Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

My current statistics after updating to iOS 5.1 is as follows:

    Usage: 2 Hours, 51 Minutes

    Standby: 20 Hours, 48 Minutes

    = 57%

I can happily say that after updating to iOS 5.1 my battery drainage issues has been fixed. I don't know why some people are still complaining. =\

Well as annoying as it is and of course it would be a bit silly to turn off all features because I exactly want those features, that is why I bought the iPhone and not a 200€ phone, but this is a little computer, has a better screen than my laptop and all that. So we shouldn't expect miracles. All I want is get through the day and from all my friends I know that some of them are succesful and 5.1 has indeed fixed their issues. So it is not necessarily (only) the hardware/software and more a combination of several things.

To all this ranting.  I am going to stand on the side of indifference.  Agreed people can be mindless and happy and content with something new and shiny.  Your analogy made me laugh but now think of it this way, I received my iphone 4 for free.  My blackverry stopped working and they gave me an iphone.  I want the phone to work as it should.  Yes I am looking for a fix but if you read any of my previous messages my phone is actually a necessity to me.

People are not mineless most are good natured and trusting of others that when they are told something will go a particular way or work a particular way that it will.  I know it is not truly that way but at the same time a life of product fuelled materialism what more can we expect.

So all I'm trying to get at with all this is no need to slam people for wanting to make something better or to help others make things better.  I respect yourview on the entire thing but you must also respect the fact that the people on here are working together to make a hard situation a little easier.

    Cheers

Right, and people like yourself guarantee apple won't have to deliver.

We are all complaining because we are still not getting that kind of performance. Btw, do the MATH your phone is still not near spec. Maybe if you had 7hr talk time and 20hr stand by, but you're at less than a third of promises delivery

If you are not using Internet for high bandwidth tasks such as watching online TV or streaming music, you may disable 3G. This will turn off the power consuming 3G radio and will leave your phone on good old GSM (2G) for voice calls and EDGE for data. By all means the 2G network is better for voice. Usually, the 2G network coverage is also better, which will contribute to longer battery life as well.

For me, this was the most important feature of iOS 5.1.

Actually you couldn't be any further from the turth on that comment.  I have made this issue very clear to apple.  I have called into their retention department several times regarding the battery life.

Apple does have to deliver cause on top of the fact that people expect them to deliver, people like myself will bring this deal to the forefront.  And taking this into a lawsuit doesn't hurt apple at all, now your showing your lack of education here.  They have the money to throw at this issue make it disappear and never surface to tarish their image.

Now what really hurts apple is people leaving.  People making this issue publically known as we are doing here.  How many tech sites and computer sites do not quote back to these exact forums and blogs regarding this issue.  Think of it this way if you can make an issue disappear with money and have the public never see it, it makes the whole situation that much easier.  Now when unhappy customers post countless topics and messages of this issue and it leaks out to the internet as a whole, well there lies a truly tough situation for apple and a situation which they must put up a true response and action to correct this issue.

    tocalton,

7h talk time and 20h standby on 3G, you say?

Let's see the math. iPhone 4S is supposed to survive 8h of talk time on 3G. By using 7h, you are left with 12.5% of the battery. 12.5% of 200 hours standby is 25 hours. Unfortunately, that 200 hours standby are not on 3G, but on WiFi.

So, in order to be according to the spec, after 7h of talking, if you connect to an WiFi network (so that 3G is not used), your phone will shut down after 25 hours of standby.

Therefore, you wanting that after that much usage, you will have 2/3 of battery -- is an good example of unrealistic expectations.

Yup, happy the 3G on/off button is back. EDGE is more than enough for me, I had 3G off the day after the update but I saw no significant change. But I'll observe it long time and I'll call Apple again. Still have a hunch it could be my carrier/sim.

and btw when they say 200 hours of standby they literally mean if you just leave it in standby it will last 200 hours. 8 hours of 3G talktime ONLY if you just do that.

On what planet do you live where class action lawsuits are silent? Further, Apple is delaying until 1yr contracts are expired and we are onto the iPhone 5-- at which point l, no doubt, the iPhone 4s will be a secondary issue. You called the retention department, and you call me naive? Look-up retention

As of right now my usage sits at:

    Usage: 4h, 24min

    Standby: 9h, 14min

    =43%

I'm not complaing at all.  I've been browsing alot and I have also been texting, emails, taking pics, etc. so I don't think I'll be to far off of specs, but yesterday after I did the update by this time I was down at 6% so it has improved.

I ahve all notifications on, emails I fetch myself.  Screen is at about 30% brightness but thats cause I don't like a super bright screen.  I have my 3G on and I also use wifi.  I'm not going to shut things off on my phone cause I have it to use it.
