Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Anyone who trolls this forum for a long period and claims they are an Ad Agency Exec probably isn't an Ad Agency Exec.

Thats funny, So if I actually get the battery usage of what Apple has posted and stated I should get, then really I was duped because of ad agencies like yours? Interesting concept.

At any rate I and others are happy with the iPhone 4s, it will run for a few days if I want it to without charge. I can and do plug it in every night just because I like it full the next day, and I can do with it everything I ever intended to when I purchased it ($149 so not that expensive for a phone of this caliber),  Make phone calls, check emails, browse internet, manage my calendar, check out a few youtube videos now and then and a host of other items. Anyway thanks for your input on this forum it was very helpful. And the whole ad agency brainwashing bit was interesting as well. BTW its ok if a company makes money on products they sell, its the American way!

Just curious, do you own a mobile phone? Did you purchase it? Did the company that made it make money off of you?

I appreciate your view, however, the "There are awesome results posted all over these pages after some of the tips were applied and certainly since iOS 5.1 was released."

Doesn't really resolve anything, you're writing in terms of someone who feels they have been beaten down, OF COURSE any little improvement, even nominally, will be considered amazing by most when they've had complete trash. It's the way the human mind works.

If I had you in a cage and I'd give you only a cup of water and a banana a day, to the point where you're beaten down mentally, then I upped it to 2 cups a day and 2 bananas, you'll think you just received a 9-course meal from me and that it was the greatest thing on the planet.

Yeah, laugh all you want at that analogy, but this is the way that the human mind works, and I, having been an ad agency exec for 3 of the top ad firms in the world and owning my own now, I KNOW this is how the human mind works, and we use it ALL THE TIME when it comes to marketing, that's how we get idiots to accept sub-standard products and HORRID service while charging them more money for them. We even get people tp ;ay MORE money for equally garbage products in their hopes of fixing the first problem.

Pride, while dangerous to people is mutually beneficial to those who make money off of people's pride, et. al.: c orporations and advertising.

Deny it all you want in order to make yourself feel better, it's OK, we, and Apple too, is making money off of you for it wwith most of the products that you buy, yes, including the iPhone - made by kids in China and you paid how much for it? Come on! Haha

    Thanks! Enjoy.

Ah yes so not 96% remaining but USED 96%. Definitely a problem. So not sure what apps you have running and set to notify but I would look there. Also maybe try the following in order. Restore from iTunes, and let it restore backup, then settings>general>reset>reset all settings, setup as new when it reboots. That will keep your apps and data but default the old settings to the new 5.1 defaults. Of course afterwards go through and set your settings as you want them manually. If that does not help. Restore from iTunes, setup as new. Do not restore your backup see how it functions as factory default device. If ok then sync with itunes to get apps back OR add back an app or two at a time until you find an offending one. If it does not improve as a default from factory iPhone, visit Apple store for a replacement.

I suspect you have corrupt settings or an offending app causing your issue.

You misunderstood my original post.  I charge it to 100%, unplug it and go to sleep.  When I get up in the morning it is all the way down to 4%, so essentially burns through the entire charge while in stand by at night.

Look for any badges on an app and see if they have something. Like I know PayPal for example will vibrate or buz whenever there is any activity. I suspect you have some app notifying you of something.

Actually, it says, "Addresses bugs affecting battery life".

Doesn't necessarily mean everything affecting the battery life on all iPhones has been fixed. There could simply be more issues they have not yet seen or figured out.

    Ok

I switched my 4S about 10 days ago after it started losing battery quickly. The replacement handset was fine till I upgraded to 5.1 Friday.

Since then it is driving me crazy. As you can see after 5 SB hours + 5 USAGE hours it is down to 20% but in fact it is ONLY 5 hours since last  full charge.

It is killing me to read the comments about turn off this r that - forgetting I paid nearly 1100 USD in Israel for this phone ! Only to turn off all the "smart" apps ?!

I live by my exchange email - can not do without PUSH - so how can I turn the push off ?!

I have a meeting tomorrow morning with the service provider's tech - will let you know what he says.

    Thanks for sharing -

    H.

I have used mine a lot on the Internet and think its pretty good for a phone that is used a lot online and everything is turned on except Bluetooth.

While you are somewhat correct in that the phone should use battery during standby, 2% is too high.  .5% is the max stated spec and is quite common for a normal operating iPhone 4s. Now with that said, if there are apps like whatsapp or messenger or facebook etc running and checking in constantly yeah 2% could very well be the norm.

So my advice, close any running apps. Turn off location/notifications services you dont need, change email to fetch/manual, and see what your standby usage is then.

Iphone that i bought yesterday with contract is losing like 2% battery life in standby per hour...think im gonna return it..

So you really think your phone should not lose any battery in standby? The phone is constantly on in standby and the radio is contsantly listening to the cell tower for calls. 2% an hour isn't bad. At that rate you can go 50 hours but I suspect you have push turned on and location services and other services that are constantly sending and receiving data. If so then 2% isn't bad at all.

I have never gotten near the .5%/hour of standby, even with airplane mode.  I think it has to do with the rather poor 3G/4G? signal level at home, and when away, the phone needs to work harder to keep cell contact, so one can't expect best standby there either.  Those who are lucky enough to see 5 bars at home, might get that, but not where I live.

Like I said before, unreasonable expectations.

Battery meters are notiriously inaccurate.  I would do the calibrate routine (run down below 20% and then reboot, and charge overnight.

Oh I definitely did that already; calibration was my first step.  Everything seems to be holding just fine.

    image (2).png

I got so involved with setting my clocks ahead before bed last night, that I forgot to plug my phone into the charger, so at the moment, I have 1 day 3 hours, and 2 hrs 10 minutes of usage, with 56% remaining.  I can't see this as a problem, even though my standby time seems to be well over the .5% level.

To me, it means I can leave the phone off the charger for about 4 days, which seems more than reasonable for a smartphone, ANY smartphone.
