Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Well the muted audio on outgoing calls should be fixed as well as SIM issues no signal issues and a variety of other items. Yes the phantom usage appears to have been fixed as well.  Looks like a pretty decent update if you ask me and they threw in a few cool features

    99.9999% guarantee that APPLE doesn't know what they are doing and didn't fix these issues with 5.1?   Awfully pessimistic...   I'm thinking they probably did fix it since 99.9999% of those upgrading to 5.1 will have no idea about this issue whatsoever........

    The only thing that is apparent so far is that 5.1 fixes the 'phantom usage' that many users were complaining about.  Beyond that, there is a 3G/2G toggle for SOME users, but not US ATT users, it would seem.

    Note that I am one who has had good battery life all along, but right now, I am at 3 hours and 30 minutes with only 9 minutes, and 99% charge left.  Still too soon to really tell.

    the new 5.1 update made some battery life better and other worse. Unfortunately I fall the latter category. My battery is draining at a faster pace now. And worst of all I'm getting worse reception now, 2-3 bars compared to 4-5 bars before the update!

    Wait you said it had already been off the charger and used a bit while still on 100% so that 15%  drop was not just during that short45 min time. The battery percent meter does not change by the second (actually i dont think its real accurate to start with) Anyway in reality you used 1 hr +23 min +45 min since the 100% mark. Of course you would have to run the math to determine if you are at or near spec based on the type of usage that 23 and 45 min were and divide out the standby. So at a glance 85% remaining may not be too bad afterall.

    I assume you have the specs to use so 8hr for talk, 6 for 3g internet and 9 wifi (7.5 is a good number to use for average. In case you are not aware or dont want to figure it out stdbytotal/200 for stdby , talk time/8,  internet time/7.5. add all those together =x  then 100-x to see what should be remaining usage reported. That is a very close estimate to see if you are at or near Apples posted specs.

    This is where your particular situation has you blinded to additional realities......    My situation leads me to a different conclusion.   I shut off only the Time Zone and iADs location services.   I have 3 email accounts set up, with two being PUSH and one of those Exchange.   I use wifi all the time and BT is on for when I'm in the car.   I have icloud running, iTunes Match running, photostream running.   I don't waste time clearing out my app history every time I'm done with an app, so my previous apps bar has some 20 apps listed in there.

    I charge my phone every night, while sleeping.   64gb 4s received on day one of the release.

    So, I upgeraded to 5.1 yesterday evening, then plugged in at bed time.   This morning I unplugged and all the while attached to wifi, I lost nothing ---- After 2+ hours, my phone was still at 100% with 23min of usage.

    Time to go out --- I left home, stopped for something to eat and while there (on 3G or AT&T's faux 4G), worked a bunch of emails, did a little facebooking and read some news stories.   Immediately, when leaving my wifi connection, the battery began to drop quickly.   After some 40min on 3G, with steady usage, I was donw to 85% remaining.   So that's 15% in less than 3/4 hour.   The phone was warm, but not hot.

    This reinforces my belief that the problem is in how the 4s and iOS 5 manage cellular data with the new dual antenna system.   For the heck of it, I brought my iPAD-1 with me, set up with the same exact email configuration, same wifi/3g connections, same iCloud, photostream and iTunes Match settings....   After all morning and part of the afternoon, it's at 98% remaining after 8 hours.    I know I'm comparing Apples & Oranges (so to speak), but to see the phone battery drop so quickly, just by leaving the wifi environment, to me, is very telling.

    I'm guessing that APPLE is not going to be able to fix the 3G battery drain issue and iPhone 5 is our only hope.   And that will require a bigger battery, and probably a bigger form, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.......

    Complaining about battery use because things are on isn't beneficial.  Complaining about excessive battery use with NOTHING is on, is why people come here.

    Bottom line:  There ain't no such thing as a FREE LUNCH.

    That is totally the spec for std by. 12/200=.06  100%-6%=94% remaining.

    dkalchev made a good point in an earlier post. about resetting after an update. Also it has been discovered way back this solution and it has help a lot of folks so I would try it now.

    settings>general>reset>reset all settings. When the phone reboots select "setup as new". Do NOT restore as you dont need to this will not delete your apps or data. Run through the wizard as presented.  Once finished let the battery drain all the way until the phone turns off. Then charge it back to 100% and leave it al least 1.5 hrs after it reaches 100% (overnight is a good option). Again once it comes up you will see your phone as it was other than desktop wallpaper and other phone settings will need to be configured as well as who u are to Siri. This only takes a few minutes other than the battery drain and recharge. Give it a try and report back.

    I am not sure what you mean by 'basically nothing'.  The phone is never idle unless you do a power off.  Normally, it is doing something, even if it is just updating all the system timers, checking to see if there are notifications, alarms, keeping track of cell tower signal strenths, and maintaining contact with the tower, and a lot of other stuff as well.  So, it may be hard to define what 'basically nothing' means.  However, you seem to be using the phone about 1/4 of the total time since full charge, and you have enough power for another 9 hours.  If you plug it when you sleep, you should be good for the whole day.

    Sprint is a CDMA carrier. They do not have an EDGE network. The closest CDMA equivalent is the 1XRTT network. CDMA iPhones have never had the ability to disable 3G.

    Hey!  Nope I been looking and cant find squat about those two issues. Apple has stated they would be addressing those issues in an update and everyone assumed it would be 5.1 since it was a few weeks ago. Anyway its not on the release notes and I have not found anything else about it out here in internet land.

    And yeah ATT 4G  haha. That was a surprise lol. I suspect ATT users are STILL surprised

    And you haven't said what are the settings you are using on the phone.

    If you have location services/system services on, bluetooth on, push on, 3G on, etc, all of that will spend a lot of energy...

    You might also try to restore the phone in iTunes but in DFU mode and set it as new - that is what I always do! This should let you perform a real clean install.

    Right now, I'm seeing what I never saw to this day: AMAZING battery life!!

    14h:37m of waiting time;

    34m of usage time;

    91% battery left.

    Made 3 phone calls and sent a few text messages. Not much, VERY light usage.

    But, yesterday, with the same use, the battery would be at 20%-15%. So, what a HUGE difference for me!

    I will keep watching the phone. But it's looking good!
