Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Hahaha... you should probably dunk your head in the nearest trough. It sounds like you need to cool off.

Naaahhh, he just has an agenda.  There are people who get their cookies by going to various product forums and trashing the product.  Makes they feel like they have power.  Ignore him.

Hi, after updating my iPhone 4s to IOS 5.1 I have noticed that while in standby mode phone does not discharge very fast. However, once I start using it, like browse internet or read an emails over Wi-Fi, percentage goes down dramatically fast. About 1% for each 10 seconds. Did anybody experienced the same? Anything I can do about it?

Yes, I have.  I suspect that the phone isn't updating the battery meter when the phone is in standby.  As you use it, then it begins checking more often.  Another way to save battery power.

I charged my phone to 100% and after it has been at 100% for a while I unplugged it and it was in standby over night. 5 hours later and it still had 100%. So it is definitely not draining when in standby, but as soon as I start to use it, it goes very fast.

Right now I am at 5h56min of standby and 56minutes of usage with 91% left. I am on wifi, 3G is activated, location services are off, Siri on, bluetooth off and I made a 10 minute call. FB, Twitte and email all have push off.

I am happy with 1hour usage=10% of battery, but it is a lot more when I check Twitter and FB. I also would like to have those push notifications on, at least for Twitter and email. But I'll continue to mess around with it.

I have noticed that Photostream is giving me some trouble at times. Occassionally, I take a lot of pictures at once, and then the phone starts to crash. When I go into the picture gallery to look at them, it sometimes freezes up, when I slide through the pics, it freezes right in the middle of 2 pics. I wondered if the upload to photostream might cause my battery issues as well.

Anyway, I still love my phone, the battery could be a bit better, yeah, but other than that there is no better phone for me.

You have used 9% of the battery after almost 1 hour of usage, and almost 6 hours of standby.  Standby isn't free, and will be reflected in the battery meter after you begin using the phone for other things.  As for PhotoStream freezing, I haven't seem this happen yet.  How long has it been since you rebooted the phone?  This usually fixes this kind of problem, unless you have a wi-fi issue with your router.

I upgraded to 5.1 last night and the battery life is awful!!!

The phone completely ran flat overnight so I did a full charge and then left it for 2 hours @ 100% before unplugging it.

It now loses 1% before my eyes (about every 5 minutes).

The Useage shows 1 hour 27 minutes since last charge and Standby time of 3 hours 48 minutes.

    The phone has become unuseable...

Suggestions please because I cannot use this for work and self use like this.

I used to get over 24 hours out of a full charge.

First, try power off, and restart, If that doesn't help, then do the 'hard reset'.  If that still doesn't help, then try the reset all settings.  You will have to put the settings back the way you had them.  Also, you might try resetting the network settings, and putting your email, etc. back in.

Get something like 'system status' app, and check the CPU meter to see if high CPU usage is the problem.  If it is, you will have to figure out what is running that eats the CPU time.

CPU time, and 3G are major battery users.

Well I fell for advice in other thread and did reset of all settings and content. Let the experiment begin. I hope I did not waste 2 hours of my life for nothing. Cause, honestly, if it is the way you think than I will look to replace this phone with someting different. I am tired of being constantly nervous about thought that my phone can swtich off anytime.

Being a fierce advocate and defender of Apple products among my colleagues, I concede that Apple has failed second time to deliver a great product and useful update. Website blatanlty lies about battery time and I am getting frustrated about their inability to accept their own mistake and at least appologize the way SJ did during antenna problem.

This single thread has almost 12000 posts and over a million views. Do you think that MAYBE there really is a battery problem. I tried to return it to Apple after 28 days (and swap back to an Iphone4), since it was a Verizon they would not take it back. Verizon only has a 14 day policy and wouldn't do anything. Tried the reboot and all of the other suggestions and took it to Apple store who also reset everything. Yesterday I did one download (wifi) that took 35 minutes--went from full charge to 60%. The Iphone4 was a great phone that I dearly miss. I know what the "S" stand for and it's not "successful".

Battery meters are notiriously inaccurate.  I would do the calibrate routine (run down below 20% and then reboot, and charge overnight.

Oh I definitely did that already; calibration was my first step.  Everything seems to be holding just fine.

Thanks, have tried that and at least the phone still had 90% this morning, perhaps this is all it needed?

    I will monitor over today.

That's great battery life considering you have been on the internet for sometime there. No worries with your phone...

So you really think your phone should not lose any battery in standby? The phone is constantly on in standby and the radio is contsantly listening to the cell tower for calls. 2% an hour isn't bad. At that rate you can go 50 hours but I suspect you have push turned on and location services and other services that are constantly sending and receiving data. If so then 2% isn't bad at all.

Is this good battery?  Didn't listen to music.  Used Wi-Fi.  Used FaceBook every now and again.  Switched between 3 times very frequently to check to see if I had messages on them since I was messaging people on all three.  Bluetooth off, location services are On, but I have every app switched to "Off" for Location Services.  Cellular usage enabled.  Timezone disabled.  Then I guess some other minor things turned off.

Yes that is normal. You should get about 7 hours of usage before it dies. Maybe about 6.5 at 10%. Nothing abnormal about this at all.

Not to mention that it also loses like 1% battery every 2-3 minute with most settings off just 3G on, i can see it going down while watching this thread on the phone
