Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Mr. Roy can come down....The phone is still fresh and so is the battery....Calibrate the battery a few times and it should do well. And mine lasts more than 200 hrs....So standby time in the specs is probably not an advertising statement, atleast with my phone....Everything else is just an advertising statment for sure....

May I know how did you get 8 days on standby? Was your phone in airplane mode or not?

When I turned everything off, closed all apps and only kept cell phone on (with cellular data off) then my iPhone 4S lasted on standby only about 4 and half days. I just left it on my desk and checked battery about once a day. And yes - I did fully charge and discharge the phone a couple of times before doing this test.

Anyone else on this thread who achieved 8 days standby time?

For this test, you would need an spare iPhone 4S that you have no use for. That is, for 8 days you would not touch it, it would not ring etc. Mine, with light use, at the moment is:

Standby 1 days 18 hours, Usage 2 hours and has 71% remainng battery. It has everything, including 3G, enabled. Plus a lot of apps, regular fetch mail etc. About half of that Usage is playing music. It has even an VoIP app running in background at all time. I can hardly demand more from a smartphone. I figure it could last a week!

Of course, when you start using the phone, the screen is lit, data is flowing etc, it drains the battery -- but this is expected..

After having solved my 'not so serious' battery problem, I kept the phone idle with only Diagnostics and Usage, and time zone shut off, bluetooth on, and everything else shut off abd used my 3G for two days. My 4s had lost 17 percent and had dropped to 83% battery in 48 hrs. And it was not in airplane mode....

Ok so after several more restores I still got nowhere. My phone's standby and usage times are almost identical (10 - 15 mins difference at max). Then I realized something astonishing. My phone doesn't power off! I get the spinning wheel and then the phone reboots! Also after rebooting 3G is always on even though I shut it off before trying to power off the phone everytime.

I've checked for water damge (there is none) and I'm about to restore the phone again. This leads me to one conclusion, something is keeping my phone awake so much so that it wouldn't even shut down. Any ideas/suggestions as to what could be the reason

Please keep in my mind that I don't have any downloaded apps on the phone. Only the iOS stock apps, and I'm not signed into any accounts on the phone whatsoever. Everything is also turned off (WiFi, 3G, cellular data).

Hey guys - I posted a few times last week, and finally last Friday, I decided to go to the Apple store and see what they had to say about my battery.  My phone was less than two weeks old, and the battery would not stop draining.  I was told that this wasn't normal, and even though the iPhone 4S is a pretty powerful smartphone, there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to use my phone to its full potential.

They replaced my phone, and it's been much better ever since.  My locations are on, email is to push, and I've just been using it without worrying about the battery.  I did one full cycle charge, but have not charged it through the night.

To give you an idea, I charged it before I went to bed last night, and this is what it looks like this morning. I checked facebook, twitter, instagram, and email when I woke up, and so far I'm pleased.

The people at Apple told me that it was not a battery issue, but more than likely a software issue because when they ran the diagnosis test, my phone was not responsive.  They were great, and told me that if this happens again, I can come and replace the phone again - I gotta say I appreciate their customer service.  I asked if I should turn off some of the settings to maximize the battery, and two of the guys asked me what was the point of having the iPhone then!?  I really liked hearing that!  so I lelft everything on (including icloud).  Also, I was told that the iPhone battery needs to be stimulated, and that the more it is used, the better it gets, and that turning everything off isn't necessarily the best for it.

Who knows..but I'm glad I don't have to worry about the phantom drainage anymore!

Nope.  If I could let the phone sit for 8 days without using it, I wouldn't have bought it!

Leaving things turned on that you don't need, want, or use is just plain stupid.  Anything turned on is going to use battery power, a little, for some things, a lot, for others.  Why waste it?

this is true - and I did turn off the things I don't use.  But I like notifications, I like my locations to be turned on for the weather, for foursquare check-ins, for Siri, photostream - what actually makes the iphone cool.

the point is why have this phone if I can't use it for all the fun stuff?  If I just want to talk and text, I might as well go back to a blackberry for less than $50!

My wife's iPhone 4s had the same issue with not being able to shut off. Phone would act as if a soft reboot was commanded on it own.  Apple deemed it a hardware failure after stripping it and reloading the original SW to no avail. Actually it worked for a while but the issue returned in less than 24 hrs.

Apple replaced the phone the next day under warrantee.

The apple expert stated another phone with the same issue was debugged and they found a capacitor short near the case or to the case (cant remember) which was causing the problem.

My iPhone 4 is now more than 1 year old and since the last update of iOS I've been experiencing battery drain problem. After hard reset and full-cycle battery charge everything was fine until I charged it again the other day in my car. Since then usage = standby. Apparently the source of this problem is not the hardware as my iPhone worked perfectly before the update. There must be something with software installed on it. Now I'm on 3G and closed all the apps that were running in the background. The problem is now gone (temporarily). Some apps aren't working with the iOS 5.1 correctly but I have no idea how to figure out which of them.

So 90% of iPhone (all cell phones) users are stupid?

Most people do not go in and start turning off everything they don't use (and should not have to).
    They simply use the phone.

Please do not insult others to try and get yoru point across.

Well 5.1 installed and the problem became even <worse>

Before 5.1 I was able to go to bed with still 20% left on my phone. Everything that I do not need/use is always turned off. I only use wifi at home and thats it. That was not much but hey it got me trough the day. I was hoping for the 5.1 to fix it for once and for all. Now with 5.1 I need to plug in my iphone at 19:30 after only using the phone for 2 hours and standby time of 11 hours. Nice one huh???

In the past I reset the phone and tried all the options. This time I did not since it never did anything for me except losing all my settings and folders etc.

From the first month I have this phone I had battery issues. Apple even contacted me to install a log program en retrieved the log. There are also other problems with the phone and I called Apple Netherlands and they will not help me because they say I have to go to the carrier (T-Mobile Netherlands) where I bought it (and payed real good money for it).

I did that and T-mobile wanted to replace my brandnew Iphone 4s with a second hand, refurbished model with the chance of scratches etc on the phone. I payed for a new phone so of course I refused. I tried Apple again, because by law they are responsible for delivering a working product. The lady said she could not help me, because T-Mobile was my contact in this situation since I did not buy the phone in an Apple store.

At this moment legal people are working on this towards T-Mobile (glad that I have a good legal insurrance) and I have a faulty Iphone 4s for over 4 months now. I should expect to be in this situation for a long long time.

I was an Apple addict, but I found my cure!!! My girlfriend is waiting for my problem to be solved, since she wants a new phone, but she now will go for an "in between" or just keep her 3gs for the time being.

I love the possibillities of the products, but only if it works as it should and if there is any service to be found anywhere for those products. Maybe in the US it is ok, but in the Netherlands..... sigh.
