Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

4s battery life just great before 5.0.1 - after, it is totally horrific, light use and the phone is dead in half a day.

    Must revert to 5.0...

    Unhappy.

Maybe try 5.1.  You started, most likely, with 5.0, then came 5.01, now the current release is 5.1.  Many people find it helps a lot, some not so much, and some of use find we did better with 5.01.

In this moment (after iOS 5.1 update):

    Usage: 4 Hours, 32 Minutes

    Standby: 1 day, 14 Houres

    Battery: 40%

Really seems that update fixed the bugs!

Yeah jeez some of you are acting ridiculous...the vast majority of 4s users have no battery issues (I know at least 15 to 20 people with them and no one has issues) and as is becoming more and more apparent on here, many who think they have problems just think that they should be able to get 200 hrs standby, 10 hrs talk time and 6 hrs 3G usage all on one charge every single time, which is obviously and clearly not what the specs indicate. If you truly don't like your phone, return it. Acting like a spoiled child on an Internet forum and telling others that they are wrong for enjoying the phone and accepting the battery life certainly doesn't benefit anyone!

guys i am not sure what is going on with apple.  as much as i love the phone i am not sure i can deal with that battery problem.  i have the 4s and just upgraded to 5.1.  my battery now is reaaaaaly worse.  i mean i go to bed with 80 percent life and wake up to 30 percent life.  i killed all applications running and i have nothing running using location services and the battery still is dying fast.  not sure what to do now.  i dont want the android but i hate to say i miss the blackberry battery life.

i am not sure apple care about the battery problem since i am sure they are working on the new iphone and should fix the problem for the new iphone.  a reason for you to dump the 4s and buy the new one.  brilliant marketing plan just does not work for the consumer.

OK, consider this.  My wife has a 3GS.  Since she bought it, with IOS 4.3.1 in it, there have been at least 5 OS updates, provided FREE by Apple, and each has added value with new features.  Here's the deal, tell me about ONE company that provides updates, with new features, for phones that are now 3 versions back.  This tends to lead me to conclude that your conclusion doesn't match with observed facts.

If you have a problem, give APPLE at least a chance to address them before coming to daming conclusions without basis in fact.

Hmmm, I have 2h 37m standby and 1hr 34 min dropping me to 50% and I'm crying? Location is off, Bluetooth is off, system services is off -- maybe just turn the phone off?

The guy next to me has all these options on and still he's better with his 5.0.1. It's funny, that's all

    sad

That guy who has just commented that he has a standby of 56 hours and 6 hours of usage, is either boosting or doesn't use his phone at all. No smartphone these days last dat long with 6 hours of usage, especially when it comes to iphone4s

Perhaps his usage is listenign to music.  Specs say 40 hours listening to music, so 6 hours would only drain the battery a little.  My last check indicated I could last 56 hours at current usage levels.  It's not impossible.

sbailey4, thank you very much! I wasn't aware FB is such a problem. I do not really have many notifications coming in, but when I have time i check the news there and who is online. But I will see how it goes without notifications at all.

I'll try with manual pull of emails and less frequently refreshing twitter.

It is just frustrating because I did the exact same things on my iPhone 4 and it lasted longer. But thank you for all the tips, I hope they help, I am getting fed up.

Twitter and Facebook are both 'push' type services, with a lot of change going on, and updating all the time.  I don't use Twitter at all, but do check FB now and then on the phone.  I recommend you shut it down each time after you are done.

Although I understand where you're coming from with this, all you've shown with your post is the terrible work ethics of your business and your lack of leadership in the field. It is quite cowardly to criticize the business and make a cheap argument out of it for the sake of posting here and being condescending to people seeking value all the while profiting from lack of said value in your field - this takes away any credibility your argument might have had. Maybe you should have the guts to tell what firm you work for so that we can look elsewhere for sound marketing? Finally, your claiming that such or such a person is intelligent while others are not and using the Helsinky syndrome as an analogy shows once again how shallow your analysis of the situation is - they are just trying to mitigate the damages, as they've invested in the brand and its ecosystem. Honestly, this forum has nothing to do with all of this. People do have the intelligence to learn from their experience and if Apple can't make it a good experience for them, they will go elsewhere in time and take more care before buying. Also, for the record, way back when we argued your initial stance was not at all for people to go back to the 4 or anything like that... it was "take a stroll outside, enjoy life, don't worry be happy there's nothing you can do, stay in your cage". You were never about value, empowerment or consumer rights. Shame on you for twisting the facts you self-righteous *****.

We are all complaining because we are still not getting that kind of performance. Btw, do the MATH your phone is still not near spec. Maybe if you had 7hr talk time and 20hr stand by, but you're at less than a third of promises delivery

If you expect ANY consumer electronic device to live up to the specs in all cases, then you are going to be disappointed every single time you buy something.

    tocalton,

7h talk time and 20h standby on 3G, you say?

Let's see the math. iPhone 4S is supposed to survive 8h of talk time on 3G. By using 7h, you are left with 12.5% of the battery. 12.5% of 200 hours standby is 25 hours. Unfortunately, that 200 hours standby are not on 3G, but on WiFi.

So, in order to be according to the spec, after 7h of talking, if you connect to an WiFi network (so that 3G is not used), your phone will shut down after 25 hours of standby.

Therefore, you wanting that after that much usage, you will have 2/3 of battery -- is an good example of unrealistic expectations.

Every single one of those specs says 'up to'.  All the specs given are figures done under laboratory conditions, and represent the best available under perfect conditions.  Anyone expecting to get them in 'real life' is pretty much assured of being disappointed.  It seems someone tech savvy enough to appreciate the features of the 4S should understand this.  My conclusion is that those who insist that the phone 'live up to specs' are simply trolls, possibly with personal agendas, or perhaps business ones.

This is rediculous to turun off 3G - isn't this is the reason we buy new phone, soon will wnat to use it on 4th G and than what ? a solar panel ?? a little generator ?

Virtually every Android 4G owner complains of short battery life.  Consider before you move.

I started messing around with my settings last night, and the thing that greatly helped me was turning off push email.  I have 4 emails set to push on the phone (Apple email, 2 Gmail accounts via exchange, and an exchange through my webhost) and wasn't seeing terrible battery life...just nothing close to the iPhone 4 battery life.  I went ahead and changed the master setting to turn off push email and instead to check once an hour, and went into each individual email's settings and changed it to a one hour check as well, then I hard reboot the phone.

I do have a few of the location services off (Diagnostics & Usage, Location-based iAds, and Compass Calibration), and I turned off the location service for apps in which I don't think or want to have my location -- the same applies to app notifications.  I left Siri on, Bluetooth is left off until I need it, but everything else I left alone...3G/Wifi/GPS/etc. are on.

I've purposely tried to leave the phone alone for testing purposes and here's what I've got so far:

    image (1).png

This is nothing like I've seen before...I hope I didn't break my battery meter because I'm not believing it, lol.

If that was 5.0.1 I believe it would have been at 80% - 90%. iOS 5.1 has definately made an improvement!
