Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

hey i am getting 8 hours of talk time and 30 hours of standby using all services except 3g. is it fine?

It's fine if it is fine with you.  To me, 'fine' is that it gets from 3:30AM (early riser), to 8PM (bedtime) without needing the visit the charger.  Not that an interim visit would be a major inconvenience to me, but getting through at least one full day is important to many people, who still work.  Sure, mine will last two or three days, but it is my habit to recharge each night.  And that is 'fine' by my standards.  Some seem to think anything less than meeting ALL the stats isn't fine.

Dang I am about to agree with most here. Reset,  reset again. reboot then reset then stand on one foot and restore a 4th time and the iPhone will work better. Holy Crap why cant it just friggin work like their slogan states. I mean good grief while I am fine with making a few tweaks to improve battery life its total BS to have to do all that crap every time there is an update just to make the phone work at all.

I had to restore and jump through hoops too after the 5.1 update the 2nd day and again today (just reset network settings today) and I really have not had any issues since I updated to 5.0.1.  Mine came with 5.0 and the battery didn't fair very well then  until 5.0.1 helped and all the tweaking of settings.

Point is we should be able to update let the phone reboot and it be better than before or at least at least the same. And you know what, yes with all the DA** settings at default. While I do typically have fine battery life it still is a load of crap when all of a sudden crap hits the fan for no reason requiring a reset of some form or fashion to get it back working. And yes I have a ton of stuff turned off that I dont use, like you say no point on having it on BUT it should work with it on.

And we waited for 4 months for this? How long before the next update to fix this update. <sigh>

I guess my Apple troll, lover, fanboy stripes have been stripped away now huh?

I am not sure what you are saying.  I did the 5.1 update to my phone, and my wife's phone, and will probably do it to her sister's phone in the morning, and I didn't have to change any settings, or reset, or restore anything.

What is the 'sudden crap hits the fan' thing?  Did you have a glitch?

It appears from the greatly reduced traffic here than the 5.1 update a LOT of people a LOT of good.  Didn't help me as it seems I have lost about 10 hours battery life from 5.01.  Not an issue as going from a projected 72-78 hours to 62-68 hours isn't a problem.

Next update (IOS6) will most likely be June, or Sept.

OK little update. Still should not have to babysit and pamper this device but............ What happened yesterday was I had turned on iCloud contacts to shoot a copy up to iCloud for backup. Not sure why since I use gmail and outlook and both ave my contacts.

Anyway usually I will turn on, let it upload contacts then turn it off. I forgot to turn it off yesterday. So I suspect that's what hung me up causing me to reset network settings. My usage was hung and going up with the clock matching standby. Last night when I went in to check iCloud backup I noticed contacts were still turned on!! So anyone with issues still may want to check that. If you can get by without iCloud keep it off. Seen too many responses that its causing problems. I only have find my phone turned on and now photostream since the update. All other iCloud services I usually keep off simply because I don't need it. With gmail, calendar and contacts etc are already synced. But clearly that caused my issue yesterday . Interesting after reset network settings it seemed to be ok even with contacts still on. Again too many quirky idiotic issues to manage for simple features that should just work..

I don't sync contacts with iCloud, only PhotoStream and Find My iPhone, which I find rather essential.  I don't have Outlook on my PC, so I let Gmail do the synching for contacts and calendar.

Yeah updated Wednesday, All good. Thursday evening maybe Friday morning all of a sudden battery drain like crazy. Restored Fri nite or Sat am (cant remember exactly) Drain stopped. However then I get the carrier not being displayed at the top. Verizon says "because you are on an old Alltel plan and thats the way it works, change to version plan and it will fix it"  Really?!?!?!  So Since November 3rd 2011 the fact that Verizon HAS been displayed means the phone was broken for the past 4 months and now its working as it should. Ok then. So no thanks I dont care if Verizon is at the top and if facetime dont work as long as I can keep my WAY better plan with unlimited data etc etc.

So Yesterday turned on iCloud contacts for a second to upload contacts, forgot to turn it back off. then "all of a sudden" I noticed battery drain like crazy again, stnby and usage the same ticking with the minutes on the clock. I reset network settings it stopped (again) Then late when i went to bed I looked at iCloud backup and saw that I had left on contacts. THAT was what cause the drain I am sure.

So point is iCloud is an Apple default app so you should be able to use it if you want without these issues. If I want iCloud to work with all the items it has a switch for I should be able to without starting a mad dash for the charger. And with 4 months, (longer if you count before 5.0.1), of waiting on a "fix" for the iOS5 issues it should work better is all I am saying. Should not have to restore umpteen times to make it work. So today, yeah my phone is working great! Tomorrow who knows I may have to restore again which is BS.

Clearly if I can restore and its fine then its not the device its 100% software. And I am starting to agree with others here. We should be able to have all the features its defaulted with on and at least get through a single day not just a few hours. I am totally cool with plugging in daily and really would expect to with a phone that has all these features. And sure if we turn off stuff not needed then it should do even better!

Oh and iOS6 hmm  wonder how screwed up it will be out of the gate. Maybe restore before updating, then again afterwards, then hold it upside down and restore a 3rd time and sweet it works and is really cool!  Sorry but I am really frustraited that others here and myself have to jump through hoops to make things work with this iOS. Not typical Apple from the past. I am lucky that at least after I do so my phone works great.

So loosing 10hrs with an update we waited 4 months for that was supposed to "fix" it not make it worse and you think thats ok because you dont really need those extra 10 hrs? Sorry but I am going to have to disagree with that logic.

As I said it didnt make mine worse in fact I believe its actually better than it was with 5.0.1 or 5.0 so all good there BUT having to restore and fool with it to make it work is where I have a problem. And I can assure you if I lost 10 hrs I certainly would not be OK with it.

iPhone 4S sucked. It's fast but it's always unpleasantly warm, battery literally draining in front of your eyes, the music stutters. Screen is yellow, but this is a minor issue which I wouldn't notice if not everything else.

8:52 usage is only achievable with playing music on zero volume in Airplane Mode I think.

From your picture you have data turned off so it is no wonder you have such good battery. Turn on data then see where it goes.

Either you got a bad iphone or you just haven't tried to fix the problem instead of just complaining about it. There are very few that are experiencing the problems you note.

I see, so there is no chance that I might be the one of the "very few"? And if by fixing it you mean disable location services, raise to speak and whatnot – it didn't help.

How 20% overnight can be excellent. Mine was loosing 12% overnight (in about 8 hrs), but after resetting it and disabling everything the night drain stopped. However it still drains battery when I use it, and is always warm when in use. And I mean light use, web, mail, messages etc, not Infinity Blade 2.

Very possibly you got a bad phone. Have you tried resetting network settings? That sometimes fixes a stuck network connection that may be draining the battery.

Yes, I tried everything imaginable, unfortunately I got it imported from Hong Kong and I can't simply change it. When I tried to give it back to those guys they started to wave their hands and tell me that everything is fine and I simply got to "close the background programs running, you have too many!". Guess gonna try to contact the Apple hotline.
