hey - no need to be rude about it I know I'm probably asking a lot of the same questions you have seen here for months, but I am new to the iPhone, and I just want to make sure that I can enjoy my phone to the fullest. nothing wrong with that.
you're right, I didn't buy a phone in order to send all my location activities to the world, but I also didn't think I was buying a phone that requires such a configuration, and turning off or tweaking all of its capabilities for my battery to last. Yes - nothing in the world is perfect, but as a consumer who spends money on something, I expect SOME level of satisfaction, rather than worrying about my battery dropping every time I use my phone.
that is all - I'm not being stupid, or trying to be a smart *** - just want to understand how my phone works.
I did not intend to be rude. Sarcastic, yes. Unreasonable expectations bother me because I spend almost 3 months evaluating phones before I decided to buy the iPhone 4S. I did that so there were no surprises, having been somewhat unhappy with my previouse smartphone. Most 4S users don't use EVERYTHING that it can do. I rarely use Siri, but there are some things it does superbly, and some that is really isn't suited for. I live in an area with good 3G coverage, although at my home, it is usually 2 to 3 bars.
The ugly fact of life is that EVERYTHING your phone does impacts on the battery as that is the source of electricity when away from AC power. That being the case, it is up to the user to decide what functions are more important, and which are not going to be used at all. APPLE, in their infinite wisdom, ship the phone with just about everything (but Bluetooth) defaulting to ON. I disagree with this approach, but that's what they decided to do. When I got my phone, I first went through the settings and configured the phone for what I normally do with the phone. That meant that I turned a lot of things off. I don't drive in traffic much (retired), so my input to the crowdsourced traffic information wouldn't be of much use, so it is off. I travel about twice a year, so the cell search function isn't something that would benefit Apple much, so it is also off. Ads, I don't want, to that is off. I am not going through all the functions, but you should have the idea by now. I have most location functions on for about 10 apps, and the others off. I have notifications on for about the same number of apps. No Bluetooth. Siri is on, iCloud is on for 'find my iPhone' and Photostream, and that is all.
Complaining about battery use because things are on isn't beneficial. Complaining about excessive battery use with NOTHING is on, is why people come here.
Bottom line: There ain't no such thing as a FREE LUNCH.
