Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

4s battery life just great before 5.0.1 - after, it is totally horrific, light use and the phone is dead in half a day.

    Must revert to 5.0...

    Unhappy.

I never had battery problems on ios 5.0 or 5.0.1.  I upgraded to 5.1 yesterday and my battery life is even better now.  With ios 5.0.1 (94A6?) I was getting an average of 56 hours standby and 6.5 hours of use.  With 5.1 I am currently at:

    Standby: 12 hours 1 mins

    Usage: 1 hour 28 mins

    Battery Remaining: 88%

I have everything on (as I always did), with the exception of bluetooth.  I went to Network and toggled 3G off.  Not sure if that really is making a difference or not.  Oddly, after toggling 3G off, my phone reception is almost always at full strength.  On ios 5.0.1 when we did not have the ability to toggle 3G off, my signal strength was typically around 3-4 bars out of 5.  I personally think that the battery issue was related to cell reception, and Apple has somehow addressed it.

Overall, I can't complain as my battery only seems to get better.  Hopefully more people will notice this with there phones as well.  One thing to note, the 3G toggle is only available to those on a cell network (company) that supports the ability to turn it off.

rphunte42 : thanks for the info... let's see how it goes. in anyway, it's much better than before. it was not usable before 5.1 update literally...

When I woke up after 8 hours 17 mins, it was only 7 minute usage time and the battery was 100 percent still. I've thought this is a dream.

Yes its absolutely fine. That 7 minute is phone's internal usage. If that 7 minute usage wouldn't have been there, then the phone would have lasted weeks on single charge.

Then I checked new and stuff around 25 minutes-ish. I've lost 6 percent.

Yes this is fine too. It depends on how you use that 25 mintues.

Now I'm on 3g and push mail is off. It's 1pm now almost. my battery is 75 percent. I haven't used much and I turned off push. Did a few phone calls, not long maybe in total 10 mins.

    usage: 1 hour 46 mins

    standby 12 hours 44 mins

Looks like there is some phantom usage but i don't understand where it's coming from. It was much better at home. At work I have a full bar 3g, I'm in the middle of London basicly. Still confused a bit.. Hmm....

PS: I have icloud, only contacts are on.

Here i guess there is no phantom usage. You are on 3G. 12 hours standby, that means 8% battery usage by the system. That's 14% total (6% user usage + 8% standby usage).

Phone call 10 minutes, thats around 2-3%. So the total is 17%.

Remaining unknown usage = 25-17= 8%, i guess your wifi was on maybe, maybe siri was on, and maybe locations services were on, bluetooth, etc ??? if those things were on then it perfectly makes sense loosing those 8%.

NOTE : You have enabled contacts sync in icloud, so everytime you open your contacts app, it will connect to the icloud server and sync.

Settings>general>reset>reset all settings.  Afterwards the phone will reboot. Select "set up as new" dont worry that will not wipe your apps or data. Once you run through the wizard you will be back and your apps and data will still be there. Do NOT restore from backup. there is no need.  Then run the battery all the way down until it cuts off and charge back to 100% (leave for at least 1.5 hrs after it says 100%) to fully charge the battery.

    Guys!

    Need your HELP.

I wanna do a reset/ "reset all settings" tonight, after installing ios5.1, just to make my battery life better..

My question is: how do i do it? drain my battery to let's say 5-6%, and then do that "reset all setting", or drain it to 5-6%, then charge it full, then do "reset all setting"? i have a 4s

    Thanks in advance,

    Peter

Yeah I agree, it was much much worse before the update. I was losing 30-3 percent battery just doing nothing.

Yes this is fine too. It depends on how you use that 25 mintues.

That's a bit suspicious. Just checked bbc news. and mail. That's all. Didn't play games. My bluetooth is always switched off.

Remaining unknown usage = 25-17= 8%, i guess your wifi was on maybe, maybe siri was on, and maybe locations services were on, bluetooth, etc ??? if those things were on then it perfectly makes sense loosing those 8%.

Yeah maybe. My location services are all closed apart from Google Maps. Under system services only 2 are on the must ones. ad, traffic, timezone are all off. Yes siri is on but raise to speak off. I can't put my finger on. But as I said I'm quite happy compared to last 3 weeks. It was nightmare for me.

The guy next to me has all these options on and still he's better with his 5.0.1. It's funny, that's all

    sad

NOTE : You have enabled contacts sync in icloud, so everytime you open your contacts app, it will connect to the icloud server and sync.

Thanks a lot for this info! I've always thought, if I sync via icloud that'll be synced. So it's better to get your contacts and then switch off contacts from icloud and choose keep on phone? What is your method for contacts?

guys i am not sure what is going on with apple.  as much as i love the phone i am not sure i can deal with that battery problem.  i have the 4s and just upgraded to 5.1.  my battery now is reaaaaaly worse.  i mean i go to bed with 80 percent life and wake up to 30 percent life.  i killed all applications running and i have nothing running using location services and the battery still is dying fast.  not sure what to do now.  i dont want the android but i hate to say i miss the blackberry battery life.

i am not sure apple care about the battery problem since i am sure they are working on the new iphone and should fix the problem for the new iphone.  a reason for you to dump the 4s and buy the new one.  brilliant marketing plan just does not work for the consumer.

well ya you can do that, you can switch off contact sync on icloud and choose to keep on phone. Or you can totally not use iCloud and snyc with windows contact. I snyc my contacts with windows contact.

I use iCloud only for mail and notes.

That guy who has just commented that he has a standby of 56 hours and 6 hours of usage, is either boosting or doesn't use his phone at all. No smartphone these days last dat long with 6 hours of usage, especially when it comes to iphone4s

    Well good day everyone,

From yesterday I let my phone die completely which came easily because it happened at 4:27pm.  Just very sad.

I reset all settings and started from jump again.  So I took my phone off at 6:43am this morning and it was at 100%, it is now 11:01am and:

    76%

    Usage: 2 hours, 7 min

    Standby: 4 hiours, 16 min.

It's better today actually quite a bit better.  I'll keep you posted on what comes of it all.

Battery life seems pretty good now. Here's my latest screenshot. This is with location services and bluetooth off, but wifi and cellular data on. The usage includes email, messages, and browsing, and does not include any of the super low-power activities like listening to music. Not bad!

I started having this same problem last Tuesday, March 6.  iPhone 4S was discharging at a rapid rate and always felt warm.  Would not hold a charge overnight, so I shut it off.  When I turned it back on that seemed to solve the problem.  When I looked further under general settings, diagnostics and usage, there was some program that was trying to access my phone data repeatedly,  Hundreds of times over two days.  That is what stopped after I just turned the phone off.  I can't tell from the details what or who was trying to repeatedly access my phone, but all this is reported to Apple and I am thinking about going through Support to see if they can find it who/what it was.
