Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Yes, and my data rate is half what it was before.  I'm not the least thrilled.  I will see what it shows at another location as I am in a radio dead zone where I live.

Nope have not tried it. However there is no need to when you do the reset all settings because it does not erase anything other than the phones settings. So when you run through the wizard telling it u want siri and don't want diagnostics etc the phones is back like it was with all your data intact.

And yes if you have a corrupt setting or data causing an issue and that is backed up, Then you restore that data with the corruption, it does not matter what iOS you have you are still restoring corruption back to the device. So yes restoring a backup with corrupted data still wont work with iOS 5.1  I would 99.9999% guarantee

Do we actually know that 5.1 won't work if restored from a backup, or are we just assuming that it will have the same issues that 5.0 and 5.01 did?

I've had the phone for less than two weeks - which makes me mad because I waited SO long to get an iPhone (due to being stuck in contracts with tmobile), and now it's like really...all that for THAT?!

I just can't believe that such an expensive, and supposedly high tech product has so many issues.

Which issues?  Remember, nothing in this world is perfect.

99.9999% guarantee that APPLE doesn't know what they are doing and didn't fix these issues with 5.1?   Awfully pessimistic...   I'm thinking they probably did fix it since 99.9999% of those upgrading to 5.1 will have no idea about this issue whatsoever........

OK I went ahead and turned off the locations - you are right, I don't really need it because I don't use Siri much and if I do, I can turn it off.  I've also turned off most of the icloud features (honestly I might even just delete icloud).

As for the other system services I definitely turned all that off too.  haha I swear this is kind of stupid to me that in order for me to use my phone, I need to turn off all the features I bought it for in the first place.  I have an iPad 2(wifi only) and I only charge it once a month.  What's crazy is that until I got the iphone, I didn't know of all the settings  you need to change for battery improvements, so my iPad was running with ALL the features on and the battery STILL lasts through the week.  I only charge it once to 100% and let it go.  I thought the iPhone would be similar, but dang, it is nothing like the iPad 2!

You bought the iPhone so you can send traffic, diagnostic, and location information to Apple?  How nice of you.  Or maybe you just like getting ads based on your location...

The iPad and the iPhone are NOT the same thing.  You might have noticed a slight difference in size and weight?

I'm not sure what to think of this update.  I woke up at 100% and it's already dropped 3% in less than two hours.  My husband and I bought our iPhones on the same day, and he charged it last night and it went from 100%-95% overnight - so not bad at all.

I feel like mine my have some bad battery issues going on, that 5.1 did not fix.  Also, I am now seeing the 4G network.

    Thoughts?

    AT&T silliness.

That doesnt work. Its the email cache he is referring to. Like the auto entry in Outlook address bar for example.  When you start typing an address and latest entries pop up. iPhone keeps in in there even though the actual contact has all the right information. if you start typing bill@xxxx you will have both the bad entry and the correct one (from contacts) pop up and if not careful you will select the bad one.  No way to get rid of it that I have seen.

    Let me add one comment:

Besides battery issues, I'm very frustrated...

Suppose I sent by mistaken an email to someone and I made a typo: john@mi.com

and the correct way was john@me.com. Doesn't make any sense to need to make a restore using iTunes to correct it.

Steps to Reproduce: Sent an email to someone and make a typo and try to delete.

Expected Results: I really expect to have the ability to remove the complete list or individual emails (cache) from my iPhone. Unfortunately Cydia (AutoFill Eraser) has this ability, but I refuse to jailbreak my iphone to have it.

Please Apple! IMHO this is not complicate. As we have right now more and more iPhones have been using for Enterprise Corporations, that is a critical feature that is missing on a professional device (smartphone)

Sorry my friends, I know the thread is related to battery, but I should make this comment. I'm very frustrated that I cannot remove wrong emails. :-(

Delete the contact in 'contacts' app.

Thank you so much for all your responses.  I am going to take it through the day since I've only had one full charge since updating to 5.1; and will post the usage vs. standby to see where I stand.

I have changed some of the features, but I would also like to to be able to use my phone and all its fun features!

If we jailbreak our iPhones, there is a tool called AutoFill Erase that does a wonderful job.

But I wouldn't like to jailbreak my iphone

    Apple, please!!!!!

you should try shutting off your apps that are running in the background. double tap your home button, and you will see the apps that are running.

Not everything you see int eh Recently used app bar is still running. This will show you apps that are running in addition to apps that have been recently ran.

Only apps that are programmed to run in the background will run.

And not everything that is running shows in the app bar.  This morning I had a data problem with an app, and it crashed, repeatedly.  Then it refused to load entirely, and I ended it in the app bar.  Then I checked with 'system status' app, and the cpu was at 100%, and not changing.  Reset the phone, and retried.  Same thing.  Deleted app.  Tried the free version.  Same problem.   The app is not compatible with the data file I put into it.  I processed the file through another program, and reloaded it, and now it works with the app.  Bottom line, everyone needs an app that will display the CPU percentage so that you can catch such run-away apps before they flatten your battery.

Does anyone know of an app that puts a cpu usage graphic in the status bar?

BTW, did I miss it before, or is there a new graphic in the GPS status list?  A green outline arrow is there now, and I don't recall seeing it before...

    Yes.

AT&T HSPA+ meets the ITU definition of 4G and they asked Apple to change this last year.

Wow!  Now I can tell everyone that the update gives me a 4G phone?  Do I also tell them that I now have speeds of 2-3mbps down, and .8-.99 up?  I don't THINK so.

BTW that's half what I was getting before.  I might need to talk to AT&T, or maybe it is just lousy reception at home.

I dont think you are understanding what I wrote or am saying. If you restore a backup that has corrupted data in it the OS will not somehow magically fix it. Try that with Windows or any other OS or application. So I am changing my percentage to 100% .  I never said that Apple didnt fix anything. I said that restoring a backup that contains corrupted data will restore the corruption no matter what iOS version. I stand by that 100%

Now if I understand what YOU are saying, restoring an old backup from an older device (that is not corrupted) will it work with 5.1? Probably so but remember the real issue there was restoring old apps not optimized for iOS5. Again I have not restored anything, i just updated to iOS5.1 and kept on trucking. All is working fine here. Except I now have 400 hrs of standby. I guess Apple doubled it secretly to see if folks would still complain.   (kidding of course)

hey - no need to be rude about it   I know I'm probably asking a lot of the same questions you have seen here for months, but I am new to the iPhone, and I just want to make sure that I can enjoy my phone to the fullest.  nothing wrong with that.

you're right, I didn't buy a phone in order to send all my location activities to the world, but I also didn't think I was buying a phone that requires such a configuration, and turning off or tweaking all of its capabilities for my battery to last.  Yes - nothing in the world is perfect, but as a consumer who spends money on something, I expect SOME level of satisfaction, rather than worrying about my battery dropping every time I use my phone.

that is all - I'm not being stupid, or trying to be a smart *** - just want to understand how my phone works.

LOL, rphunte42 is not a bad guy he just comes across 'harsh" at times. We have both taken a beating on this forum because our iPhones work fine so we have been called "Apple trolls, Apple lovers, employees of Apple, mindless followers" etc etc. And a few users here think that if a phone has a feature it should be on whether or not its being used, then complain that the battery dont last.  So that takes it toll after a while. So take a look here at Apples posted recommendations. They of course really should have shipped the phones with everything off and made users turn on what they wanted but............
