Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

My iPhone 4 is now more than 1 year old and since the last update of iOS I've been experiencing battery drain problem. After hard reset and full-cycle battery charge everything was fine until I charged it again the other day in my car. Since then usage = standby. Apparently the source of this problem is not the hardware as my iPhone worked perfectly before the update. There must be something with software installed on it. Now I'm on 3G and closed all the apps that were running in the background. The problem is now gone (temporarily). Some apps aren't working with the iOS 5.1 correctly but I have no idea how to figure out which of them.

Get one of the system status apps that will display the CPU percent activity.  If you load an app that sends this into a 100% CPU activity, then you can assume that app isn't working correctly.  It is also possible that an app that is 'hung' will not terminate even after you click on the - in the multi-task bar.  This also will send the CPU to 100%.

So 90% of iPhone (all cell phones) users are stupid?

Most people do not go in and start turning off everything they don't use (and should not have to).
    They simply use the phone.

As the man said, stupid is as stupid does.  And wasting battery power because one is either too ignorant or too lazy to go through the settings and turn off things they won't use, qualifies.  Especially if they subsequently complain about not getting enough battery life....

Well 5.1 installed and the problem became even <worse>

Before 5.1 I was able to go to bed with still 20% left on my phone. Everything that I do not need/use is always turned off. I only use wifi at home and thats it. That was not much but hey it got me trough the day. I was hoping for the 5.1 to fix it for once and for all. Now with 5.1 I need to plug in my iphone at 19:30 after only using the phone for 2 hours and standby time of 11 hours. Nice one huh???

In the past I reset the phone and tried all the options. This time I did not since it never did anything for me except losing all my settings and folders etc.

From the first month I have this phone I had battery issues. Apple even contacted me to install a log program en retrieved the log. There are also other problems with the phone and I called Apple Netherlands and they will not help me because they say I have to go to the carrier (T-Mobile Netherlands) where I bought it (and payed real good money for it).

I did that and T-mobile wanted to replace my brandnew Iphone 4s with a second hand, refurbished model with the chance of scratches etc on the phone. I payed for a new phone so of course I refused. I tried Apple again, because by law they are responsible for delivering a working product. The lady said she could not help me, because T-Mobile was my contact in this situation since I did not buy the phone in an Apple store.

At this moment legal people are working on this towards T-Mobile (glad that I have a good legal insurrance) and I have a faulty Iphone 4s for over 4 months now. I should expect to be in this situation for a long long time.

I was an Apple addict, but I found my cure!!! My girlfriend is waiting for my problem to be solved, since she wants a new phone, but she now will go for an "in between" or just keep her 3gs for the time being.

I love the possibillities of the products, but only if it works as it should and if there is any service to be found anywhere for those products. Maybe in the US it is ok, but in the Netherlands..... sigh.

I have to ask.  When you went to bed with 20% left on the meter, WHY didn't you put it on the charger?

Sorry I should have made that clear.

I always charge over night. I don't have a choice

    I will edit my post

*Could not edit it anymore, so now everyone knows, I do charge overnight to start the day 100%.

I have a 4S.  When I had iOS5.0.0 battery life was bad, 15-20% at bedtime.  When I updated to 5.0.1 it went to great, 50% at bedtime.  On 5.1 it seems to be bad again, 15-20% at bedtime.  I've done a recalibration once since installing 5.1 and it hasn't helped.

It's not complicated...You use the phone and it takes less than half a minute to turn off unwanted options....Just like how you do with your home, dont you turn off the AC or light or is it just you, keeping shower water running even when not in use, keeping the car engine on and voila!! you can just sit and start driving the car..I bet, you dont turn off your car headlights during the day....

Unless something unexpected comes up, the next release will probably be IOS6, about June, or Sept.  I wish there was a simple solution to the battery problems of ALL users, but it appears that IOS 5.1 has cut down on the rate of messages here by about 80%, so it must have helped a lot of people.  Simple fact is, if you build 40,000,000 of ANYTHING, some of them won't work as intended, and the unfortunate buyers of those units won't be happy.  Apple has a pretty open return/exchange policy, so, for those who are close to an Apple Story, it's not too much of a hassle to get a new phone if needed.  For the others. not so good.

No it's not but people should not have to unconfigure default settings to use a product as intended.

Just like how you do with your home, dont you turn off the AC or light

When I leave but I had to turn them on in the first place. They don't default to on.

I bet, you dont turn off your car headlights during the day....

Turn them off? So yours are always on, even when car is not running? and you need to shut them off in the day? Like all the options on the iPhone?

And yes, I do (sometimes) turn them on in the day.

And many cars are now configured to always have lights on when running. Just like all the options on the iPhone.

The battery life ratings are based on default settings. They are done under controlled settings but they are not some special, super secret configuration.

and 8 hours talk time and 200 hours standby time is just that.

If you do nothing except phone calls, you can expect 8 hours use. If you do nothing except power the phone on, you can expect 200 hours standby.

It's not mixture of internet, movies, emails, web browsing, a few apps, etc..

These those have their own, separate figures.

You know, you need to take sometime to configure the phone when you activate it....So phone may have default Siri raise to speak on and bluetooth and couple other functions. You always tune an electronic device according to your needs.

And you lost me with the car there....

Apple says actual results may vary all the time....Take a look at this page once....

Understood. That page states that (most) everything is in default configuration.

So in order to get more something even close to what teh specs are, users should not have to completely turn off all unused options (my original point).

And you lost me with the car there....

You wrote, "..I bet, you dont turn off your car headlights during the day....

If you mean the lights are not supposed to be on during the day then most (all) people don't turn them off in the day as they are already off. They use them in the default configuration.

But this not really true as many vehicles are configured to have daytime running lights on.

My point....You do not use options that you dont need and you turn them off, doesnt matter whether its on or not by default....

I can see that you simply won't "get it".

    Pavan Kulkarni wrote:

Why? Apple leaves them all on.

In order to get the time that Apple states, the user should not have to turn everyrthing off to get (even close) to the times Apple states.

    This thread title needs to be changed to;

"If you are geting atrocious battery life, then we will tell you to configure the iPhone completely different than Apple does"
