Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Hah yea you are right! I just love my ipad so much that I wanted my iPhone to be the same.

I guess I'm going to see how it goes today, and look at my usage tonight to make sure everything is running properly.  I appreciate your time with this!  I know this thread has gone on for a while now, so I hope the new 5.1 has helped a lot of people.  Or else Apple is really going to hear from us!

I'm going to turn off icloud because I don't think I actually need it.

iPad has a lot of boot space to tuck in a huge battery. There are other phones which have 4.3 inches screen and does not last half as long as iPhone 4S does. Let alone 4S, they do not perform upto 50% of their specifications while my phone has been promisingly giving me 90% of specs and sometimes may be more.

Smartphones are just like a laptop but only smaller, but you still cannot ask an iPhone's battery to be as good as an iPad. They do a great deal of work being so minute. And since there are iPhones that work as good as specs, you cannot complain about iPhone 4S. You can only complain about the unit you have got.

I agree - and I'm not complaining about the phone itself, because it is truly the best phone I have ever owned!  I went from a flip phone, to a blackberry, to android.  From day 1, my old mytouch 4G had an awful battery, and I never cared to truly look into it because I figured oh well, it's a smartphone, it makes sense.  In the two years I had that phone, I never once went through a full day without having to charge it.

So, OF COURSE I love the iPhone, and I still think the battery is decent because I still get to use the phone until I go to bed, and don't limit myself (I play games, check email, twitter, facebook, pinterest, instagram), and I listen to spotify every day for about 1h30 while working out.

I think the issue is that with Apple products, we just tend to have such high expectations.

And that's ok to have high expectations. It's the unrealistic expectations that are dangerous

    Hope I've somehow helped you.

    Post your reults!

In the meantime, my iPhone is still going STRONG! 7h43m, 8 minutes usage time - 98%. Looks good so far...

I did want to say that I did the soft/smart reset (holding home and lock buttons) and my battery went back to 100% and it's been like that for over an hour!!!

Let it drain totally until it cuts off, then plug in and let it fully charge (like at least 1 to 2 hrs after it reaches 100%). If you have already let it cut off then try a restore from itunes.

My 4s will not hold a charge and seems to not charge past 20% now. It was fine until 2 days ago, then suddenly it won't take a charge at all, or go past 20% at least.

I have not run the lastest update. Planning on it tonight.

This is very frustrating, I have turned off bluetooth and wifi.

    Thoughts or help??

    Thanks

you should try shutting off your apps that are running in the background. double tap your home button, and you will see the apps that are running.

Not everything you see int eh Recently used app bar is still running. This will show you apps that are running in addition to apps that have been recently ran.

Only apps that are programmed to run in the background will run.

Did anyone else's 3G sign at the top change to 4G on AT&T?!?!?!??

    Yes.

AT&T HSPA+ meets the ITU definition of 4G and they asked Apple to change this last year.

Yes give it a little time. The battery meter is not exact. If you still see this type of drain (and you didnt say what you were doing to loose that 3%) You can expect .5% an hour if nothing else is going on. Push email etc will lessen that. Then I would try the "reset all settings" since you have updated to 5.1. settings>general>reset>reset all settings. When the phone reboots, select "set up as new phone" and run through the wizard. This will not delete your data or apps. It just resets the settings in te iPhone. You can then set back up any wifi connections, and particular settings. Siri will hve to be set back for who you are and your email signature will have to be set uop again. Things like that but all email, apps and other data will remain.Do NOT restore from backup, there is no need and that could restore the issue. This is done without iTunes and only takes a few minutes. Hope this helps

I'm not sure what to think of this update.  I woke up at 100% and it's already dropped 3% in less than two hours.  My husband and I bought our iPhones on the same day, and he charged it last night and it went from 100%-95% overnight - so not bad at all.

I feel like mine my have some bad battery issues going on, that 5.1 did not fix.  Also, I am now seeing the 4G network.

    Thoughts?

Hopefully 5.1 helps with the iPhone but if it continues to be a problem our company has been working on an iPhone Rechargeable Case called the ChargeIt! 2x that is Apple Approved. It will be available next Thursday, March 15th on our website. This is just a suggestion but it's actually a nice case that adds 1900 mAh of power but not much bulk. I'm just passing along the information to see if that can help at all. It's a very affordable price at $39.95 so it won't totally empty your wallet. I really hope your phone battery gets better but if not maybe you can consider this. You can just even check it out at www.digitaltreasures.com. I really hope that helps, good luck!

Julymel, You dont have to turn off all the features to make it work. Just turn off the ones you dont really need. Like location, leave on maps for example, turn off facebook (do you really need the world knowing where you are all the time). Anyway things you dont need knowing the location turn off but irtemes you do turn on. Another popular one is in system settings Time Zone, there is no reason to have GPS checking all the time to see if you changed time zone. If in fact you travel, the cell network will adjust . From what I understand that feature is just for if you travel across zonea and do not have cellular coverage then GPS will set the zone for you. However its constantly looking to see if you have gone into another zone. Anyway point is there are a lot of features that are on by default that not everyone needs so if you dont use it turn it off. Do not accept that you have to turn off everything to just have the phone. Also the reset all settings already mentioned followed by a full drain and recharge has really helped in the past. Lastly post you usage and standby and remaining % and then you can see where you are verses the stated specs. You can do some math to see how its performing pretty easily.

Do we actually know that 5.1 won't work if restored from a backup, or are we just assuming that it will have the same issues that 5.0 and 5.01 did?

You had mentioned location services for find my phone. That is actually an iCloud feature. So if you are ok with not having iCloud, just turn off each component but leave on find my phone. That may come in handy at some point   Deleting iCloud acct will not really help, turning off each component will accompish what you want and still give you the option if you ever want it again.

The so called "bug"  you refer to is really by design not a bug. The sensor is designed to stay on whenever the phone is not locked so it can tell when its raised to your face and can activate Siri. So if you dont use that feature it make since to turn it off (yes a reboot is required to lock it in) but givin the technology I seriously doubt that sensor uses that much power. I suspect not much more than an LED. For the record I do leave it off cause any extra drain no matter how small for features I dont use just makes since to try and save.

First impressions: Siri "Raise to Speak" bug continues. Bad sign...

If you want to really turn off the sensor, after you've de-selected Raise to Speak in the Settings menu, you'll have to turn off the phone. Otherwise, it will stay on.

Now I have the possibility of turning 3G off. Good sign...

In my tests, the drain is anything but small.  Worse, the feature only works about 20-30% of the attempts in my tests.  I would rather just hold it in front of me and push the button.

    Let me add one comment:

Besides battery issues, I'm very frustrated...

Suppose I sent by mistaken an email to someone and I made a typo: john@mi.com

and the correct way was john@me.com. Doesn't make any sense to need to make a restore using iTunes to correct it.

Steps to Reproduce: Sent an email to someone and make a typo and try to delete.

Expected Results: I really expect to have the ability to remove the complete list or individual emails (cache) from my iPhone. Unfortunately Cydia (AutoFill Eraser) has this ability, but I refuse to jailbreak my iphone to have it.

Please Apple! IMHO this is not complicate. As we have right now more and more iPhones have been using for Enterprise Corporations, that is a critical feature that is missing on a professional device (smartphone)

Sorry my friends, I know the thread is related to battery, but I should make this comment. I'm very frustrated that I cannot remove wrong emails. :-(

Delete the contact in 'contacts' app.
