Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    thank.

I have tried the full drain and it only came abck to 20% after 10 hours plugged in

I just tried the soft restore and it has gone up to 24%, its been on charge since 6am (MST) and nothings really changed.

If I do a full restore I will lose everything on it correct? If I back it up to iCloud will it save all my pics?

Its only available for certain carriers. Verizon and ATT do not have it so I hear.  ATT supposidly removing 2g making room for their 4g service.

I updated my iPhone 4 this morning OTA.  The entire process took me roughly 15-20 min. That was at 7:20am.  It is now 12:06pmand my battery is at 72%.  This correction to the battery is crap it didn't work and I am rather unimpressed hopefully it will get better over the next couple days cause I'm going to run my battery dead tonight and give it a full charge.  Fingers crossed.

If you use iTunes it will offer to backup first then restore the firmware then offer to restore the backup. I believe the entire phone is backed up but I would backup the pics separatly via Photostream or other means just to be safe as you cant get those back. iCloud backs up everything too but of course slower than a USB cable attached to the pc.  So iTunes restore should offer a full end to end solution and get you back with your apps and data and hopefully fix the battery charge issue. Otherwise an Apple store trip may be in order (maybe just a new battery not exchange) Post back the results. Good Luck!

Are you seeing some abnormal usage/drain?  I mean how have you used the phone since then? If you are seeing  high usage reported and you are not really using the phone then there is an issue. You may want to reset network settings, reboot and see what happens.

It's my normal usage. I am not doing anything any different.  So how would I go about resetting everything. This is my first iPhone I used to be a poor crap berry person.

    Thanks.

What was the battery immediately after you finished the OTA update (when it was not plugged in and charging)?

hey - no need to be rude about it   I know I'm probably asking a lot of the same questions you have seen here for months, but I am new to the iPhone, and I just want to make sure that I can enjoy my phone to the fullest.  nothing wrong with that.

you're right, I didn't buy a phone in order to send all my location activities to the world, but I also didn't think I was buying a phone that requires such a configuration, and turning off or tweaking all of its capabilities for my battery to last.  Yes - nothing in the world is perfect, but as a consumer who spends money on something, I expect SOME level of satisfaction, rather than worrying about my battery dropping every time I use my phone.

that is all - I'm not being stupid, or trying to be a smart *** - just want to understand how my phone works.

I did not intend to be rude.  Sarcastic, yes.  Unreasonable expectations bother me because I spend almost 3 months evaluating phones before I decided to buy the iPhone 4S.  I did that so there were no surprises, having been somewhat unhappy with my previouse smartphone.  Most 4S users don't use EVERYTHING that it can do.  I rarely use Siri, but there are some things it does superbly, and some that is really isn't suited for.  I live in an area with good 3G coverage, although at my home, it is usually 2 to 3 bars.

The ugly fact of life is that EVERYTHING your phone does impacts on the battery as that is the source of electricity when away from AC power.  That being the case, it is up to the user to decide what functions are more important, and which are not going to be used at all.  APPLE, in their infinite wisdom, ship the phone with just about everything (but Bluetooth) defaulting to ON.  I disagree with this approach, but that's what they decided to do.  When I got my phone, I first went through the settings and configured the phone for what I normally do with the phone.  That meant that I turned a lot of things off.  I don't drive in traffic much (retired), so my input to the crowdsourced traffic information wouldn't be of much use, so it is off.  I travel about twice a year, so the cell search function isn't something that would benefit Apple much, so it is also off.  Ads, I don't want, to that is off.  I am not going through all the functions, but you should have the idea by now.  I have most location functions on for about 10 apps, and the others off.  I have notifications on for about the same number of apps.  No Bluetooth.  Siri is on, iCloud is on for 'find my iPhone' and Photostream, and that is all.

Complaining about battery use because things are on isn't beneficial.  Complaining about excessive battery use with NOTHING is on, is why people come here.

Bottom line:  There ain't no such thing as a FREE LUNCH.

99.9999% guarantee that APPLE doesn't know what they are doing and didn't fix these issues with 5.1?   Awfully pessimistic...   I'm thinking they probably did fix it since 99.9999% of those upgrading to 5.1 will have no idea about this issue whatsoever........

The only thing that is apparent so far is that 5.1 fixes the 'phantom usage' that many users were complaining about.  Beyond that, there is a 3G/2G toggle for SOME users, but not US ATT users, it would seem.

Note that I am one who has had good battery life all along, but right now, I am at 3 hours and 30 minutes with only 9 minutes, and 99% charge left.  Still too soon to really tell.
