function.  Even with bluetooth turned off, the bluetooth driver is loaded.

You can't really turn off all the push functions.  You will still get imessages when they come in, unless you turn it off.  And some other things seem to happen even if you have disabled the function.  For instance, I have text messaging turned off (except for iMessage), and I still get text messages from ATT.

I am beginning to side with those who think that the phantom usage is related to something to do with 3G, and the way it is implemented by each individual cell.  If I go to WalMart (not my normal cell), my battery drains much faster.  If this is the case, it may not be possible to Apple to fix it with software, or it may.  As I understand it, 5.1 does have some fixes for 3G problems.  We shall see.

While I share your frustration, the phone's capacities should be such that having this stuff humming away in the background doesn't really affect performance. And I'd doubt that its related to the whole battery diaster. fact is, on those fleeting occasions when my phone has operated correctly, I've been very satisfied with battery life; I assume all of these programs were operating then, too. Something else (or more than one somethnig else) is going on.  Maybe the OS update will fix it. But columns like this:

don't instill a lot of confidence in that regard.
